I am an altoholic noob. As a result, my highest level character is a 10th level cleric (almost 11th!). Last night I decided to solo the Church and the Cult. Now, I am a dedicated forum reader so I have read things about this quest. However, the dungeon itself is called the Temple of Vol or something like that ... so I never really thought about being in the Church and the Cult quest. Plus, I had been drinking a little.
So things started off fine. I was moving through the quest beating down undead and mephits. Running through traps with no problems. Then I get to the final boss. Before I open the door, I realize that this is going to be the final battle. So I rush in and hit him with a divine punishment and then run out of the room. My plan was to hit him with another divine punishment. He closes fast before I can cast it again. So I take out my trusty holy great axe and begin pounding on him. The divine punishment is reducing his health and at this point I did not realize my axe was useless.
Then he summons the wolves. All of my attention is focused on defeating the wolves. They knock me down from time to time but thanks to radiant servant, I can keep myself alive and I defeat the wolves. Now, back to the main bad dude who I still think is a cleric. I rush him again and swing away with my axe. The divine punishment had hurt him. It is then that I notice that although I keep landing blows, they are not reducing his health.
I then look at the bad guy again ... funny looking haircut, familiar looking robes ... he is a vampire! No problem, I have a +3 silver great sword for just such an enemy. Unfortunately, it is sitting in my bank. I will have to finish him off with spells.
It is then I notice that my spells are all gray ... I have no more spell points (except the few from echos of power). Fortunately, I had the mnemonic trinket and was able to get a burst of spell points. I was able to hit him with another divine punishment and a couple of nimbus of lights and ... victory was mine!
The lesson in all of this:
1. If you are going to solo ... be prepared. Do not leave the silver weapon in the bank.
2. Drinking dulls the senses. I probably would have remembered the vampire if I had laid off the rum.
Hopefully ... this post will be instructive to someone! Happy hunting adventurers!
