View Full Version : When/Why do you squelch?

I see a lot of comments about squelch and some folks seem to have a pretty itchy trigger finger, especially given that we don't have exactly the largest player base in all of video gaming. I can't help but chuckle at the thought of a few people on these boards sitting there with only 3-4 people left on the server that aren't blacklisted/squelched.
I tend to be pretty restrictive with what will cause me to resort to the squelch command.
My top reasons in no particular order;
1. Music over voice chat: If you play music over your voice chat and it lasts longer than 30 seconds, you're done. A couple seconds of something funny or appropriate is fine, an extended tribute to your love of techno is not.
2. Rudeness: Mistakes, bad play etc all happen to the best of us but being rude or inconsiderate gets you on the list pretty quickly.
3. Refusal to heal someone for [fill in the blank]. There are times it's appropriate but not many, especially if it puts the run at risk. I had a healer blow shroud the other day because he was trying to spot heal to avoid healing someone that didn't run water. The best solution is to get through the raid/quest and then never run with that person again.
4. Random guild invites: Insta squelch
I've had a few other random squelches but not many. My squelch list is pretty short and way shorter than my friends list. For the most part I get along with everyone and have met some pretty good gaming friends running in pugs.

I am not usually quick to squelch. Usually if someone is being seriously ridiculous spamming the general chat, I'll /squelch add them. People that are rude, or people that are unwilling to be reasoned with.
I squelched someone while raid-partied in the Mabar event because she was running her mouth constantly over the mic in what should have been a relatively quiet collecting of Mabar bits. She wasn't rude or anything. Her heavy New York accent and her constant chatter was just really torquing me off. I had intended to /squelch remove her later, since she really wasn't doing any harm.

That's what I do to the "musicians". Most of the time they aren't worthy of a permasquelch so I remove them later.

1. You talk WAY TOO MUCH -- usually kids. I mean you have to talk ALOT and never shut-up before i do this.
2. You are an arrogant s.o.b. that treats others badly:p

Initially I was thinking that the first time I read one of Stoolcannons post. After careful reading, I am glad I haven't. Even when he has an opposite view, he has managed to articulate it in a way that most who disagree, can stomach reading. The reason I mention that is to at least point out one reason I DO NOT squelch people.
To keep in line with the OP, I will squelch when people are mean to others and seek to torment them while in a group.

The most annoying thing for me is when I put an lfm up saying clearly what quest, and someone joins and the first thing they say is "what we running? Where do I go? Shr plz!" that's an auto squelch from me, aswell as a good old boot

I haven't squelched anyone yet.
I do have the guild invite thing disabled in the UI options, so I never get those.

I only squelch when people spam honestly, but then... I don't PUG, so I don't have to deal with the same spectrum of issues.

I've only squelched two people across all my characters. The first was verbally abusive over voice chat and quite prone to profanity-laced tirades. The second was an explicitly racist person chatting over general. Other things irritate me, but normally I'm too lazy/relaxed to take it to the level of squelching.
I did once consider squelching a guildie and then unsquelching him later, though. There was something funky happening with his microphone, so the entire raid group was privy to he and his wife's dinner takeout orders, including a long debate over whether or not to order Wendy's. The guy's amusing, but it was starting to mess with my concentration. :P

I have only squelched one person in over a year of playing.
It was during a short-manned Kobold Assault on Elite. Everyone agreed to run it short-handed, and we went in without a healer. Apparently, while I was zoning in, he asked me to invite a cleric friend of his. By the time I zoned in, however, the request had scrolled out of view and I missed it.
He popped his wizard hireling, who immediately started slinging grease spells. Great. So I went off to camp a spawn point far away from him and his hireling.
A few minutes later (and after both he and his hireling died a couple of times) he starts saying that I've won the "tard of the year award." Yay, me!
I thought it was kinda funny. I opted not to answer him, but I still squelched him, completed, and dropped group.
So, basically, you really need to make an arse of yourself to get on my squelch list.

To be honest Im more inclined to squelch if im having a bad day or had a bad run in game or something. I guess depends on my tolerance levels at the time someone does something i find offensive or extremely irritating.

I believe I have squelched all of one person, and that was for sending me tells to insult me, bothering me to let him into the group even when i'm not leader, and he/she was about 10 levels lower, etc. It takes a lot to make me squelch.

Just about a year in. Haven't squelched anyone. Haven't had/felt the need to. Got pretty thick skin and it takes a lot to get my Irish up...
also, guilty of the music thing.. heh... tho it's usually Flogging Molly or the Pogues... Dropkick Murphy's etc.... on occasion a David Allen Coe song cause he's a riot... but normally it's only the chorus and only when we're all standing around waiting to fill or decide who's doing what to open the door on VoN... I'll try to avoid this in future... ;D

These. Well mostly 1, since I allow myself to get suckered into the verbal sparring with 2.

If it's Flogging Molly or the Murphy's I might start singing along and get squelched myself ;p

Man everyone is too "adult" around here. I'm 36, have a masters degree, a family and a successful career and I still find farts to be at the pinnacle of all things humorous. I'm continually surprised at how often people assume I'm going to be an idiot because of my silly forum name.
Give it time first so I can prove that I actually AM an idiot before you judge me. It won't take long.
I'm glad I didn't go with my first instinct and select L33tD&DH4x for my handle.

I'm going to roll a Khyber toon tonight and join every single group with a great big SHARPLZLLLZ! followed by asking what quest we are running over voice chat.
I'll probably be unable to get into a group ever again after hitting as few as 3 LFM's.

I actually do find farts to be quite funny, maybe not the pinnacle but funny enough. The reason why I said that, is pretty much down to my warped sense of humour, which is often, sarcastic and very dry, drier than the mechetran desert or what ever its called.I mean it actually rains there from time to time. My humour is prob like my farts dry lolz. No skiddies for me :p

When my daughter was first potty training I taught her to come out of the bathroom and announce in her loudest voice possible that she had just taken a huge dump.
My wife was not amused. Ok, she was pretty amused while not being amused. We are quite the goofball family.

If someone annoys me I squelch them, end of story. That doesn't mean they are perma - blacklisted or anything, I just don't want to hear them talk.
