View Full Version : Are HElves viable now as a top DPS race?

My own thoughts are -

HOrc > WF > Dwarf/Halfling > Human > Elf/Drow

I'd like to think that maybe, just maybe, the +3d6 Rogue Dilettanta could make HElf second best only to HOrc, but it's highly situational.

Opinions please?

There's a discussion in the monk forums about this topic. In summary, I rolled a dark helf with rogue dilettante today. lol

HOs are tops for THFers, rogues, barbs, ftrs and most splashes that have haste boosts or rogue levels.

HEs are tops for monks, rangers, arcane archers and the rest of the TWFers.

Paladins you can make a case for either way.

handedness taken into account only in total

horc - 2 dam (4 str) + 3dam (power attack) +4 (racial weapon), +2 dam (rage) + 4 dam (fury) = +10 dam w/ racial 2h weapon & pa (13 raging, 18 w/ less than 10% health)
helf - .5 dam (1 str), 3d6 (sneak attack, 10.5 average) 5 (human versatility)= +.5 dam w/ 1h weapon (11 sneak attacking, 16 w/ human versatility)
halfling - -1 dam (str), 8 dam (guile) = -1 dam w/ 1h weapon (7 sneak attacking)
warforged - +3 (power attack) = +3 dam w/ pa & any weapon
elf - +2-4 dam (racial weapon) = +2-4 dam w/ racial weapon
dwarf - +2-4 dam (racial weapon) = +2-4 dam w/ racial weapon
drow - +2 dam (racial weapon) = +2 dam w/ racial weapon
human - .5 (1 str), 5 (human versatility) = +.5 dam w/ 1h weapon (+5.5 w/ human versatility)

ignored bonuses:
halfing thrown racial weapons - thrown weapons do terrible damage
glancing blows
twf
double strike
human feat
etc.

Yes, I counted +1 str as +.5 damage. It's just easier that way.

human versatality - activation time and limited use time mean that almost nobody uses this for the damage boost

Not the case at all. There are many situations where you have a break in a fight and can activate the damage boost on the run: ToD part1 and 3, Chrono throughout, Epic Deep, EDQ2, EDQ1, EV6, most of the old raids if you run those and virtually all trash killing.

Yup. And in those situations its a clicky that reads the same as +10 strength if you're a TWF.

That being said, it really should be a +8 damage boost for two-handed weapons...

You know what, so did I until about 5 minutes ago.

I knew that HV had been put on a different timer to other AB's but I didn't realised til just now (when I swapped it in to experiment) that they could be activated *simultaneously* (ie, hitting button x+y together).
I thought I'd have to wait for two sets of activations, but no.

So my Kensai can hit 12 FHB's with HV damage for some seriously nice burst DPS.

Humans (and therefore HElves) just went up a few notches in my estimation.

I am reading through the HE rogue race feat and it says +1d6. Could someone please explain why the OP
says +3d6?

Thanks

The associated enhancements bump it up to +3d6 which doesn't stack with Rogue SA, but does stack with Ninja Spy and, presumably, the Rogue PL Feat.
