How do you get your sense skills up ? Meaning when your walking along and the little blueish gray door comes up on the screen and you here "your keen senses detect a draft from somewhere " keying you to search. I need more of that. And how do you detect traps if you can't sense them? I mean it seems fairly inadequate to walk 3,4,5 steps and search, and keep doing that, you would go nowhere fast and take forever. Unless you really know the quest how do you find them. If I'm with a group without a rogue and someone say trap I can then usually find it and disarm it . But how do I know without someone telling me? I'm a lv 15 fighter , ranger, with 2 lvs of rogue . I can get my search, unlock, disable skills up to 32-34 and higher with some better gear. I can get most (90%) so far of everything I do on normal, hard, now on elite at lv 1-13, And I was surprised being able to do elite stuff . But HIPS is very tuff for me, casual yes ,normal mostly , and on hard not even. So I guess my big question is , how do I find it if I have never been on a quest befor? Run it on casual and take notes? LOL. But really ! What's the trick here?
And one other thing I have noticed while walking along at times not always I see these soft transparent red laser like beam going to a targeted area but there is really nothing there I've searched and found nothing but this does happen and I assume it means something it's almost the same thing as when use find a trap but it's les pronounced and I have never found anything when it does happen . So what is it? What's it trying to tell or show me here?

Well, These are how the skills work:

Disable: Obviously, this is used for disable boxes once found.

Search: For finding boxes and secret doors. Another no brainer.

Spot: This is probably where you are lacking. When you have a high enough spot skill it will tell you there is a trap in the area, or you sense a gust of wind ect. Having your spot skill high enough seems to be what you are lacking. In essence, take notes and learn the quests so that you can just know the locations...It would seem a waste to reroll, or even LR just for points into Spot on a splash character.

The skill that gives you the "your keen senses detect..." messages is Spot. Look for an item (usually goggles) that ends with, "of the Eagle." Keep those on when you are in a quest you don't know too well, then switch in goggles "of minute seeing" for searching and "of disabling" to work on the trap itself.

You can bump these skills up a little more with relative ease by:
- having someone cast Heroism or Greater Heroism on you
- using a potion (for regular Heroism) or a clicky (for either of them)
- using a potion that raises intelligence (for search/disable) or wisdom (for spot)
- rogue or ranger skill boost ability

I don't know the answer to your last question.

Your last question sounds like you're talking about the eyebeams that were introduced recently, but in my experience they only work on a Search. The red eyebeams tell you where the trap is, and the white eyebeams tell you where the box is. If you don't get any white eyebeams, you might not be close enough to the box, or one might not exist.

I'd look for a wisdom item to swap in when you know a trap might be ahead. Spot is based on wisdom.

The voice of the master from deleras also adds +1 luck bonus to all skills and saves.

The head of good fortune from reavers fate in gianthold adds +2 luck bonus to all skills and saves.

Heroism potions add +2 morale bonus to all skills. Maybe try to get a planar gird or ask a nice caster for greater heroism (+4 morale bonus).

Also get the highest available +spot item for your lvl. At lvl 15 thats +15.

And the "red laser beams" also point at traps that cant be disabled (spikes, loose floors, etc.) and sometimes even at traps on another level of the dungeon.
Don't let them fool you, if you don't find a box just move on.

Yeah, it's 'Spot' you are looking for here.

Also, in some quests the traps are random so a good Spot is still nice to have even if you have the quest memorized. The places they are set are not random, but sometimes the trap is there sometimes not.

Spot will also help you see stealthed mobs before they attack.

Thanx to all replies here for this wonderful information ! I should have realized this but I'm still a newbe and learning now I have got to work on getting my spot up I presently have 10 pnts into it . Can I find a + spot with insight bonuses on the same item? I do have the delaras trinket luck of the heros , so what's a good spot skill number to hit? Thanx again for all the help

I'm not sure what you mean by "+ spot with insight bonuses" - you can find items with bonuses to spot and ability bonuses (like, Clever Goggles of the Eagle), but you're better off getting something clean: i.e. only with the spot bonus, because the minimum level is lower. Item bonuses go up to +15, and the Min Level is the same as the bonus amount.

As far as the skill level to spot most traps, I'd say a general rule is the level of the dungeon plus 6 or 7; it might be higher for dungeons on elite. Secret doors will usually have lower difficulties.

As far as I know, the insight bonus to attack is only on those goggles, and you can't find attack bonuses on Spot items (unless it's on some odd named item I haven't seen). You can get spot bonuses on rings, I believe, but that's much less common. You also shouldn't need the Korthos goggles after a few levels.

This is my main toon so I have nothing else feeding me gear and really good + weapon are expensive . Like my best weap Is a + 2 holy burst of enfeebling Khopesh and a +3 improved cursespewing of pure good kukri and everything else is 1zys and 2zys and with power attack on that + 2 bonus to hit all of a sudden isn't all that bad. Just my thoughts on those Korthos googles. Thanks for your reply though I'll find a way to keep my spot up, it's chalanging but its not so bad I do it anyway and have gotten pretty good at it so one more thing is not to difficult
