It is possible that my memory is borked and I am simply wrong, but is ddo the only dnd game in which the hireling does not gain xp?

Whether or not my memory fails (happens often:D), I found the hireling progression a quite involving aspect of the game. It (or them) was actually part of the game. Unlike I often feel with ddo hirelings. They just are there. Work as a paperweight or something. Then die or are dismissed.

Any1 else miss the ability to gear your companions, choose their spells, actually play them too or direct them very well? There's a plethora of threads on hireling ai, but my (gimped?) search-fu didn't find any on any progression suggestion.

What I'd like is a personal hireling, which levels up, for which you can choose some gear, several feats, spells if it can cast them, give advice on when to use those spells/skills, maybe even set a generated hate level relative to owner it aims for.

Some might think that I'm describing pets in some mmos, but I'm actually reminiscing nwn's hirelings. I want hireling plot quests too:D Can we have a hireling pass pls? (Dream on....! Maybe for u20?:))
