View Full Version : Tasty Ham: Urban Myth or Gear Threat?

Confirmation or it's a myth.
Chaos balls, as found in HoX and Xorian, can destroy a piece of gear and leave a Tasty Ham in your inventory as a replacement. Anything not bound and attuned is game from the Cure Serious Pot off the top of the 100 stack to the +5 Anarchic Burst of Greater Construct Bane you just bought but didn't have a chance to bind yet...

I've run into those balls hundreds of times, and have never noticed losing a piece of equipment. That doesn't mean it doesn't/hasn't happened. Just that if it can happen, I think the circumstances required, or the percentage chance to occur, is pretty low.
If you're worried about this, just make sure you have plenty of inventory spots available. As far as I know, Tasty Hams are the only possible item acquisition from a close encounter with a chaos orb.

Last week I was running hound on my paladin and got hit with one of those and it destroyed my offhand Min II khopesh. I have a bug report filed but so far haven't received any responses.

Yikes! That really sucks, man. Can you relay any other info? Was your inventory full? Do you know what spell was cast on you by the ball?
Oh, and did you check the buy back section in a vendor? I've heard, but never tested, that items you purposely destroy in a quest will be in your buy back list.

Lost a +2 holy burst of enfeebling rapier about a year ago in Xorian Cypher. Not a myth. Never keep ham around so the weapon was taken and I was given ham... whether the ball changed it into ham or that was two random occurances I don't know.
EDIT: Not kidding. Have gained ham on several occasions around chaos orbs and not noticed anything missing (could have been just pots or arrows as people stated), but that one run in Xorian I lost a weapon, it was not in buyback, couldn't find it anywhere, just gone, and had ham in my inventory that wasn't there before.
If it hasn't happened to you you're lucky. I'm just glad it was something I would have vendored anyway.

Somtimes it hits things that are a little more precious.

Funny...i have collected over 100 tasty hams from Invaders and Hounds and have never lost an item.
/ah i see some where being funny and others are just making stuff up....nice to see who does what.....as stated have actually gone out of my way to get hit just for the hams....no losses in 5 years of testing....i will test so more.

OG, Pallai noooooooooo...
Why it does it always have to be a curse pots thing with you?
In response to the OP, I'm reasonably certain it starts hamming your unbound **** starting with the top left slot of your first inventory page and moving on like you're reading a book. Most (organized) people don't notice it because they keep things like spell components, pots, and other unequipable items on the first page so they can't be moved out of place. These blessed souls don't notice, because it only takes one item at a time or one out of a stack at a time. Unorganized people (like myself) lose weapons and equipment. Lost my first Planar Gird in Xorian Cypher mere moments after acquiring it. Best part: I STILL HAVEN'T LEARNED MY LESSON.
How to use this to your advantage: Strip down, buy a TON of arrows from the general vendor in the harbor, and run through the orbs for hours at a time. Instant glorious hamfall!

Not sure how you plan on screenshotting it, though. Seems like a very difficult thing to capture with any reliability. There's no message saying "Congratulations! Your blank greensteel greataxe has turned into delicious ham!" You just clap and jump in the air in a very improbable way while running and it's gone.

gonna go make a gimp, give it 100 masterwork arrows, and have it run around in a cleared xorian cypher instance. screenshotting the loss of items.

If this is true, it is just wrong. It should maybe damage the items if they are not stackables, but stealing them outright is just wrong considering that maybe one out of one hundred random drops actually nets you anything worth keeping.

If not, get thee hence monks and gather ye hams for the greater good! I'd really love to know if this is true - might explain where my ioun stone went...

Get naked. Bank everything. Fill all slots with starter cure light wounds from the IQ.
Bring hireling to keep you alive off to the side.
Go stand in some orbs somewhere. You get lots of ham.
It works. Its entertaining. Once or twice.
So is it actually a myth? The losing equipment/items bit :P
I always tumble around in the groovy orbs and I have hundreds of Tasty Ham (nom nom!) in my bank. Haven't noticed anything of value missing.
On second thought, would this be related to the fact that some of the random effects include damaging spells which would destroy random items?

it SEEMS to hit consumables more than anything. i've never noticed an item missing before anyway.
And i have seen it eat a major mem pot because i happened to see the # of pots go down on the hotbar when the orb hit. And i got a ham.
But i wouldnt rule out that it can eat anything unbound. It is CHAOS after all.

Kargon was a player and forum poster who role-played his forum posts with a peculiar lisp; and his posts were helpful as well as hilarious. He captured the essence of DDO and our admiration.
I hope to be the second character in DDO to have an item named after him: "Shaamis' Best Brew" or "Shaamis' Everfull Mug"
I still have a long way to go however to get to Kargon's level.

I had this happen to me. I have an entire hotbar filled with weapons, played xorian cipher, came out with a ham, thought "oh cool" and a day or two later noticed the hotbar had an empty space. Thought "hmm.." didn't make much of it. While it was a weapon that I thought important enough to hotbar, I can't remember what it was, so I don't feel too bad. It wasn't my lit II or any other crafted weapon, so I'm okay with it.

Took me months to figure out what that was. :D
Edit - Take all these comments with a grain of salt, I have never lost anything from running through chaos balls and I'm sure if people did, there would be a huge outcry about it.
Just like people who talk about losing ingredients bags or other valuables, in the end it turns out that they either misplaced them or accidentally vendored/destroyed them.

I was curious and tested it just now in XC normal just now.
I filled my inventory space with Siberys Dragonshard fragments and assorted junk.
Locked all of the items down and stood on an Orb until I got a ham.
I got the clap clap emote and the error
"Inventory Error
All inventory slots are full
Tasty Ham
"
I got a screenshot which I will upload later.
edit http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/aggravator/untitled.jpg
Next I unlocked one item in my backpack - then several weapons.
No loss of item just the same Inventory full error message.

incidentally enough, I was just testing this in XC as well.
When the inventory is full, I also got the "Inventory Full" message. So then I destroyed an item to free up space.
After about 10 mins of standing in that first orb, I checked back through my inventory and had a stack of 5 hams and was missing 1 heal scroll (off a stack of 98) and nothing else. I sat there for another 20 mins with zero loss of items and another 10 hams showed up.
I'm not sure exactly when the heal scroll was destroyed but I am certain it happened (I ran a fraps through my inventory when I started testing). I can't be certain it was tied to a ham incident but I don't know of any other spell the orbs cast that would potentially destroy something in my inventory.

This sounds familiar, could it be that you swapped out the weapon and the game tought the slot was still empty?
If it is anything like the abbot's bug where items that drop on exit are said to cause the wrong slot to drop then it'd be very very hard to replicate.
Lost scrolls and pots could be from item damage so those don't count.

Thanks so much to the both of you for testing it out. Losing things like potions to damage is pretty much a risk anywhere in the game, so I'm totally cool with that (still "gah!" every time an invis pot gets evaporated though, heh). Still haven't solved the mystery of my ioun stone, however - time to give my TR caches, shared bank, multitude of alt banks and inventories, etc. a good clear out. Hoarding a kingdom's-worth of junk is waaay more likely to be my problem, rather than thieving chaos blobs from another dimension.

Xoriat Orbs can give you Tasty Ham. You will see an animation of Clapping Twice and Cheering with a fist over your head to signal this has happened.
Before going into a quest with Xoriat Orbs take a Screen Shot of each of your packs. If the ham replaces an item, your gear got ham nabbed, if not, it was a free ham.
If a free ham, it will stack with other hams, if not..... at least your screen shot can tell you what you lost.
Cheers, and eat up.

Kargon also went into a dreadful rage when he went intot he tavern adn found that his favorite meal of Tasty Ham was missing.
He destroyed said tavern, and everything in his path until coming upon a mighty ArchMage which granted him the power to restore tasty ham back to his favorite eating establishment. Why do you think that Harbor area was closed for construction. Kargon had destroyed everything.
