View Full Version : Late Penalty? really?

so a guildie of mine needed help in a Coal Flag run after they're previous tank-type bailed and asked me for help. I agree and go in....they hadn't yet made it to the 2nd spiral up...I com in to a -80% which I expect seeing as I came in a bit late, so no worries....
by the end of the quest, I was still at -50% on late entry penalty....despite ranking top on kills and rezzing the entire party more than once =(
Any idea why this went this way? I DO know I definitely contributed.... >.>
And if it was something stupid....could we figure out new coding for lessening Late penalty by contributions, not "time in quest"? or am I just SOL?

Its based off of quest completion time vs how long of that time you were in.
I'm not sure of the exact formula, but if you were in, say, 40/108 minutes, that's probably the reason. Sure, you still did a lot, and helped, but because they took forever getting to that second spire, your XP suffered.
That's likely what occurred, at least.

108min completion time is the problem. Did you arrive like an hour after the quest started? It probably would have been better to restart the quest when you joined. A solo fvs or arcane zerger can complete CC with 5 stones in backpack in about 15-20min. Even a house of horrors run should probably not take over one hour on normal difficulty.
In your case it does seem quite ironic... sounds like you came and bailed out your buddies, but you know what they say... "No good deed goes unpunished."

I'm thinking so...I normally solo this stuff anywho... got it down to about 22 min solo IF I killed things lol...
idk how long they were in before I got there, but it was really just to help a guildie out =)
Got Twigs too =D

Im not exactly sure how they get 16 deaths in coal chamber, makes me think they went for the optional chest and almost wiped right off the bat or something.

Had this happen for a Shadow Crypt run not too long ago.
Joined a group and asked if they had started yet. They said no, so I headed into the quest. By the end of a longish run (around 40 minutes for me) I was still at an XP penalty.
Apparently the putzes had been sitting inside the quest for around an hour trying to fill the group.

yep, dun sit inside the quest while the group fills, and restart if it takes too long.
that cc time is not good. one hour is usual if things go slow.
that said nothing stops u from trying to finish it if u struggle, like when spending four hours in reenter the kobold.
in any case no one does cc for xp as much as it's done for mats, u can get ur xp elsewhere tho cc gives good xp.
and with cc being a tricky quest, make sure u are doing it right, learn the climbing tips, don't spawn monsters by walking on the shadowy dirt, don't let dungeon alert build and remember every single monster but the boss is vulnerable to banishment.

I REALLY, REALLY wish I or someone else in the group had known that the first time I ran CC on my cleric. I still hesitate to do that quest because of the first experience I had with it (let's just say we would have been ECSTATIC to have finished in an hour ;) ), even though it's a pretty easy quest if someone knows the route.

I actually have never seen my late penalty ever drop below 50% :(

late penalty starts at i think 10 minutes in the quest (which is why "stepping in, going afk can be dangerous in short stuff")
from that point on, the formula is
[Your Time in Quest]/[Completion Time] < 25% = 80% loss
[Your Time in Quest]/[Completion Time] < 50% = 50% loss
[Your Time in Quest]/[Completion Time] > 50% = 0% loss

infrequently the late penalty will still show at 50% in the quest log but you will get full xp awarded in your chat window and added to your xp counter. It's a bug that has been around for a long time.

It's not a bug. The devs have stated that the quest XP screen only updates when certain thigns are done (monster killed, breakable broken, etc...) so if you're just waiting, nothing triggers an update to the screen, although your XP may have adjusted itself.

I didn't see any changes....still only got around 7k XP.... oh well...
*the screen changed again for every kills, and I received the last kill (see combat log) for the end boss*

Thanks for the info! It's nice to know how the penalty is calculated, but I still agree with the OP that there should be a way to reduce the penalty other than being in the quest a long time. The penalty clearly states "you have arrived late and contributed little" so contributing lots should be able to reduce or outright eliminate the penalty. Penalizing someone for entering a quest late when they were still able to contribute a lot seems pointless.

You'll get a worse penalty from your girl if you incure an 'early' penalty, so its not that bad..
Someone can do the math for this 1 I'm sure..;)
Just curious - do you have a source for this?
we played around with it a long time ago but the code hasn't changed. the only part i can't remember is the initial lockout timer which was either 10 or 15 minutes.
there is a thread running around where a dev/tester chimes in and says that killing mobs lowers the penalties. someone then goes into kobold assault and proves them utterly wrong.
whenever i do an in progress run, i tend to watch timers so that if it gets to the point where someone is going to be stuck in the -80% i won't let them in (mainly in something like von5 or TF).
