View Full Version : is night shield bugged?

I noticed that, according to its description, the level 1 cleric spell "night shield" is supposed to give a bonus to my saves; however, this doesn't appear on my character sheet when I cast the spell like, say, the bonus to saves that I get from using something like human versatility does. Is this how it's supposed to work? Thanks!

The bonus to saves from the Night Shield spell is typed Resistance, which many other items also give. Same type bonuses do not stack*. So perhaps you're wearing another item that gives a Resistance bonus to saves?

*: There are a few exceptions to this rule, but at high level.

This might be because you already have an item equiped that gives an resistance bonus to saves.

For example if you have a cloak of resistance +2 all your saves have an resistance bonus of +2.

If your nightshield gives +1 or +2 you wont notice any difference because it doesnt stack with your cloak.

If your nightshield gives +3 your cloak would be obsolete and so on...

There are stackable bonuses in the game but they have different names for example competence bonus to saves.

Is your character wearing an item that provides a Resistance bonus to saves? Nightshield provides the same type of bonus that wearing a +Resistance item would, so if the item bonus is the same or higher you won't see any effect on your character sheet.

Nightshield also appears to cap out at +3 bonus.

There are some other Divine spells that provide bonuses to saves and are described as Resistance bonuses, but actually are not: Protection from Evil, and Holy Aura. Holy Aura will show up on your character sheet, however Protection from Evil's +2 to bonus to saves against spells cast by Evil aligned enemies can only be observed in the Combat Log.

ah-ha. Yeah, I already have bonuses to my resistance from items. Interesting, I knew bonuses from items didn't stack, but I wasn't sure about bonuses from spells. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle. GI Joooeeee!!!
