View Full Version : What class for Khopesh Human?

So after playing this game for a while as a cleric, and after seeing the awesomeness of dual weilders I decided to start one.
So, can you suggest a class and possibly a good 32pt build for my second character, a Khopesh Weilding Human? I can use any tomes. And I can provide cash and gear for leveling.
Only 3 requirements: Human, Pure and Weilding Khopeshes
Human because I can relate to them
Pure because my main is a mutliclass and I wish he wasn't
Khopeshes because they're just that awesome
I like to solo with a hireling cleric, but I also want to be useful in parties. Also could be nice If I could open the doors I always skipped on my main. And Im concerned that picking something that can't heal itself or provide defensive buffs will be a lot harder than my cleric. And what Barbarians or Fighters can do? Are they like highest DPS of all dual weilders? Can they off-tank? Is it true than Rangers can open all normal locks and heal themselves?
So should I start a rogue, ranger, paladin, fighter or barbarian?
Thanks in advance.

Even controlling for equipment, highest DPS depends on target.
No one can open locks with the Open Locks skill without taking at least one level of rogue. Anybody with UMD can use a Knock wand/scroll, but they lose their effectiveness pretty quickly.
I recommend you go for a Paladin:
Str: 15
Dex: 15
Con: 14
Int: 8
Wis: 8
Cha: 16
+2 tomes in Dex and Cha are most important to qualify for I/G TWF and Divine Might, respectively, but feel free to throw them in on Str, Con, and Wis.
Feats: TWF, ITWF, GTWF, Toughness, Exotic: Khopesh, Power Attack, IC: Slash. This leaves you with one, which you could probably use on Extend but it's not as important as these other ones. Human is really nice for Paladin
Enhancements: DM III, Knight of the Chalice III and all its prerequisites, Divine Sacrifice. I think Improved Recovery and pumping up your Lay on Hands will be especially valuable for you as a cleric player.
You will be very good at DPS against evil outsiders. You will be good enough DPS against everything else. You will be able to solo with a cleric hireling very easily.
Fighters and barbarians have a ton of hp and highest "all purpose" DPS. Combined with human healing amplification it makes them excellent main tanks. In epics they bring Stunning Blow and highest to-hit to the table.
Rogues have BEST situational DPS (read: sneak attack). Evasion and exceptional skill set compensate for the lack of hp.
Paladins have best DPS against evil outsiders, decent selfheal, outstanding saves and great healing amplification. Dirt cheap boss beaters are also worth mentioning.

Okay so you've convinced me to not take the ranger class :P
That paladin build looks really tempting, especially if I plan to buy the +2 supreme tome. But I have the cleric already and it does feel a little same.
I would rater go for the rogue for a completely different playstyle, but I'm concerned about the squishiness and inability to solo.

It's a shame you don't want to multiclass. There are several good Warchanter Bard builds out there that have very good dps, but they require a 4-6 level splash. I've also heard of a really nice 20 Spellsinger TWF with Epic Dynastic Falcatas.
They're not the highest DPS class out there, but they hold their own, have heals and buffs, maybe some CC and everyone loves having a Bard in the party.

No thanks, I tried a bard, and they are hard and guitars is just not my thing.

i'm not sure what's happened with your main, but don't judge multi-classing too quickly. They are very easy to mess up, but if done correctly they can add lots to your toon. You have to have some rogue in you to do locks and traps plus they come with the great feat evasion if you take two levels of them. If you want to go barbarian and use khopeshes then you really should multi-class as well.
Based on what you've said, a 18 paladin/ 2 rogue should do most of what you want, but you could be stretching your self quite thin. Builds that aim to do everything usually end up doing nothing particularly well, especially without the right gear.
I'd recommend focussing one thing in particular and perhaps leaving more advanced builds until you have more experience of the game.
If you want high dps then go pure fighter or some variation of 18 barb/ 2 fighter; if you want decent dps but better survivability then go paladin and if you want the highest potential, but situational dps, and abilities like open locks and disable traps then go rogue. Although rogues can have the highest dps is wont really feel like you do until later on and even then it depends on getting sneak attacks.

Ideal solo type toon with your requirements would be a monster build type 12 fighter for kensai II 6 ranger for tempest I and 2 rog for evasion and traps. Ranger also allows for rams might and wand healing. This is still a very good DPS build.

My vote would be Rogue personally, fits in well with it. Posting my own build below, though its a TR, can work it down to fit a 32 point build fairly easily. Took a bit longer to get it up than I meant, I apparently deleted it at some point. XD
Outside of 100% fort situations, Rogue will remain the top DPS class. While they generally will lack a tad in HP compared to the martial classes, its made up against traps/most spell effects through Evasion. Its very gear intensive beyond just the basic hack and slash with sneak attacks though. You'll want +skill items for trap smithing, stealthing quests, remaining unmovable in Titan, Radiance weapons (scimi works well here since you can UMD a Master's Touch scroll, Khopesh does well enough though if thats too much of a bother) for soloing/lowman/trash with a group you can't trust to get and keep aggro, Lit IIs for normal bosses, most epic bosses, trash, Min IIs or better randomly generated weapons for h/e bosses, as well as fitting in Toughness, GFL, and GS +45 HP. You'll also prolly need a set of UMD gear such as Big Top, Cartouche or Bunny Hat, +6 Cha item, +6 Cha skills GS item, etc. Once you start collecting things, you'll find it much easier and less gear intensive to hit the 39 mark for Heal scrolls.
Mentioned soloing with a hireling cleric some. Rogue can do very well with this. Enter stealth and near the enemies, they'll aggro onto your cleric at first and you can get in some easy SAs, generally dropping them quick. As far as healing and buffing, UMD will be your bread and butter for that. Able to give yourself AC buffs that while short, can be helpful early on or if running lower content. Stoneskin, Blur, and GH are all UMD-able as well. Once you're around 16 or so, Heal scrolls can be an option if you have the gear to hit their marks. Prior to that, pots and wands alternated can heal you quite quickly in between fights, but aren't too useful in the middle of a fight. Once you hit GS levels, soloing becomes essentially easy mode with Radiance weapons auto blinding on crits (6/20 hits for a Scimi) granting the enemy a 50% chance to miss due to blindness and auto sneak attacks.
Considering you're wanting a Human Khopesh user specifically, it's what I'd recommend, even more so if you're wanting to be top dog in DPS.

Few things to note.
1) TR build so you'll need to knock down the stats to a 32 point lvl, most likely by knocking off 1 Str and putting those three into Int or Cha, whether you'd like a tad more UMD or another full skill.
2) Skills were split a bit. With the Str I can hit, the DDO store bunny hat (more for UMD, but its +5 jump too) I can get to a standing 40 jump with just GH. Less reliant on jump clickies or casters that way. Move Silently was set as such because it allows me to get enough to stealth solo eClaw with +15 skill items, +7 Dex, +6 GS Dex skills, GH, etc. Pick Lock because outside of picking eVoN stuff, more isn't really needed.
3) Did Str the way I did due to the 3 piece epic Abishai set allowing me to hit 38 Str with a +6 item and +3 exceptionals.
4) Con tops out at 30 with +7 item and +3 exceptionals. Gear is fairly intensive, can check my sig for an idea of what you would need to hit these marks, though there are other options to hit such as well. +7 Str item and forgoing the Abishai set to hit 36 Str as an example.
5) Enhancements are pretty much set in stone IMO. The only swaying point is whether you want Toughness III or Subtle Backstabbing III. The rest are pretty much the optimal setup you'd want, specially Human Vers so you're able to stack +5 damage with +30% haste with no additional delay.
6) HP ends at 497 unbuffed, 24 fort, 26 reflex, 17 will unbuffed.
7) Standing UMD of 37, tad shy of what I was wanting.
8) With the above build, you'll have issues with epic traps if you lack the gear, such as +20 skill items, +6 Int skills GS item, etc. Human Vers Skills Boost should cover you though with a +15 skill item and +6 Int item.
Concerning modding this to fit the 32 point build, I'd drop Str to 17 with a +2 tome and raise either Int or Cha to 11 and use a +1 Int tome rather than +2, unless you plan on having +3 tomes, +7 items, and +3 exceptionals. +1 exceptions are pretty easy to fit in through DT. There's a lot of consideration to be done for starting stats since it largely depends on what bonuses you think you'll have access to. Very easy to end up odd if you plan for +3 exceptionals but find ToD being very, very lame. :( You always have the option of changing your Human Adaptability enhancements as well to balance out, so its not so bad for a Human to even up. If in such a situation, Toughness III or Subtle Backstabbing III will be your go to enhancements, unless its Con you have to toss. You'll need to take some fill in enhancements then.
For the PL: SoS, I'd recommend either OTWF or Quick Draw. In boss situations, you'll want to be hitting your boosts on each cool down unless a break period is coming soon (Suulo porting away, blades coming in on Harry, Velah prolly breathing soon, etc) so Quick Draw will help there, where as OTWF will help if you find yourself lacking a Bard in some content. Skill Focus: UMD can also be considered if you have issues getting your UMD up to 39 for Heal scrolls.
Lots to consider, and the other classes you're considering are all great when built well too. In no way is Rogue the absolute 110% best candidate for what you're looking for since your options are so open, but I can say for certain its a solid choice should you go that route. :D

Pure because my main is a mutliclass and I wish he wasn't...
What went wrong? Maybe it can be fixed?
OT:
Human Ranger. Works great for solo and group. As you have no racial weapon bonus and get extra feat Khopesh is logical decision.
You can go pure or splash 1 level of monk/fighter/rogue. Monk for extra feat and WIZ AC bonus, fighter for feat and attack speed boost, rogue for traps/UMD and attack skill boost.
A build like this can even solo Shroud.

i'd go 18pal/2rog for a nice UMD skill, dps, self healing, evasion along with super high saves...
there is nothing wrong with multiclassing.
