I realize this topic has probably been beat to death and for that I apologize. I had what I consider a novel idea about how to approach this (well, I think it is novel but I confess to not scouring the forums to be sure).
Let me start by laying out a few assumptions I have based on what I have read, heard and imagined. First, the armor, weapons, helms, etc have very set looks that are determined when the item is created. This creation may be random or a set piece (named loot for example). Second, the color used is "baked" in. That means it can not be simply changed. It also implies that the look and color of an item is a constant that can be used over and over.
(For the following, I use armor but weapon, helm or shield can be substituted)
We all have had armor that we really liked the look of. The problem is that it is usually attached to a +1 set. The +5 mithral Full Plate of Greater False Life, on the other hand looks like the south end of a north bound dragon. My idea is simply swap the look of the armor.
The current crafting system can be employed to make this happen. You load both sets of armor in the shrine along with, say, a full dragonshard and then pull the lever. The end result would be a pretty +5 set of awesome and a +1 set a vendor wouldn't touch. :)
That sound you just heard was probably a Dev saying you can't do that! What I suggest is consuming the existing sets of armor and creating two new suits. This avoids having to add and remove attributes or any other mucking about with the existing armor. This of course also relies on the alter returning two items as opposed to one.
This would have two drawbacks. First, it could only be used on randomly generated armor. This limitation is due to the fact you have to create two new sets using an engine similar to the randomly generated armor. The second problem would be the fact that the new sets of armor would not be bound to you and therefore would lose any alchemical additions that require an item be bound. This might be solved by binding the new armor to character but that is another discussion.
Well, those are my thoughts. I haven't checked Lamania yet to see what is going on with the armor there so this all might be for naught. Let me know if there is something I overlooked. :)
Thanks,
