is the decay based upon toons or account?

i know and understand that ther eis other influence as well, however if toons are not logged on for say two weeks will that cause guild decay? or are the toons not logged into very often safe, due to the account being logged in?

Its based on your number of accounts (Active accounts - inactive accounts + recent departures).

It is also based on your guild level.

As for why guild renown decay? Well for one thing it keeps every guild from going the "Korthos Army" method and just hireing all the newbs they can, then kicking them when they have been more than a week inactive. This is very bad for the game as a newb that thinks they joined a community, only to be kicked out soon after would have a very bad experience and be more likely to quit in frustration, especially considering how little they have invested at that time. If it was up to me, I would make involuntary kickings count as 10 recent departures so that kicking someone will hurt your guild renown enough to make people think about it.

Guild decay is supposed to promote quality over quantity (at least past lvl 55 or so), and make sure that guild level is not just a function of the number of players x the amount of time the guild has existed.

As long as these noobs you speak of are made aware of the rules of the guild I see no reason to warehouse players in a guild because people are too lazy to log in & play. If they don't want the pressure of being apart of something that requires them to play at a certain time every month than don't join a guild, it's that simple. It makes absolutely no sense as to why DDO would want to control how a group wants to run their guild. Every guild is different, but to try & force everyone into one mold is ludicrous imo.

So, it's ok to mass recruit people that are new to the game as long as you tell them you'll give them the boot after a week. What about the guilds that don't mention that, or say there are any rules? We are talking about protecting people that may be experiencing the game for the first time.

yes it is. for a while our small guild was keeping up with the big ones. now they are gaining guild levels at about 2-3x the rate we are.

My own small guild (6 accounts) has suffered about 160 pts of guild decay per day. So the decay is on.

Plus a rather large and famous guild on argo keeps going from 57 to 58, then back to 57 every morning.
