... one person makes a comment or a suggestion something and 10 people say "STATUS QUO," "YOU'RE A NOOB," or "YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T PLAY THIS GAME," or "YOUR GUILD SUCKS," or any other type of negative response.

PS - I thought this should be posted here after I saw it on Techdirt.com (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20110608/06330714609/status-quo.shtml)

and no I'm not resizing it.

I disagree. The forum discussions are fine, have more or less always been fine, and should remain as they are.

What?

Welcome to the internet.

I invented the internet. I should be welcoming you.

I only wanted to watch live pr0n from a computer and to have a place to make overseas bets on sporting events. I never intended any of you people to be here with me.

This may help, though I've not tried it myself:

You posted some bad ideas.

We refuted them, with reasons why (well, I didn't, but others did, so there was no reason for me to post again).

And instead of responding to the posts that explained why your ideas were bad, you said something about how no one thinks outside the box, and then you posted this new thread.

I normally like your posts. I've given you plenty of pos rep over the years...

But your original idea of 100% fort on new raid bosses, and let's put some traps in the dungeon so rogues are still useful was a bad idea.

Not because we love the status quo and don't want anything to change (the vets on this board post ideas for change constantly), but because your idea was BAD.

This isn't about my posts. This is about ALL the posts that I'm reading on the forums.

No one seems to do anything but be negative or at the very least they don't do more than tell the OP or someone that made a reply that he's an idiot.

While I admit that I love trolling at times because it can really be a source of fun, it has become the normal. I'd like to see things return to a less trolling atmosphere so I can actually return to trolling instead of trying to be the voice of reason. ;)

Finally just because you and other didn't mean it was bad, it just meant it was something that is unpopular. Unpopular is far from bad. Taxes are unpopular but they aren't bad. Sometimes unpopular things need to be done but people have such a limited vocabulary now that they don't understand the difference between unpopular and bad.

Keep thinking this is personal if you but it's not. In the past week I've read more threads than I had in a long while and the negativity just ooozes off the screen.

What posts?

There are a lot of bad suggestions posted.

9 times out of 10, they're suggestions that assume that DDO should conform to 3.5 rules, or to the poster's own concepts of flavor.

I'll go clarify the post. I wasn't clear enough. My bad on that one.

Possibly. But as one of the most trollish and negative people that have ever posted on the forums, if I think it's bad then surely others have got to see it as well.

Maybe not. Maybe I'm just getting kinder and gentler in my old age. :)

Disagree. There may not be such a thing as a stupid question, but bad ideas certainly exist, and there's nothing wrong with distinguishing them from good ideas. Of course, the "goodness" of an idea is ultimately an opinion, but that doesn't mean logic and evidence can't be provided in discussing them.

Also, popularity and "goodness" of an idea are wildly different things. Who is saying otherwise?

A tax could be unpopular but good, unpopular but bad, popular but bad, or even popular but good. I'd give examples, in my opinion, of each, but that might run afoul of the "no politics" rule. But in general, I'd say a good tax is one that raises money for useful services, but doesn't inflict a degenerate effect on society. A bad tax is one that fails either of those principles.

Not me. I'm losing hair where I want it, gaining it where I don't, and practicing my "git off mah lawn!" delivery.

"Git OFF mah lawn!" ?
"GIT off MAH lawn!" ?
"Git off MAH LAWN!" ?
"Git OFF mah LAWN!" ?
"GIT OFF mah lawn!" ?
...

Obviously, I've got a lot of work to do on it. :(

To really understand the internet and it's effect on rational discourse - Google John Gabriel's Greater Internet Theory. It is indeed NSW, and that's why I can't provide the link for you here.

Recently, I found this to also be a really good summation of arguing on the internet.

You are correct that sometime people will confuse Bad and Unpopular, however sometimes the difference between bad and unpopular is just a matter of the individual's opinion.

A tax may be unpopular. A tax may be unjust. The reason for the tax may not be a good one. In my opinion that means it is possible for the tax to be bad. Of course the person's or entity that benefits from the tax may not share my opinion.

An opinion isn't wrong, it just is. Sometimes you can change someone's opinion and sometimes you will not regardless of the soundness of your information or the persuasivness of your statement.

I'm not sure I'm still on point......where is my caffine?

Your delivery is important but don't forget your props. Depending on where you are located appropriate props could be a broom, a shotgun or just wagging your finger in an appropriate way.

An opinion isn't wrong, it just is.

And this is highly debatable. Opinions don't exist outside of contexts and thus can be wrong in many ways (as they can be right in many ways, too). To me it seems that the Internet and therefore the ease of obtaining 'information' and 'facts' as well as the shallowness of most Internet discussion makes many people think that it's important to form a half-baked opinion on everything. IMO, having an opinion always includes taking responsibility for the view you advance. The value of 'an opinion' seems deflated because it's tiresome to distinguish all the crude trollfarts from well matured thoughts.

Here, I've had some practice at this.

Try it this way:

"Git The F off Mah F'n Lahwn!!" (Waving region-appropriate prop, as detailed elsewhere.)

Always clears the lawn. Plus bonus, sometimes garners a visit from a parent who can be likewise told just how to step off if they step onto the precious greenery. ;)

Ummm. What were we talkin about again? :o

+1 for using "trollfarts."

And Talon, I think that I've successfully proven over the years that CON is definitely a dump stat. :)

I would estimate closer to 6 out of 10 times.

The rest are changes to try and make DDO work just like any of 6 dozen other MMOs, and those differences are why most of us are here, some for nearly 6 years :D
