View Full Version : Best solo class? Monk?

Thanks for all the help, folks.

My son has a lot more playtime than me, and he loves the game. He wants a second character he can play solo.

What is a highly survivable solo build? Monk with fairly even attributes but low int and cha?

He probably won't be grouping much at all. He loves his pure fighter (Horc 20str 12 dex 16 con) but has discovered he can't survive much without my heals.

thx for ideas.

he could use hirelings for heals

but yes a monk can solo quite a bit

I would argue strongly for the WF FVS. even with out a lot of gear they will own most content.

as a point of reference my FVS with nothing other than con op for raid gear can easily solo elite amrath.

the build below can be adapted to solo/newbie play. just dont expect to tank alot in 12 man raids :)

hope this helps

WF wiz or sorc.

i have a healing amp pally that is more or less unkillable when soloing, especially when using a cleric hireling. it does take a bit to get started until you get yourself geared and get enough APs to boost your healing amp. the dps wont be top notch though.

A post I made a while back but I'm sure it still applies today:

Monks are good for soloing...

*dungeon gets scaled down for solo party member*

Oh ****, I can't get any ki! *gulp csw pot*
Dagnabit quit dying on me and let me beat some yellow bar out of you! *gulp csw pot*
*** this quest on normal is harder than the last quest I soloed on elite!?!?!

If he doesn't want to use hirelings and wants to be a melee then monk is probably the way to go. I prefer dex/wis for the AC which is awesome for soloing normal content.

If he wants to play a caster or FvS there are lots of builds along those lines that are very soloable as well...especially WF casters.

That post doesn't seem valid for light monks anyway. I have solo'd up to level 14 quests with my level 13 monk and only occasionally drink CSW pots. You just have to build for soloing. If you go all out for DPS you will take a lot of damage in return.

Ack, forgot to mention - he doesn't like casters.
Any links to a monk build that includes skills/feats etc for all levels would be great.

Thanks

He could try a Half Orc Warchanter/other Bard PrE. Pretty decent Melee and has a nice spell selection from both arcane and divine, as well as bard songs. Paladin Hunter of the Dead is pretty solo capable too.

My guild needed a healer for raids. I also wanted to be able to solo level the character. I ended up picking a WF FVS melee/heal focus. I am able to solo quests at any level up through level 18. Not every quest at every level, but I always have something to run that I can complete. I'm not the worst player, but also definitely not the best. My gear is at best fair.

Toon is capped and has become my defacto main. He can solo when I can't group, and everybody always wants a healer when I need to PUG.

I solo'd my level... 16 (if I remember right) wis/dex based halfling light monk most of the way. Granted it was before Shintao was released (or "improved" to be the least bit viable), but I seriously doubt that would make that big of a difference.

Unless your damage is completely gimped (str of 6 or 8?), you should be killing enemies faster than you can reliably gain ki on normal with the dungeon scaling.

With a few exceptions, soloing on hard/elite is generally easier for a monk...

Ah wait did they ever nix the Grazing Hits system? I remember getting poked to death by masses of 1's and 2's back when dungeon scaling was first implemented...

Anyways, doesn't really matter. Mobs die quick soloing on normal. Mobs that die quick may mean less damage, but it also means less ki, and less ki means less... monk.

I like paladins, since they get divine grace which nets a +X modifier to your saves depending on your cha. Also interestingly, I met a newbie paladin, who thought charisma was only for LoH, and that wis, int, dex was more important oO? IMO Paladins are decent soloers too.

Halfling AC light monk with FULL dragonmarks = doable solo build Here's one build (may not be 100% optimal)

Notes:
-Low str is lame.. But get a tome for str.
-This is a 28 pt build. For 32 pt put extra points into CON or WIS (hp or AC respectively)
-Skill points are pretty open. I thought the stealth MAY help solo. But, you could put points into whatev (on top of concentration, balance, and jump of course). You COULD even do UMD and you may get high enuf to use cure wands with the right items/gear.

Other "not casters" are the hybrid bluebar melees prolly in order of self-heal ability:

Bard (spells + umd heal scrolls/wands)
Pally (LOH, Spells, Wands, and POSSIBLY umd heal scrolls with right build)
Ranger (wands/spells)

Human or Helf for healing amp would be a good idea OR an AC fighter halfling with dragonmarks could work.

Yes, it's a 32 point build and no the +2 tomes aren't necessary, just fun. But you will need at least a +2 int tome for Combat Expertise at lvl 20. Or just pick something else. :D

Granted, he's only level 6 right now. But he's able to solo any quest at level and even some at level on hard and elite. Yes there's a level of wizard in there, but it's not for casting (even though there are a few lvl 1 spells that will allow you to go without clickies: Exp retreat, detect secret doors, etc). It's for the maximize and empower feats for his dragonmarks. Of which (at lvl 20) he'd get 9 Cure Light Wounds, 7 Cure Serious Wounds and 6 Heals.

Total Self-Healing Potential
9 Cure Light for ((d6+2)+5) * 2.5 Max/Emp * 1.5 Devotion * 1.2 Monk Recovery * 1.1*1.2*1.3 uber equipment = 81 each; total 729
7 Cure Serious for (3(d6+2)+15) * 2.5 * 1.5 * 1.2 * 1.1*1.2*1.3 = 243 each; total 1701
6 Heal for 150 * 1.5 * 1.2 * 1.1*1.2*1.3 = 463 each; total 2780

Grand total: 5,210 HP per rest :) This is kind of a lie, though, as 463 point Heals will generally blow the top off your HP bar. Nice problem to have.

The point is, you get a huge boat load of healing for free. That doesn't even begin to tap into the Light path strikes and the monks Wholeness of Body for healing as well.

I'd like to say this is my idea, but it isn't. The original post is here: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=260560&highlight=monk+fighter+wizard. It's called Helli the Hellacious Hammerin' Halflin' or "Quad H" -- for short. It's a great build by Thanimal. I believe I've made a few adjustments to his build, but the end result is the same.

Super fun to play, super easy. So far I've got mine to level 6 and I'm just using gear I find.

I'd say

WF rogue2/wizard 18 - go evocation for pewpew fun times while levelling.

WF pure lord of blades favoured soul

half elf pure monk with cleric dilantette

I've tried all the above (helf monk only 15th atm, others capped) and theyre all fun to play & extremely survivable solo or in groups.
