View Full Version : why change the morningstar's damage type?

I find it curious, since DDO is suppose to be based off of 3.5 rules, that they have modified the morningstars damage type to just bludgeoning. It was one of the few, rare weapons that offered multiple damage types, and was a common, simple weapon...meaning almost anyone can use one! Yes, its crit range may not be that of the khopesh and its base damage not like a dwarven axe or bastard sword (another weapon they chose to change in game, but thats another rant), however 1d8 is decent and you can always take the improved crit, or find one keen...etc. Having both bludeoning and piercing damage types really made the morningstar stand out in PnP...and its too bad that they did not carry this forward in DDO.

None of the multiple damage type weapons are coded as such. I believe they had some issues with system design and took the easy route.

Well short swords should have two types as well but its much easier to do just one type.

Yup, they got lazy when codng the engine in 5 years ago.

It's just like 1 handed weapons are supposed to be able to be used 2 handed if you have no offhand weapon and they don't work that way in thisgame.

They did adjust that for Rahl's Might though - it does pierce/slash/bludgeoning; maybe a suggestion now could get some traction if it was an easy enough change.

(that said, I have no idea how easy it may or may not be to do)

There is 1 that does, but it's not WAI. Some ogre magi weapon that I can't remember the name.

That means it can be done - and it could actually be interesting! :)
Craft a min2 khopesh and use it 2-handed when not using a shield!

if i remember short swords correctly, it was slash OR pierce, but not both. Morningstars are both bludgeon AND pierce....but yeah, the coders got lazy. LOL.
I would like to see that changed in one of the upcoming updates, especially since they have indeed maybe special/rare weapons that do this, so the coding can just be transfered....maybe 10, 11? Maybe that is just wishful thinking lol.

EXACTLY! BASTARD SWORDS!!! COME ON!!! 1.5X DAMAGE!!!! They call it the sword and a half for a reason! Can use two handed for the 1.5x damage or one handed for normal damage. Again, the things that make certain gear in pnp more usable is NOT being utilized in ddo...makes me wonder if the dev's are biased!

Actually they are known as hand and half swords not sword and a half.

In 3.5 khopesh is also x2 crit multiplier. Go figure. As long as we are ranting about changing things to meet the description of PnP, lets start there eh? We can give it its "maiming" quality here in DDO which is similar to "brutal weapon" in PnP. Let the riots begin. :p

The Pesh error was LONG ago acknowledged as an error, but its one that is too late to go back on.

The other suggested changes in this thread would improve gameplay without hurting balance or past grinding.

Indeed the engine just had room for basic weapons as in other mmos and none of the rich aspects of weapons in d&d.

In a basic mmo you just have to pick the weapon that does most damage and you have bonuses for.
People keep asking why do we have suboptimal weapons in the list and is because of this.

But in d&d the choices are on a) the damage type, b) the proficiency aka training and c) size to wield in one or two hands.
This allows for a very rich combat system, where what weapon you use vs. a monster matters a lot.

In ddo you don't have any of these mechanics: there's only one damage type on weapons, you don't have the special usages of exotic weapons, and you don't have option when it comes to wielding in one or two hands.

Thus neither of the weapon choices are done right, presumibly because they went with said basic weapon mechanics.
Sure it works for a online real time mmo game, but d&d has potential to be a groundbreaking combat system.

hmmm...maybe they could incorporate an oldy but a goodie weapon from the AoW adventure series form Dungeon Magazine 124-135....the executioner mace! That thing is bad a$$:

THW:
2d6 x3 B&P or B&S...sweet!
or, better yet, the mace of Kyuss:
4d6x3 + 2d6 spawn damage! woot!

Yeah there is this one guy at turbine who sits at home with their collection of antique Khopesh's gently stroking them and whispering about how they are the best weapon in the world and that they have secretly infiltrated a games company and use their influence to make everyone who plays ddo know that khopeshs are the best .

Then obviously, if he's single, he's been rolling 1s on all of his bluff, diplomacy, haggle, and appraisal checks on women

But I would be willing to bet he has quite a high skill level in "self buffing".
