View Full Version : madstone boots
I got these on my cleric the other day... I really want to like them. But.... they scare the heck out of me after getting involved in a quest where I was surrounded by 8 mobs that weren't dying fast. Involuntarily triggered into madness, and it kept getting reapplied, over and over. (I'd been under the impression that you needed to activate the clicky to trigger it and then it could sustain itself if you kept busy.)
Granted, I'm durable even without active healing, between decent AC, DR, and my healing aura (or I'd have died fairly quickly) but it's a little unnerving no longer having my safety button there when I'm soloing (and if I'm grouping, you just KNOW it's going to trigger when someone is desperate for a heal and I can't provide it.)
If I knew then what I know now, I probably would have given them to someone else. I'm a safety guy and these things are dangerous!
How do other people deal with it? Just know that someone else is going to be healing you? Might try again with a really good tower shield + damage guard.
They are a melee item.
You probably made the rest of your group cry when you took them.
They only belong on a cleric if you don't cast in battle...ever.

If you need to cast spells, you don't use those boots. Although you can prevent the madstone rage by using combat expertise.

I basically don't when soloing. I buff, turn on my aura, and go. Usually that's fine. Just unnerving not being ABLE to flip a heal "just in case." Kinda goes against my mindset.

Interesting. Will Defensive fighting disable a currently active madstone rage?

Can you use your bursts while madstone?

Nope... that's the unnerving part. Can't restart the aura either, if the fight drags out. Also no wands or scrolls... potions seem to work.

Ya this is pretty much a non caster melee item. If you are going to want to cast in combat at some point, you don't wear these.

I can imagine the pretty language that occurred when you took those out of the chest! lol

To take it a step further.....the madstone rage is even more limiting then a barbs rage. Meaning it not only won't allow you to cast spells, but it won't allow you to use clickies or drink most/many pots. It really is only useful on a true melee. If you need to do any casting etc. during combat they are not for you.
...and yes you probably made all the melee's cring slightly when you looted them because anyone who knows what they do (1 clicky of madstone rage and a hidden proc effect on being hit) knows that they are dangerous on a cleric.

Madstone boots have a hidden effect called "Madstone Reaction". This is different than the "Madstone Rage" clicky that you can activate.
Madstone Reaction has a chance (15%) of being applied every time you take damage and stacks with Madstone Rage.
Note: Madstone Reaction will not apply if your DR is equal or better than what is being applied to you. i.e. If you have Stoneskin and keep getting hit for 10 points of damage will not trigger it.
Special Note: Use Arcane Rage, then Madstone Rage and run into combat for the Madstone Reaction and you will get +6 STRENGTH and +10 CONSTITUTION.

Stances (Defensive Fighting, Combat Expertise, Stalwart/Siberys Defender) will prevent successive Madstone rages, but they will not dismiss existing ones (though they will dismiss the Rage spell).

But also double your spell point cost of any spell you case while spells are active, at least for DF/CE.
These are a non-caster item. As has been said, these would have been much better being put up for roll.
Delete them, or put them in your Bank, just to prevent yourself from accidentally putting them back on.

I hear you - my clerics keep them in the bank on the offhand chance that they will go nicely with the Battlepriest PrE.
No PUGgers were harmed in the acquisition of these boots.
