Metamagic and stat/lvl damage

I have heard that Maximize and empower effect spells with variable numbers(blade barrier, WoF, Fireball)

Does this mean either or any metamagic feats effect spells like energy drain? I doubt they would but I wasn't sure.

A useful method for questions like these is to review the ddowiki and see which metamagics can be applied to any given spell. For instance, Ray of Exhaustion (http://ddowiki.com/page/Ray_of_Exhaustion) can be Enlarged, Extended, Heightened, Quickened, or have its materials Eschewed, but it cannot be Maximized or Empowered.
