View Full Version : Don't forget the Prayer

I think many people have forgotten the power of Prayer. Sure, it is a nice little buff. Cast at the beginning of a quest or raid, it provides everyone a handy bonus to attacks, damage, saves, and skills. But how often do people remember about the other side of Prayer, the darker side? For those who have forgotten, or do not know, Prayer also gives the enemy a penalty to attacks, damage, saves, and skills, and there is no saving throw against this effect.
That's right, for the low cost of a Prayer spell, you can kill 5% more creatures in the Vale with a Wail of the Banshee. For just 20 SP, Mass Hold will land 5% more often, and last 5% longer. 5% more creatures will succumb to the soothing power of the disco ball. And this will work anywhere in the game. It works in the Vale. It works in Amrath. It works in normal quests, and it works in elite quests. It even works in epics and raids!
When was the last time you saw a cleric cast Prayer in the thick of battle? If you can't remember, maybe it's time to start spreading the word. Who knows, maybe you'll earn some converts.

While it has a save, I feel the same way about Crushing Despair. I don't see nearly enough Bards/Wizards tossing this tasty nugget out.

Or be a Favored Soul and have the Aura of Menace lowering all nearby enemies' saves, attack, AC, and SR by 2.

be a Favored Soul

As to the OP: I think the problem with casting prayer in the thick of battle is that trash doesn't matter, and anything that saves against the DC based spell that has just been thrown out will be mowed down anyway. I suppose it is something to think about if it works on bosses though. With sorcerer DPS being save based, it might be nice to use if you have a Sorc in the party.

My experiences are different than yours, as I have seen people wipe or nearly wipe due to trash in many places:
VoD
ToD orthons
Shroud part 2
Epics
Elite Amrath quests
Anything that helps in in those tough situations is, well, helpful.

Are you sure about that? The DDO wiki doesn't mention one, it specifically it does not have a save in 3rd edition rules, and I don't remember seeing a save on the tooltip.
Edit: Oh, yes, I definitely agree on Crushing Despair :)

I use it about a bajillion times a day. It has a save.
Also, if you look at the U9 release notes, it has a portion where it mentions on a failed save, Crushing Despair *still* debuffs their Will Save by 5 for... 15 seconds I believe? Regardless, hard to have such a condition without a save. :)
Edit : To be clear, I'm talking about Crushing Despair having a save, not Prayer.

Sorry, reading comprehension fail on my part.

No need to tell this sorc about the new crushing despair. Since U9 its been what I replaced firewall with.
