FTR- I am female. But often I don't use my mic, especially in pugs. So the following behavior is not something for my benefit, apparently.
I am amazed at the number of guys who need to talk about their e-peens constantly throughout a raid. I mean, it never ends. They believe they are whacking the monsters with their "big stick" and like to tell the group how they "did that red name up his ***" and really finding any remote opportunity to mention their e-peen, the monster's e-peen, or various other body parts from that region.
These guys are usually playing dainty little female elves wearing belly-dancer outfits and constantly going on and on about how huge and scary their e-peens are. I wonder where they hide them in those outfits.
Do guys really like talking about their e-peen with other guys? I mean, are other guys impressed by the guy who's "humping on Harry, oh yeah"?
Do they think it's funny, or shocking or do they just really get their jollies talking about their imagined enormous parts to an audience of 6/12?
(Sorry if this is an inappropriate topic, I've self-edited it several times to try not crossing any boundaries but since it's so prevalent in the game and doesn't seem to be an issue there, I assume it's allowed by the TOS.)

Female gamers give me alpha male syndrome.
Please forgive me. Actually, not really.
I just get jealous, but I don't go alpha male.
Usually other people do, and be mean to me. :(
I wouldn't mind someone helping me get over this..

Guys sometimes need a place to be immature, have fun, and not have to try to impress anyone. For some, that outlet is video games, and you've come across it.
Its really no different than "girls night out" or secret silly things girls do at the heart of it.
But in the english language, one of the most blatant, utterly complete ways of saying you've totally annihilated someone, is to say you f***ed them up. So it starts from there. You're real enemy isn't guys who do this - its the english language where that visual represents the utter destruction of someone or something in the first place. :D

It's just typical group behavior of young men whose Otiluke's Freezing Spheres havn't dropped yet. They'll also tell everyone how big their polar ray is...Sorc 1 "I just did 3000 with polar ray" Sorc 2 = (Sorc 1) + 500 to 750 damage on top....
Yadda Yadda. Just very few Mature Adult Males playing video games it seems.
Adult male "human". I still shadow hump :) so my maturity is up for debate lol.

OP you bring up 2 interesting issues. One is why people swear. There are a number of interesting articles found by searching fMRI and swearing. Some studies suggest that swear words are stored differently in our brains than "regular" words and actually produce different responses when spoken and heard. This is a fairly simple study which did not involve fMRI: http://exploringthemind.com/the-mind/the-power-of-profanity
I think the other interesting thing is the current version of swearing which has shifted from the profane to the vulgar. I think you can offend your priest or your mom and IMO hardly anyone finds religious swear words to be as or more offensive than bodily function ones.
Although for maximum effect, combine the two: Odin's festering hangnail! Now take that and substitute your deity and a body part used for reproduction, and you've got a response that makes the whole raid (reportedly) pay attention, whether they want to or not, based on how swearing is processed in the brain.

Neither do I, and I still have most 1st ed books. Several illustrations in original Monster Manual were R-rated (exposed boobs), but I do not think it bears much relation to OP's complaint.

I suppose there must be more mature adults on Cannith. What OP described I had seen only a few times over year and a half of playing. And I do agree that when it comes from someone playing an elfmaid in belly-dancer outfit, it sounds absurd. You want to brag about your rod, at least have the sense to play a male barbarian.

I like to play little guys with big sticks. Mainly to make fun of them.
Part of pugging is running into the lowest common denominator of the playerbase. If that bothers you, be selective of your guild mates and play with them exclusively. It's what I would do if I didn't find such "characters" hilarious.

Welcome to the pixelated world of MMOs. Give a bunch of dudes semi-anonymity and they act like they want to act in real life but cant because theres no anonymity to hide behind.
These guys are usually playing dainty little female elves wearing belly-dancer outfits and constantly going on and on about how huge and scary their e-peens are. I wonder where they hide them in those outfits.
I like the excuses I hear for this one as well. "If I am going to be staring at a pixelated butt the entire time im playing it might as well be a supermodel-esque lady butt and not armor clad man butt."
How about watching what happens around the character, heh.
Do guys really like talking about their e-peen with other guys? I mean, are other guys impressed by the guy who's "humping on Harry, oh yeah"?

You can take a man out of highschool, but you cant take the highschool out of the man. For some of us, social games are the last bastion of being able to act like a 14 year old without having RL obligations for a few hours a day. Im not justifying this in any way shape or form, nor do I speak for everyone here, Im just saying it is what it is.

I actually did have more thing to add. We all come on to this game for one reason or not but to some its an escape from reality their family jobs and friends. they can act whatever way they want with whoever and not need to deal with the random people in real life. so when they come on to the internet boom there is a completely different person behind the computer because THEY CAN. no one is telling them this is what you do or how to do it. there are no teachers telling you hey you misspelled a word or hey work on your grammar. then once their done on the internet then they go back to their life either being the same person or just the figment of your imagination on here. whether you agree with the way people act or do things we cant control it ever. let them do what they want. just chose to run with those behaviors you do enjoy

I have to say that this is my reasoning behind (no pun intended) playing female characters. While it makes no difference to me in combat, the endless hours of running about - to the bank, vendors, one house or another - are made somewhat more bearable by having a pleasing female form upon which to gaze. This may make me appear to be some sort of lecherous old goat, but hey, I'm a guy.

No: we are not impressed and are just waiting for our chance to boast about how our e-peen is bigger then the last guy.

Interesting responses!
Just curious as it seems to happen more often when a couple of the guys know each other. Although some guys are more than happy to subject perfect strangers to their pixel fantasies about their might and size. It just seems a little... alternative life style to me. And I support that, if that makes you happy.
I'm not usually offended, but if it's really bad, I'll leave and squelch. I joined a group last week where a guy was panting into the microphone and talking about how he liked to bless chests and realized I didn't want to spend 20 minutes listening to that and left.
I realize it's a game for guys (that's the majority and that's where the money is for Turbine) and if waving your e-peen for a bunch of other guys is fun, more power to ya.

The most foul mouthed person who shocks 99% of the game populice is female!
The strongest language I think I have heard is either "We ****ed on him" (English slang) or "x got Pnwed!" or even "BOOOOM HEADSHOT!" the last two are internet memes.
Perhaps it is the mindset of the people who play on your server, for the most part khyber is full of arrogant elitist pigs who I am proud to be a member of, simply because everyone know sthey are better than the next guy so they simply just don't have to mention it.. until we need to create drama.

It all came from someone else, we all "bought" it and although "convienient" (Like "There is good food and clean water over there") it sometimes fails to describe such an esoteric concept at E-Peen Size :)

When I played single player RPG's I chose female characters because they are mostly able to be customized more and better. This is probably WAI by developers who knew their target markets. There IS a bit of a naughty thrill at customizing a female character that I'm going to play for several hours.
I really dont stare at the character's butt while playing or I would be perma-running into a wall or something. In fact, the only other time I notice the charater's physicality again is when there is another opportunity to "customise" at level ups or new armor etc.
I chose a halfling female monk as my main character because I was looking for the most "seemingly" dimunitive form to pack one heck of a wallop. And she has no butt to speak of, :p. And the argument that people would rather look at this instead of that doesn't fly, when you think about it, as, again, you would be seeing these rainman type people perma-running into walls, imo, :D.
And in an MMO, I still notice that target market is mostly males between the ages of, and if they have a handle on my psche, then they really DO deserve my $15/month.

generally when i get into groups with players that constantly talk, i tend to just tune out all the voice chat. it doesnt even have to be abrasive players or non-game related conversation. someone could start talking about the build they are going to TR into or something and my brain just files it under 'not relevant, losing interest, divert attention elsewhere'. then i just sort of go into a la-la-land of full game immersion.
sometimes this gets me into trouble as sometimes ill snap out of la-la-land only to realize that someone is yelling 'why wont the wizard give me jump, does he have audio?!?!?'. sorry, but if you blab too much about anything im going to tune you out. its nothing personal and its not even a conscious decision, its just that youre not that interesting.

Being a guy, and nearly 50 years old, and never having acted in such a manner (IRL or in an anonymous setting - i.e. game), I would have to disagree. While I can't guarantee that there haven't been any slipups in their lives, my father, 4 brothers, and 5 sons - do not generally behave in this manner, either.
I was raised to believe that certain behaviors are inappropriate; and to realize that a) there is no such thing as a secret that someone won't eventually find out and b) your audience isn't always who you think it is.

i've stopped creating new female toons and using my mic because this occurred - on TWO different servers.
course we all have different ideas about what constitutes sexual harassment, but i think a tell which consists of describing your physical anatomy and its features to me - unprompted - classifies.
it's a sad, sad world.
no complaints playing a male toon, however.

(had a 3 hour crucible run with this one guy who insisted on getting her email... good times we made him swim on hard as a pure pally)
be friend the good guys lol is probly all i can say since 80% of the internet is full of internet though guys ... i have my fair share of friends in this game already most are rather mature and have children etc i might not have that yet but i still feel that this is the best crowd to be around in a game like this where pk/pvp isnt possible (god i miss the old ultima online days)

edit:
the other guys quit the group when they realized my bro wouldt swim. sure its baddie style... but so is acting like he did and we dont mind we got other toons flagged
The worst video game trash talker I know Irl is my friend's wife. Its an ongoing thing, she buys these games and gets good at them and plays them against me and talks so much rank trash the entire time, a mile a minute, never stops. I cant even get into the highlights of the themes she covers or I'd get banned. My friend wont even play games with her. He is a drill sergeant irl.
And usually within the first twenty minutes or so I figure out how to play, and lock her right down. And I purposely dont talk any trash as I obliterate her repeatedly. Because this makes her insane.
And then the elbows start flying!
We're all monkeys slapping the dirt with varying degrees of subtlety, dont delude yourself otherwise.

I noticed this more during lower levels then at higher levels and I play in a guild of drunks.
Example Co6 run the other day on my lowbie fighter, we had a squishy rogue join who yeah may have needed some advice but the amount of ragging on then bragging from the others in the group made me shake my head. First off putting someone down isnt really going to help them want to keep playing the game. Then using the time you should be killing stuff to instead brag about your Tr's toys is just annoying and lame. Good that your proud of yourself that you did a ton of shrouds before you Tr'ed so you could have your toys early I dont need to hear for the whole damned quest about how uber amazing you are it just gets annoying. Then again lowbie pugs have gotten used to this **** now or solo to avoid it.

How so?
As someone else in thread pointed out, it's gender independent. It's all dominance games masquerading as humor ... which is fine, in and of itself. The only problem is the drag toward excess.
To assume everything is about Males asserting dominance. Thats how so.
Reminds me of this one time when I was in college and working for a retail store - I climbed up on a ladder to put away stock in the same aisle as a woman who was looking at software. As I was up there, I realized I had stuff that belonged on the opposite side of where I was at.
Being young, and at the time, too lazy to climb down the ladder, move it across the aisle, and climb back up, I simply hopped myself, the ladder, and the stock to the opposite aisle, and pulled the ladder over.
The woman walks up to my ladder and starts yelling at me, things like "what, you think you are better than me?!? You trying to demonstrate your "superiority" over me, your "dominance" over me?! Huh?!?" etc.
The minute she took a breath, I calmly said "No. I was simply trying to get from one side of the aisle to the other in the easiest manner possible."
She turned bright red, put down her software she had in her hand, promptly walked out of the store, and I never saw her again.
Oddly though, the tone of your posts very much reminds me of her.

To assume everything is about Males asserting dominance. Thats how so.
Depends on what we're talking about. And a huge chunk of "horseplay" is about bonding and dominance ... it's when it gets out of hand that it becomes a problem.
I've hazed and been hazed; a lot of it is just the price of entry into the particular clique, and it's often useful (without diving into the dynamics of groups).
Oddly though, the tone of your posts very much reminds me of her.
Time out.
I'm starting to get the impression you're making an assumption about gender ... on the internet ...

I love this topic! The topic is almost as funny as listening to PEOPLE talk about their e-peen.
I do think we ALL talk about our "e-peen" to some degree or other. The worst one I know is male, and he's a good player, but OMG he's almost not worth playing with because he never shuts up about it. I can honestly only handle 1 or 2 runs with him at a time. Then I just want to yell "Shut the *&$! UP!". I do know many female players that will measure their "prowess" quite often, but they can talk about other things as well and we just all have a good time with it. For the most part IMO most people on Sarlona don't take it seriously. I myself will whip out my Divine Punishment from time to time, but mainly just to get an idea how my character does compared with others.
On the same note, 90% of the people talking about how big and sharp their great axe is, are really only wielding a rusted dagger.(Not even a Kukri.) This makes me laugh the most, I get my little chuckle and move on, unless they keep it up. Then I feel the need to put them in their place.
OH and I love the link wars! Look at what I have! What!? My MinII is so much better than yours! Etc... LOL Everyone has 90% of this ****, who cares! You want to impress me link me something from a 4 years ago that nobody uses any more. LOL I will be impressed you manage to keep it this long. :D

I think most guys do it for #&^% & giggles. The big stick thing is hilarious really. One of the last shrouds I ran had two guys comparing their quarterstaffs (wf vs horc) and clubs asking who's was bigger. As for bragging about killing whatever red name... the first time it was me that killed a beholder, you bet I was vocal about it... or the day Auro led kill counts while vale flagging... I was in guild chat bragging like you wouldn't believe. I've never really thought how the guys act is all that bad. Then again, I was always hanging out with the guys growing up so tend not to get my delicate sensibilities offended as easy anymore ;) (not meant as an insult to anyone)
How delicate can they be, your avatar is the picture of a switch with the word "naughty" on it! :D
Do guys do this?
Maybe little dudes who can't handle the ladies.
Like this one guy I remember. I showed up at this party in my Hemi 426, yeah I got the optional 325-bhp 383 four-barrel. Anyway this guy shows up in a V6 Camaro and wants to talk %$#@. LOLOLOL! Needless to say I %$#@* his @#$ hard. Shut him up. Even his car sound system was limp %$^#ed. I said "Your system sux!" and he's all like "You dont know me or my system.....so how can you comment?...i have beaten guys with 10k-20k watts and they had 4 fubar 15's and i got em by at least 3 dbs...and im only running 3500 whole system watts....so its all in the build...dont blab about sumone you know nutin bout." and I'm all like "I DO know about your system. 4 fubar 15's? Congrats LOL. Go get metered on a TERM-LAB, mic on the dash. sealed up. THEN you can talk about your score. although im sure you wont be too proud of hitting a 145 with 4 15's in a wall. Sounds like your the one "blabbing" about something you dont know about.
If either if you were hitting 145db your ears would be bleeding, and that would be the end of that chapter. Sign language classes and lip reading instruction would be in order. People near your vehicle might also suffer hearing damage, depending on the resonance. I see people bragging like this from time to time, and I grin and nod my head knowingly, heh.
In live sound we cant be louder than 90db at 90 feet. If you do the math and account for the fletcher munson curve thats ~117db at the cones, which is the threshold of pain.

Just like in real life, some guys get all weird or stupid around women. They say and do things that will draw attention to themselves and away from others. I think that MMOs are full of guys from all walks of life. Just like there are people in real life that you don't want to hang out with, there are people like that in MMOs. Unfortunately until they open their mouths or type the words, you don't know.... But don't be too negative about it, because sometimes you meet some great people too...but yoy have to join the party to find out....

It's not an E-peen thing but more of an E-ego thing.
Facing facts, the DDO is primarily male from what I've seen but that doesn't make ego boosting activities strictly male...that's really stretching it.
It might seem like ego stroking is primarily male but thats just playing on odds really, more males means more chances at finding the random **hole who needs to tell you about his kill count.

The point is, this is the way they act when women aren't around. It's not me they are trying to impress as a girl... I don't identify myself as female, usually and I don't correct them when they address me as "dude."
I'm not curious about how men treat women in the game; I'm just puzzled as to why guys like to hear about other guys' e-peens and what they plan to do with them and how they are going to use them to pound another guy and where they are going to stick what...
I've worked in male-dominated fields for years, so I'm not naive about what guys like to talk about... this is just the first time I've come across so much guy-on-guy talk. It comes across as a lot of guys that prefer guys. And again, that's ok if that's what you like.
Definition e-peen: e-electronic, peen- short for the word it sounds like.

What is e-peen?
Yes, there are a lot of interesting characters on DDO - pun intended - but I have not yet pug'ed or otherwise grouped with another player who needed to talk about their epic protuberance - male or otherwise.
Is this isolated to specific servers or certain times of the day ?

Really? I probably run into someone talking about sticking it to someone a few times a week.
My ex-guild was absolutely full of foul mouths (I can only think of 3 people who didn't regularly discuss their body parts) and I run across them in pugs pretty often so I assumed it was fairly normal for DDO.
I have a new guild that is much more mature (and a lot more active) but there's still one or two e-peen announcers in there too. This is my first MMO so I assumed maybe MMO's in general have a higher-than-normal percentage of guys who really want to be butch girls...

ftr- I Am Female.

I bolded the important parts. In rality, it is all of the above. Tons of guys play both sexs' and mutter about the idiocy of other guys on mic or in chat bragging about their skills, lewt, or killcount.
I would say in the five years plus of playing ddo, I have seen an equal number of people for each 'camp'. It is just the mic users bragging make a bigger impact when it goes against a players personal 'grain'/playstyle/play morals.
Because of this, I tend to ignore 99.9% of the bragging and chalk it up to their likes. They like talking about it, showing off, whatever. It is part of the entertainment for them. If I don't like what I am seeing or hearing, I can ride it out with ignoring and leave afterwards. LOL

And the argument that people would rather look at this instead of that doesn't fly, when you think about it, as, again, you would be seeing these rainman type people perma-running into walls, imo, :D.
I really must take umbrage at this comment. I am neither an idiot nor a savant in my appreciation of the female form. It is a thing of beauty which can be appreciated for aesthetic aspects alone without any carnal thought whatsoever. That I choose to play female characters so that I may have something pleasing to stare at while about mundane tasks has nothing whatsoever to do with a desire to bed my fellow players regardless of character gender. Harumph, ahem, and so forth.
Apparently the OP has never listened in on a bunch of guys drinking. Its not unique to MMOs. Talking about peens asses and snatches is regular guy talk, Has been regular guy talk, and will continue to be regular guy talk until the feminists dominate the world. This behavior continues well into the "I'm old and wrinkly now, but when I was your age I banged a chick that made Angelina Jolie look like a 5 dollar pay to play girl." stage of life.
*EDIT* As for the men playing woman thing, you got 3 types of male players, Alpha, Beta, and Omega.
Alphas (top dogs) usually play unusual male toons for the simple fact that they're playing whatever they want to play for whatever reason, and still out preforming the top DPS cookie cutter. And they may even create a female character or two just to do it but hardly ever level them due to it not being appealing as they are secure in their masculinity.
Betas (almost top dogs) usually play the Oversized THF I am He-Man toons, in an attempt to make themselves feel more badass than they already do. Because they're tough but not the toughest, they want to appear to be the toughest and probably wont talk much, but when they do its laden with "im better than you" type innuendo if not flat out point blank telling someone that. They usually never play females because they're still insecure.
Omegas (Bottom rung submissives) Usually play cookie cutter fembots quoting "nice to look at" mainly because it probably is since their "working two jobs" wife isn't as beautiful as the toon and their probably not getting as much as they want. Not because they're a fairy of course, but because they're naturally submissive and don't mind being looked at that way. But they do talk up a storm revealing their insecurities.

Do you ever do anything silly just for the sake of being silly? Yes, to answer your question guys talk about their peen and e-peen together constantly, use coarse language regularly, make course jokes regularly and rarely mean any of it. It's most often intentional immaturity aimed at garnering a laugh. If it doesn't amuse you you're gonna have a long squelch list.

Takin one step deeper. Don't, whatever you do, consider that the words of the language you use to describe the thoughts in your head came from someone else and the thoughts themselves are patterns of the same language which come from someone else.
It all came from someone else, we all "bought" it and although "convienient" (Like "There is good food and clean water over there") it sometimes fails to describe such an esoteric concept at E-Peen Size :)
"Ahhh. Then you must fight da bear"
"Don't Put That Sausage In Your Mouth Mrs. Niederlander!"

As for the epeening thing, I don't do that for for same reason I don't PvP: I don't want to ruin someone else's day. I have that arrogance that comes with excellence and no need to prove anything to anyone but myself. @others
As I said, the Omega's like to speak up when their psuedo-masculinity is threatened.
@OP
I present to you the type of guys you mostly play with -------------------------------------------------->^^^^
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you prime example of a dicto simpliciter ad dictum secundum quid. Note the prominence of faulty generalization. Marvel at the sweeping oversimplification. Stare dumbstruck as it bravely attempts to reconcile its own shortcomings. I posit that no finer example can, nay, ever be seen in captivity for any price. Come one! Come all!

It has no meaning at all. It's just guys bein' stupid and talkin' just as dumb. It's a vent, it's fun, and that's it.
It's no different than my tendency towards B&B-isms, ("Hey Beavis, that kobold just kicked your ass." "Shut up, fartknocker") during a fight, or my wife telling the priest she rescued in the necropolis that ass or cash, no one gets rescued for free. Then yelling at me if I rescue them, because I just ruined her rescue sex. Or why my bio includes references to high-altitude peeing.
it's complete drivel, but it is fun. No more, no less.

Confusing arrow is confusing.
I *think* you mean me, "funny, good looking, and not afraid to try on a pair of heels", but I have this vague notion it isn't what you're going for. ;)
Lol, not you. anyone who can laugh at anything is automatically excluded from my harassment.

Why thank you, I like to keep it like that so people know when I'm shadow sniffing their rump. chalk it up to kinky self satisfaction.

Time out.
I'm starting to get the impression you're making an assumption about gender ... on the internet ...
Not at all. Just because I related a story about a girl, you thought I was assuming you were a girl - which shows your own gender bias. :D
You two do have a lot in common though
