Tonight I rerolled my cleric from a battle cleric to a healbot. Enough to say that I hadn't bothered playing the toon since before Christmas. I decided to go through the Korthos experience rather than skip it, mainly because I needed some serious practice doing the healing thing from the start. After doing some runs on normal, I hit the harbour and a couple guildies saw me and joined up to group. Trouble is, they don't need the heals - and when they do mid-melee, they're right in range and easy to pick up. It feels too easy. So I give my apologies and explain I need to do some quests with the unknown or I'll never learn squat.
I don't usually lead groups. My excuse used to be 'no mic' and leading a group through typing is hard. But with the new headset, I was out of excuses and as there was a lack of LFMs up, I bit the bullet and put up the elite korthos run, accepting whoever applied first. Ended up with a rogue, a caster and 3 DPS and had a fantastic time. Lovely runs through the quests, no hassle, and felt no pressure to wade into the battle with my puny sword and board, but could sit back and heal as and when needed (okay I did try to wade in a few times - its hard to suppress the fighter inside).
On the one hand, I didn't get what I had originally hoped for, players who need endless saves etc. But on the other hand, it was great to be in a PUG and feel like the group was balanced and supporting each other in their respective roles.
My faith in PUGs is restored. Nice one, Khyber ^^

I blame luck, but its awesome that you found a full korthos party that didn't make you scream or punch the monitor. Kudos.

It is the matter of luck...
Sometimes I got great pugs (on G-land during "favor farming" -> great runs in harbor (including elite Irestone inlet underlevel (our main tanks were snow elies :-P)), and house K (including hard TtF), or Chrono "at level"; on K-dramaland -> undermaning GH flag quests).
Sometimes very bad pugs (G-land again Corromar where I heal the most, and killed the most (on gimed battle cleric, realy? Realy!), and got drained / FoDed (ok didn't prepared Deadblock item by there, with good pug it isn't a problem but with bad it can be a problem) by final boss (like rest of the party)).

I blame luck
I'll second that.
Had the same experience recently, where I popped in a group that was, for once, pretty excellent. Sometimes you just get the high end of the bell curve.

Sometimes, you gotta throw the numbers, like in our elite amrath two nights ago. 3 guildies, including my no-raid-gear HOrc monk and 3 pugs. Didn't have any issues except for the dq in bastion (too much trash respawn) and the ani boss (timing issues). Only had one consistent pug the entire time and except for the slight hiccups, they were flawless runs. Even had to ask more than once if it was actually run on elite :)

*claps twice*
I believe in magic!
....oh, sorry wrong thread.
But to the OP, good to hear and from someone who PUGs 99% of the time, most of my experience has been positive. Trainwrecks rarely happen.

Yeah, then you get a run like I had earlier tonight:
3-manned most of Invasion with a guildy and a buddy from a raiding channel, but had LFM up for more (mostly wanted a haste-bot for final fight).
1 PUG joins, I tell him how to get to portal, he didn't hear me (?) and didn't ask, and promptly ends up dead, says it's too hard to catch up, releases and drops group.
2nd PUG joins just as we get to the final hole. I ask him a few times if he's close when I see he's taking damage. No response. He enters quest and takes the portal to the end and buffs us while I explain our strategy (going back and forth between the two chest tiles, moving when I call it). Almost immediately I can tell there is a problem, as tiles are exploding constantly around us. Then I notice the wizard PUG is off on some other tile, not moving. We're shouting into the mic, trying to type, move and swing and he's not doing a **** thing of use. He comes over by us, but isn't staying with us at all. Thankfully, he died quickly and we were able to power through the rest of the fight.
Sometimes you get good ones, and sometimes you get ****.

Cool story bro. :D
Pugging has always been fun for me on Khyber. You have to be willing to be patient, you have to realize there will be people who just can't or won't cooperate, and you have to be willing to step up to the plate to provide some direction sometimes, but you just can't beat the good feeling of gathering a random group of people and working well together as a team.
Just remember that people talk loudest about things they don't like. If everything is great, you won't hear them talk about it much. The same holds in this situation. Most of the time pugging on Khyber is great, you just don't hear about it.

Yes. But those ones we actually talk about are so awfully bad though.... :)

I believe the pug’s are our are future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the ability they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the pug's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody wanting to become a hero
People need someone to look up to

From the sublime to the ridiculous. I got the sort of group I had originally hoped for. Won't go into details, but it got ugly (and kinda funny). At one point my cleric was lying there, out of mana and incapacitated, and I'm watching the numbers tick down to -8 thinking, hey they can backpack me and I'll go get a cup of tea, but then darn it, she recovered. I'd group with them again though. Not sure they'd group with me. Not every one appreciates an english chick getting snarky with them. I believe I need to channel patience if I'm going to make a go of this.
But I still believe in PUGs!

I'm happy to listen to an English chick get snarky any time.

She's an awesome English chick ;)
and I like the people that I usually end up bringing into quests and raids to fill a party... they are **** fine for entertainment purposes, especially when drinking tequila. Speaking of pugs... think it's shroud, VoD and hound tonight...should run and get the necessities before I log on...

as long as it isnt HoX, i believe in PUGs too.
they really arent as bad as all the belly-achers on the forums make them out to be, atleast not on sarlona. theyre hardly ever ideal, but usually sufficient.
