Stop it

It was old years ago... its no longer funny after the 50 billionth time

if you need something to entertain yourself during a shroud run I recommend something over 40 proof

I personally vow to tell the noobs in the party whats going on every time someone tries it... shroud is painful enough without listening to the half baked portal explanation over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

seriously, enough already

The novelty of that part of the Shroud is impossible to comprehend for you jaded vets. Don't deny a first timers that feeling that you get. It's a time honoured tradition and right of passage.

You were the kid that quit because he got hazed too much, right?

Haha, that one is funny, tried it, but never in a raid - thats mean.. (:

And the shroud thingy is just for those with bad humor lol, well, its kinda funny if the firsttimer gets all worried, but it he recalls or something like that its also mean.

Pulled that on a guildies first run recently, everyone in the group was on voice yelling at him. We all had fun.
Just because your an old fart in DDO doesnt mean that we newer blokes cant have any fun. If you dont like it, dont join groups with first timers.

The joke got old for me the time I watched some poor newb DC seconds after he "killed us", probably embarressed and not wanting to get told off for the wipe.

Still, I've only seen that once in hundreds of times the joke was pulled. I don't do it, but I don't mess with other people's fun.

I do however think it should only be done to friends or guildies.

Sillk

I'm OK with it.

I've been in a totally random PUG where someone mentioned he had never been in before. The entire PUG, without any prompting, pulled off a joke, and I think the "victim" appreciated it.

The same PUG took 3-4 tries to kill all the named in pt2 before they respawned.

I agree with the "rite of passage".... but keep it simple. No need to drone on and on, or help out whomever is leading the victim down the setup.

If you're not funny, don't try to tell the joke.

If you think you're funny.... find out from someone else if you really are

While I understand where the OP is coming from, as a recent Shroud initiate, I have to say that I appreciate a good-natured "rite of passage", even when I'm pretty sure my leg is being tugged. When done right, it's a great way to make someone feel like they've really "arrived" in DDO (or at least it was in my case.) I'll admit, though, that some leaders can drag it out for longer than is probably necessary...

that also has a tendency to slow down the raid and prolong the pain that is the shroud grind

So this isnt an issue of caring about the new people in the shroud, or caring about whether their experience is a good or bad one......

It's about getting the Shroud done a minute faster?

LOLOLOLOLOL.

Dude, DDO is not that intense! I drink alcohol every time I play! I get invited to Shroud events constantly, cuz people luv the Drunk Monk! it's not about completion, it's about FUN. If you are only having fun with top-speed completions, you need to quit playing and do something more "extreme" like defusing a time-bomb while skydiving, and you can't open the chute till you defuse the bomb.

THEN time will be important.

but for Shroud completions, jeez!

LOLOLOLOLOL. thanks for a laugh this morning.

I've seen this happen more than once...either someone getting mad, dc'ing, even had someone apologize after they teleported out once.

This is a funny joke. But I agree it's a prank you play on someone you know - not a complete stranger for whom you have no frame of reference to determine how they're likely to react.

Im have been playing a long time as well and I still find it funny, its a stress reliever particularly in a PUG when tensions get tight.

Ive never understood people quitting after this happens, If I screw something up I take it like a man and apologize and when that happened I got even more **** from everyone in the group. Ive even got to play this joke on my wife in her first shroud run. Sorry no real life screenie from that one.

To the person who mentioned it slows down the raid, why are you in such a hurry. I think the timers should start when you walk into the raid not when you finish, farming is the boring grind I complete every raid that doesnt wipe. Its farming that makes the game repetitive and boring.

To the OP if you dont like a little fun every now and then you need to find something else to do, this is a game after all.

If someone starts into the explanation just turn down your headphones until its over, listen to music, or go have a smoke.

Hazing is fun.

It actually wasn't done to me. I am not sure why, but whatever. I was a pug spot in another guilds run where their subject dc'd after the deaths, and it was actually more funny when he reconnected and saw everyone alive.

If you are not having fun, or want to dictate how others have fun, it may be time to evaluate a few things.

I always used to enjoy TF runs. The usually succeeded and they were always fun. Made Dream nuts when I grouped with you. lol

I also earned my first forum infraction points (which I still have, stupid points were permanent then) for replacing the 'a' with an 'e' in faces during one of the many TF/AUM forum threads.

Is it okay if I still occasionally advise people that Alt-F4 will bring up the puzzle solver?

There is a clear difference between a harmless chuckle that does not impact the player, the quest or completion and griefing in the guise of a joke.

The first time portal tradition is a harmless chuckle -- one that has been exposed often enough on the forums to not catch some people. Edit: It seems some people have experienced players DCing or exiting out. I've never seen that happen. However, I do understand the potential. My response is, when we all die, to quickly say, "It's alright, we can recover from this. Don't release." A smarter person might work it into the set up, "If we do die don't release, there's a way to recover, its just harder is all...."

Alt-F4 is griefing no matter how benign you try to make it sound.

So, no, it is not ok.

We usually use it on people when we have asked multiple times if this is anyones first run, and no one spoke up, but it becomes apparent that it is indeed at least one persons first run.

They deserve the harmless hazing, and we deserve the LOL.

The joke IS rather lame, but some people are really good at telling jokes. In those cases, great, I don't mind.

But most of the time you get someone babbling a half-baked story while snickering and even the most gullible noob would not believe a single word of it...

You know that one uncle that's always telling jokes but no one ever laughs? Some of you are that uncle but don't realize it. ;)

I do this to newbies in my shroud runs, my guildies love it as i am very good with the 'dead pan and serious talk'.

It seems strange to me that someone who hates the 'shroud grind' doesn't like a little humor to lighten the grind.

Oh and don't forget to grab the relic at the end of PoP. it's a really great item!!!

I like it when that happens because while the leader is giving the explanation of what to do, it gives me time to go /afk and grab some food, refresh the water, feed the cat and maybe toss in a load of laundry. Then I come back to see if anything has happened.

Ends up being some of the most productive time for me while still playing DDO.

Yes, the joke is old but I still get a kick out of it. I also care about noobs and am not too concerned if a quest takes a couple minutes longer because people are having fun. Weird huh? ;)
Remember, noobs keep the game going. Think back before f2p when at certain times you'd only see a couple hundred people on the server and the frustration of getting groups together. It reminds me of the Gordon Gekko greed is good speech in Wall Street:
"Noobs, for lack of a better word, is good".

My problem with the stupid thing is the idiots who explain and over explain it where you need to click the exact middle and go on for so long about it that it's obvious that they are full of it.

Ok:
A) What mechanic ANYWHERE ELSE in the game works like that?
B) How stupid must you be to believe that, given A) above?
C) How stupid are you that you're the new guy and you're "given" that "honor?" Hey new guy, do this perfect or we all die. Yeah, ok.
D) Its the howls of "You killed us nooo!" that really bring this one home for me. I mean, I might almost believe it if I had less than 8 brain cells.

I'm all for fun and games. I'm all for hazing. But don't be stupid. Send the new guy to pull the fire lever in TS. Thats funny. Know why? Because theres not some assanine explanation for why it must be pulled, and pull it in this special way thats different from every other stupid lever in the game.

New guy, grab the lever to open the gate, we're heading up the hall.

Thats believable.

Hey new guy, we're in a raid, and you need to click the exact center of that portal (you know, the exact center of the object in DDO that have no 'parts' - they are just objects) and if you do it wrong we're all gonna die and wipe. We trust you, new guy, with no experience, to possibly wipe the raid.

Really?

Its more the insult to intelligence than anything else that I hate about that whole thing. Its not hazing and it's not funny if the person doing it doesnt believe a word you're saying.

group conformity is a psychological phenomenon attributed to what you are calling an insult to intelligence - if 10 people you've never met are instructing you through a raid you've never done, chances are you are probably nervous and not giving a second thought about just following instructions - even if what they are telling you is not logically rational.

You are right, more and more these days the joke is poorly executed and the target can pick up on the joke. but I have noticed even with people giving a poor execution, the target still falls for it - just on blind faith. Remember, the cake is a lie.

Most mission pranks only really work in wholy or mostly guild runs. When pugs started doing the portal gag, it was too old. I'm more partial to sending a /tell to a first timer guildy that everyone races to the middle in part 2 for the extra chest. No one ever expects that ...

Oh please it's tradition, and no it's not actually funny, but it is in that stupid Chris Farley comedy kinda way. You can see that he's about to get hit in the head, but you still laugh when it happens. Oh, and its a GAME! It's meant to be fun, its nothing to get annoyed with.

There are so many more rants you could choose, seriously move on.

I just pulled this prank on someone the other day, and boy did she fall for it hard. When we told her what had happened she burst out laughing and said she felt like a noob. I told her to consider it her "Shroud Hazing". We all had a good laugh and she sent me a tell afterwords saying she felt like a part of the group now and had a very fun run!
OP were you never hazed in school or sports? Its part of the bonding process, and it will never get old.

The novelty of that part of the Shroud is impossible to comprehend for you jaded vets. Don't deny a first timers that feeling that you get. It's a time honoured tradition and right of passage.

I daresay it almost has taken on that right-of-passage status.

.....remember to click it just right.....

I leave that part out. Perhaps I'm more nefarious? I simply state that it should be the first-timer's honor to "click us all through" to the final encounter when they think they're ready to go.

Everyone else in the raid usually takes care of the rest on their own, with comments like:

OMG!

Did he click on the EXACT center, did he???

He's killed us ALLLLLL!!!!

I see dead halflings...

Is this heaven?

Invariably, even though I say nothing else and don't make a big deal out of it, everyone else does, or at least makes a comment of some kind, which is then explained away as we all prep for the final encounter.

Not sure who started it, but it just might have gone from "cult following" to "tradition" somewhere along the way...it's silly, and seemingly pointless...yet people just won't stop participating.

Thank you for attending our shroud last night! i am sorry that us playing the shroud joke on our friend was in bad taste, but if it is any condolence we all laughed pretty hard at him for a good 10 minutes. I thought I made it clear that it was someones first time even before we started the run, but maybe it was lost in translation. Anyway Sorry the shroud joke offended you, but we had great fun in doing it.

On Argo, at least, I've found the prank to be a friendly form of initiation into Shroud running groups. Everyone must be initiated. It was done to me and those we had done it to me and so on. I also have administered the prank or supported someone else in doing so. It is a ritualistic right-of-passage and part of the player culture.

Of course as soon as the party dies, everyone groans and complains. But before the victim can get too embarassed or upset it is explained that this is just an initiation prank and they didn't actually do anything wrong.

Not once has it ****ed off the newbie in my experience.

Really?

Its more the insult to intelligence than anything else that I hate about that whole thing. Its not hazing and it's not funny if the person doing it doesnt believe a word you're saying.

You're so wise and correct!

Guess what!? If you give me all of your credit card numbers, and one of them is lucky, you'll win a prize!

Works every time

For those of you who enjoy the joke of asking the newbie to hit the center of the portal. I have news for you, I derive a certain methodical and devious pleasure of deflowering your joke. After checking to see if everyone has finished shrining and looting it is I who clicked the portal even before the noob could. I have always found this more fun than sitting there waiting for your joke to be had. So remember just when you think it was the noob...it very well could of been me or one of the eleven others in the party. Muhaha! :D

Anyway Sorry the shroud joke offended you, but we had great fun in doing it.

cheers

I too co-hosted this shroud, the one that I believe sparked your original thread Rathic.

Sorry if our enjoyment caused you so much pain.

I have not run the Shrou with a first timer in months. But I would definitely do the joke if I did.

I cant wait to have the joke pulled on me. I pulled the lever in TS and have not reached the Shroud yet...but learning the game from Fun, experienced players is more enjoyable to me than running solo and trying to figure out why the dang place dead ends if i miss a lever somewhere and just keep running in circles trying to figure out what is wrong....I soloed WW my first time and could not find one of the levers....it took me forever to backtrack every step and search every nook...had a good guide the second time and learned the route without pause. Someone taking their time to teach me the ropes deserves the chance to pull a prank or two...halfling style, not kobold style.

To OP, Don't want to hear it? turn down the volume on your speakers/headset untill we are in part5.

As for it being a mean trick? I don't think so.. 99% of the time even the nooblet has fun with it and is having a laugh about it. only once did i see a nooblet FO out. =)(

It's Always fun to do reguardless.. Next you will say First timers on VOD or HOX will not get to open the chest?!

Carrot top is not funny. Shroud Part 4 portal + Noob is funny.

Last but not least.. Shourd is hard? o.0
