I actually thought true neutral would be a bad choice because the monsters are all generaly chaotic or evil and there are weapons which do specific chaotic/evil damage?

what are someconsiderations on choice of alignment and what are the advantages of true neutral alignment...?
(this thread says it is good for Wiz/Rogue

Most monsters are evil, but not necessarily chaotic.

Abilities that do Evil or Chaotic damage will either do the same to Neutral as Good/Lawful or less. Consider it the other way: we have Pure Good weapons (do the same to Neutral and Evil), and we have Holy weapons (do nothing to Neutral and something to Evil), but we have no Good-type weapon enhancement that does more to Neutral than to Evil.

As such, being True Neutral decreases the damage your character will take from certain abilities. These abilities are fairly uncommon, depending on which content you're running.

.

The other system alignment factors into is item use. Certain items cause a negative level if a character of the opposing alignment wields them - neutral opposes nothing, so they never have this problem. Certain items require a UMD check to use if not of the proper alignment - such as Pure Good. Certain item enhancements only work for the proper alignment - such as Stability.

For anyone that can get a 20 UMD (without boosts/equipment/rediculous number of buffs) true neutral is a great alignment to have. True Law/True Chaos/Pure Good only have a 20 UMD to use. A True Neutral character never suffers negative levels from Axiomatic/Anarchic/Holy weapons (Which have no UMD check BTW.) and Taint of Evil items. They also never take extra damage from Anarchic/Axiomatic/Holy/Unholy weapons. (Queen Lailat, for example, uses Anarchic/Unholy Weapons.) They also tend to avoid the truly nasty parts of Unholy Blight. (Which mobs cast at players)

If I am building a UMD character it will be True Neutral.

Have lots of build points(meaning INTelligence), and put some points into Charisma.

What would be an easy character for that? A Drow Bard/Rogue.

If I am not building a UMD character, then I go Lawful Good just because.

UMD allows you to really create a character that is a bit different. I played with a barbarian that had high UMD and he could use raise dead scrolls. Maybe all barbarians do this as that is one of the character types that I don't play with and I am not familiar with their capabilities other than high HP and high DPS.

Chaotic Neutral for my Halfling Rogue
Lawful Good for my Paladin.
True Neutral for my Arcane Caster
Neutral Good for my Divine Caster.

As DDO matures the advantages of being good have moved over to neutral.

It use to be that you wanted to be good in order to use pure good weapons. With the abundance of holy weapons there is no longer such a demand.

Some players advocate neutral to mitigate monster damage but this is not nearly common enough to justify being neutral for that reason alone.

Good is more convenient because you can use weapons "of Pure Good".

Neutral is more sturdy because there are a fair number of effects that do damage to Good characters that don't end up doing damage to Neutral characters - just like how Holy does 2d6 damage to Evil enemies, but not to Neutral ones.

There are also effects that damage both Lawful and Chaotic characters that will have less of an effect (or no effect at all) on Neutral characters.

I would suggest going Neutral Good on any charcter that will have no Use Magic Device skill and true Neutral on any character that will have Use Magic Device built up.

Pure Good is a relatively recent thing. Neutral has ALWAYS been the best alignment, because from day 1 there have been Stability items that only benefit neutrals.

As more time goes by, being neutral just becomes a better and better decision (Superior Stability, monsters using Anarchic/Unholy weapons, touch of evil items...).
