I could not find a way to trade or buy a lower level gem. For example, at 20th level when you run crystal cove at level or above only diamonds and emeralds drop. I would very much like to get Sapphires, however. If you run quest at 16th level you can get sapphires but take a huge 75% hit on crystals obtained.

This makes purchasing and upgrading the 16th level ornamental dagger really tough if you are a capped. The 20th level epic dagger is not that great, while the 16th level third tier dagger is amazing (better in fact than any current epic item of its kind).

yeah, definently a downside.

However, they give you the option of running the cove on whatever level difficulty you would like, so if you need to get a low level item to upgrade your epic item, just run one of your crystal coves on level 4 once to get the gems you need.

True plus realize if you are only there for the stolen gems, just let the kobolds fail. Go around and kill to get the gems, you don't even lose your compass because you won't have finished.

Didn't look at the lower tiers, what is on the lvl 16 version?
