Before you turn off general, trade, advice chats? I seem to be a slow learner... And yet another wonderful Gen Chat harbor incident.
Ok, so I'll take responsibility for the following story... I engaged the person in chat.... I should have simply ignored the person.
But the other day, while working on a new Cleric, I, as usual, am soloing harbor quests... No point in grouping for these, so I usually leave Gen Chat on, so I can have some other entertainment while playing (slaughtering countless kobolds indiscriminately...).
When someone Starts linking into Gen Chat, in the Harbor, Every piece of their Epic Gear... One at a time, over 25 sec or so.... About 12 items. Ok, so they were Epics from almost Every pack with Epic items... An impressive assortment, but after the 10 or 12th item, it was obnoxious. I know it is obnoxious, because, even when I do something like that it's obnoxious and I know it is, but sometimes you want to share... But To do it in the Harbor? really? why?
So after the last line of:
Epic X
Epic X
Epic X
Epic X
Epic X
Epic X
I write in Epic Who gives a hoot?
To which I get a response of " Well what are you wearing?"
Again, you are comparing your Epic gear to a Lvl 4 Cleric? Really, you really need to prove your superiority to a Lvl 4!? Ok so I link my +4 mithral FP, +1 True law mace of PG, and a few other lvl 4 twink gearage.
A ensuing conversation was held where this person tried to tear me down, but I basically just laughed and have to wonder how desperate for attention this person was.
Thankfully an Epic Von6 started to form, so I logged out mid conversation, but I'm sure the other person felt like they won....
Can anyone tell me if they can think of a reason other than to show off to lowbies why someone would link every piece of gear into Gen Chat and not into Party Chat or tells, in the harbor?
And how many times do I need to be bitten like this before I learn to just shut it off?

Next time link your Kortho's gear, and extol how it is far more awesome then his epic gear as you can kill a mob -at level- with one hit, then ask if he do the same?

Why shut it off?
The guy linked his stuff so he can feel better than others as a DDO player.
By linking his stuff he also made everyone around him feel better about themselves as a person because they aren't that much of an insecure blowhard.
Win-win. Everyone feels better about themselves.

Not everybody knows that you can switch to party chat with /p; couple that with the fact that linking puts the items in general chat and you may have the answer. Or maybe someone asked him for it using the general chat.
Of course the more probable answer is "He wanted to show off".

or tell him that the colour of his epic armour doesnt match your eyes so you'd never wear it, then see if he tries to chat you up instead ;)

If he really was linking all his epic stuff into general chat just to show off his virtual items then that would be very sad indeed.
However it could simply be that he forgot or miss typed the /p while he was on the general tab and was then too stubborn to admit to his error when you sent hom a tell.
Once in a while i have made that basic error myself when trying to link items to the party resulting in the link showing in general chat by mistake. 12 epic link failures may be pushing this idea a little too far but i guess he could have multi linked all his stuff in 1 chat without the /p.
Its a funny story either way.

Perhaps the fact that after cdemeritt called him out, the other person then got into a silly pitch fight of gear comparisons against low level gear. Kinda suggests to me that actually he was no clue player who has piked his way to Epic content and then wanted to express how big his epeen really was... more experienced players may still forget to put the /p in the link but normally wouldn't even bother to engage in such pathetic general chat wars, especially when they see that other player and their gear is of lowbie level ... would we? :D

I shoved advice to another tab (so if I'm brave I can venture in), and have them all turn off in a quest. If I'm in a party, it just clogs up the screen.

I'm sorry, I don't see the bite mark. Unless linking his gear was disrupting another exchange going on, I just don't see the major offense here. My highest character is level 13 still, so I've never even seen epic gear, I can assure you I would have found it quite interesting indeed. I imagine there would be a number of people in the harbor, who like me, have never seen epic gear and been interested in it as well.
Was he showing off? I wasn't there, but I imagine he probably was. I'm not a show off, I wouldn't link my gear in general chat without provocation, but I also don't see the harm. I've seen people link stuff from +1 daggers to wooden shields in trade, some people link a dozen or so of such items at once. It scrolls off the top and it's gone, nothing to worry about.
Personally, I find it far too quiet most of the time. So much so that I feel like I'm playing a single player game with oddly named NPCs at times. I think people need to chill about general chat channels a bit, they are overly policed and it's not like it's 911. Spammers and jerks can be annoying when they interrupt legitimate conversations, but here conversation is so tightly restricted by people jumping down each other's throats that there aren't any conversations even going on for the spammers and jerks to disrupt.

This really did make me lol. +1 rep to you.
Not everybody knows that you can switch to party chat with /p.
If someone gets to level 20 and spends enough time grinding out all the epic gear he linked and does not know about /p then that person fails at life.

Same here.
Just yesterday I swapped a large devil scale for 2 funks, 5 pebbles and some other GS-base crafting mats.
That one trade (done in Marketplace on a recent TR) meant I was able to immediately craft a new GS item for an alt, all the way to T3 without needing to grind out the Vale quests a dozen times.

You should have offered to buy them:
Show-off: Epic Sword of the Shadows
You: Awesome! I'll give you a 1000 pp for that!
Show-off: Epic Bloodstone
you: That too!
you: you should be doing this in the trade channel
Show-off: They are bound to character
Show-off: *frustration starts to mount*

I usually have the party tab selected..with guild chat inside of it...
I think maybe once every 3 months I look in on general chat just to see the weirdness.
Each tab allows you to specify what incoming text appears in the chat tab...viewing general seems a waste of time.
When I hit general I type in a few times that they should go to the forums or ddowiki for better answers and to understand the game.
as to 'epic' dude, sounds like he is bored and figured his epeen would get bigger by doing it...you made him feel special. A troll is a troll man, ignore them.

Sometimes the desire for a person to whip out their e-peen and see if it is bigger than somebody elses e-peen is a unresistable urge.

maybe we'll see lvl20's running about with their korthos starter rags on and an epic SoS in their pocket waiting to flash it at an unsuspecting by stander? :)
