View Full Version : Auction House vs Why don't they open a separate server for your own shop/mktplace?

Just something comes to mind. Probably a silly idea. But here goes
1) Do you guys prefer an Auction House or a system where you open your own online shop and leave it logged in?
I think an AH Is way more efficient (pioneered by WoW?) and it does have some atmosphere.
But I actually prefer SilkRoad Online's (SROs) system where everyone just opens their own shop and leaves it logged in overnight. Then prospective buyers have to walk around looking for goods they want. Sellers can shout their wares if they are present and as you walk around, you hear different shouts. Regular sellers tend to park themselves in the same spot. Way less efficient but I found it way more fun?
2) I think SRO's system made heaps of lag. Why don't they park the ability to open your online shop on a separate server where there is an open mktplace for people to stand around in? Then you can only trade there. Makes swapping stuff harder in quest though hmm... anyway just wonderin'....

Please no. Every game I've played that has a system that benefits me by leaving my computer on all night with me AFK is a game I have quit.
Not only would it increase server load, its an absurd and disgusting waste of electricity.

I like shop systems, but for DDO I think the AH is the way to go.
I loved the way vending worked in SWG where you could both have a shop or post things on a global auction house. Global was more for small adventuring items and shops were for bulk items or very expensive crafted items. I loved crafting and selling in SWG far more than the combat which was bleh!
DDO is really a combat game though and I don't think it lends itself to shops at all.

The problem with that is its still like the AH, except you need to run around all over the place to find stuff over 1 central location and yes needing to leave your computer on all the time just for the game. In another turbine game, Asherons Call, you had to check 100+ vendor bots to find stuff and everyone had a different price system of course for an items value, over just going to an AH and searching. I know what I prefer.

I never played SWG but I thought that Dark Age of Camelot handled this issue very well.
Individual players could purchase their own houses, install a Porch on the house and purchase an NPC "merchant" that would act as the salesman for whatever items you place in his inventory with a price (you could also put stuff on him with no price for extra storage). At first, an NPC at the entrance to every housing zone was where you searched for items you might want to buy and then you had to travel to the particular player house in order to actually buy it. Later on, Mythic reworked it so that you could purchase the item directly from the entrance NPC, paying a premium for the convenience.
Of course, Turbine would have to roll out player housing for DDO first....but they also do Lord of the Rings Online and it has player housing so we know there is a way, provided they have the will.

Ultima Online's was the best to me. Set your house up as your shop, or rent a vendor in someone else's house in a high traffic area. Although, the more I think about it, the more it sucked. You would, literally, have to sort through bags and bags of vendor inventory.
I like DDO's auction house, particularly now that it has a search function. It's much less time consuming, which allows for less downtime between quests.

You're joking, right?
Online auction houses predate BLIZZARD AS A COMPANY.

wow pioneered nothing.
They just took the most liked bits from every other game that came before it.

nothing more to say, except that doing this took all flavor out of the game.

Whenever I've played in games that have had player shops, I've always tired of having to go from shop to shop to see the same things at the same prices, or maybe not, way too much work.
The only way I could see it work is if it were tied to a central marketplace or...auction house.
Now if everyone could purchase and setup their own market and have it advertised as part of a central "clearing" or "auction" house.....we'd have the same thing we have now, except the items would also mention whose "house" they were in and some personal information about that shop. I've seen this done in some games and it works fine, but it is in fact not much different at all from the Auction House.
Off Topic Aside:
As to WOW, very very little on the internet is new. In fact, very very little in computing is new, in fact very very little in society and culture is new, in fact very very little in the universe is new - its all just recombinations of the same ingredients in sometimes new but often patterned repetitive trends. While the beauty and diversity of recombination should be cherished and rewarded, we tend to pick our royalty and worship them over all. Go figure.

I do miss the Bazaar from EQ, but I'm not sure that it'd be the best use of Turbine's developers' time.
Sometimes I miss EVE's market, though. Having sell orders but not buy orders is vexatious and market-distorting.

EVE's market is...fantastically awesome, I must say.
Also their character storage capacity. 100,000,000,000 items? No problem. Beats the hell out of DDO's limit of about 130 per character.
And /No to having an EQ style bazaar. I don't want to have to leave my computer running all the time.

AoC has by far the best trade system IMO, it's similiar to an 'auction house' but they removed the annoying 'auction' part. So basicly there is only a buyout price.

It does sound like it would add flavor, but I'd get tired of the extra work fast.
However, if the pawn brokers or auctioneers occasionally called random samplings of their wares as you walked by, that would be cool and add atmosphere without making shopping for gear any harder.
And as long as we are on the topic, extending the auction house to MyDDO would be cool too. Though worker productivity might decline when this feature was unleashed, er, introduced ;-) (PS - I have the day off today, really!)

So basically just like the AH, just worse with more busywork?
