View Full Version : Question about melee damage "issues"...

Recently my 10th level cleric (Radiant Servant build) was in a party doing the Church and the Cult (elite) and it was going quite well. Good communication, good support, etc…

We get to the end room and I use a Brilliancy III potion to enhance my Searing Light spells. The party engages the vampire and I see that my Searing Light spells are hitting for between 112 and 120 purple damage. I think I’m doing great with that amount of damage (it was other suggestions on this board that got me to use the potions and the Searing Light spells against a vampire, and it works great!)

Anyway, the vampire kills five of the party (including me) and we head back to the shrine by the entrance to resurrect. I mention that I was doing up to 120 damage with each Searing Light spell (thinking I was doing quite well by hitting the vampire with a spell to which he is particularly vulnerable) and the other 10th level cleric in the group laughs and says that he was hitting the vampire with about 260 points per hit with his sword.

I never got the chance to ask him what his weapon was, but I was left with the impression that I am missing something. Before the vampire fight I armed my cleric with a +2 metalline dwarven axe of maiming, which was the only thing I had with which to harm a vampire in melee. Needless to say, it does not cause damage even remotely close to 260 per hit. I also have a 9/1/1 ranger/fighter/rogue and he does not do 260 points of damage per hit on his best day. I don’t know if he’s ever broken 120.

What am I missing? Should I be spending more in the auction house, looking for weapons? If so, what should I be looking for? Should I be crafting weapons? I haven’t even started on crafting yet, although I am lugging around a pile of essences. And I have bought my weapons at the Auction house, but I don't seem to be earning plats as fast as other players - my 11th level ranger has about 75,000 platinum, and he is the richest of my three characters.

Any help would be appreciate!

Are you sure he was talking about damage per hit rather than DPS=damage per second? Even capped barbarians buffed and twinked to the gills can't reach 260 damage per hit on non-crittable target,

I said "I was doing up to 120 damage with each Searing Light", and he laughed and said, "Well, I was doing about 260 with each hit of my sword."

I assumed he meant each hit, not DPS. Can I take it from your response that my 120 points of damage with each spell was not totally feeble? lol... My cleric was feeling a bit unsure of himself...

Someone is a big liar, and it's not you...

I would say "ss or it didn't happen" because that's obvious bull honky.

A cleric at level 10 with a sword will not have great DPS fighting a vampire (TRs or Uber-Geared may prove that wrong...). They would have better DPS casting spells than melee in most undead circumstances. Perhaps at level 11 if they had some greensteel they might be able to pop some good numbers up over that critters head, but I would say that this particular cleric was most certainly lying.

You 120s aren't uberleet, but they are respectable for sure. Were those regular shots or were they critical hits for 120? If it was criticals, then you're not dishing out much DPS...

At 10th level Radiant Servant, do you have Empower and Maximize? If so, and they weren't active, I might have suggested you have at least one (maximize) active. Also, your Radiant Burst should do some pretty stellar damage to a vamp, and also takes Maximize for free so no SP costs and you get to heal your party as well.

Overall, cleric was lying and your Searing Light is respectable. However, I would like to point out that your group had 2 clerics and yet you still all (but one) died...so...Perhaps DPS shouldn't be the issue at hand?

next time you do that quest, or face any type of undead, use your rad servant bursts, you will out dps pretty much anyone just from that.

What am I missing? To reiterate what others have said, that cleric was 100% lying. Not only was he or she not doing 260 damage per average hit, he or she was not doing 260 damage per second - period, end of story.

Just a note: don't forget divine punishment, the damage output is really great against such bosses (and can finish them even after you're dead ;)).
