View Full Version : Will my pirate hat be useful in the future?

Hmm, just wondering, does anyone know if our current pirate hat will be useful in any future iterations of the Crystal Cove event, or can you make an educated guess based on past such events?

I'm trying to figure out how much I want to invest in my hat vs. how much to invest in an item, in particular do I want to make a level 12 item now for a level 12 character, or build the hat for the future for the time when the character will be level 20..and make the item at a future event?

It's a sure thing that the Cove will return at least a few more times as long as DDO itself doesn't shut down. Devs don't believe in wasting resources making one-shots.

Mabar and Risia returned many times, for example.

Buy multiple hats (they're fairly cheap, at least the lower end ones) and do both :) Pretty sure it'll come back - end of March is confirmed, and likely in the future or next year.

I grinded out extra versions of the Mabar items for all my alts, and that event came back before I levelled to those levels on the less frequently played alts. ;) Waste of time...

So, don't sweat it. I'd just make something you can use now and worry about upgrading later.

It looks like you can't upgrade items to level 20 for a lowbie unless you have shared bank and a level 20 character to run the event on.

Unless I'm mistaken there's no way to get diamonds and emeralds other than running the event on a level 20 character?

More assumed you have to run Crystal Cove at higher levels but since you get nothing for a level 5 or more below you it's a bit of a moot point. Gem drops from red names outside are exceedingly rare.

It seems to be +4 levels up or down to get gems. So, a level 16 gets mostly level 16 gems and a small % of the level 20 gems. But otherwise, if you're very low and can't run a few above your level and ideally on the next breakeven point (8/12/16) then yeah you're correct.

I could be wrong but isn't there a 3 to 1 conversion so in theory you could get enough lows to combine to higher. I am not 100% sure because I saw the 3 to 1 but didn't look close since I just ran on a level 20.

Upgrading gems would be the only way to get your lv 20 item with a lowbie, otherwise it is a waste of your time.

On hats, you only need one hat with doubloon and cove upgrades, the rest can be cheap hats so get as many as you need.

The hat powers are very good with nice level and low cost in shards so don't be fooled by the powerful named items, make sure you get those hats you will need for your toon and future TRs.

You can put heavy fort and +15 stat on it so I'd say it will be very useful in the future. At the cost of 20hp from your minos helm you can get +15 intim, +15 concentration etc rather cheaply and easily.

I've already begun adding the heavy fort + intim for my barb for trash intiming (actually using it a lot in the cove itself to intim groups of trash away from kobolds and casters)

I do wish I had the invis guard of the mabar cloak for my TR's. I meant to make a couple of cloaks each but burned out before I could.

Its good to know my hat will be useful after the event, but what I really wanted to ask originally was:

If I focus on enhancing my hat now I can focus on making items at a future occurance of the event.

I assume the hat I build now will still be usable then?

I would assume so, it's a permanent item.

You should have enough time to do the hat + other stuff unless your playtime is severely limited.

Or, you could put superior false life on it for +40 hp and use something else for fort.

As far as I can tell you can only convert between same-level gems, e.g. diamonds to emeralds and emeralds to diamonds.

I have done the same thing with my barb!

Heavy fort + 15 intim so I dont have to run around chasing!

Not just the hats are good but the stalwart trinkets are great, fully upgraded & still only a ML4 item - my lowbies are really benefiting from the earthen guard as a survivability booster.
