View Full Version : Friendly Community Reminder: Don't take Patch Day off from work!

Just a friendly reminder/advice to the community to not take tomorrow off from work to play DDO. In fact, I also recommend not taking Thursday or Friday off, either, in case there is a hotfix or something catastrophic happens.

As evidenced in the past, patch day and the subsequent days tend to be extremely chaotic so you don't want to "waste" a vacation day just because the patch took longer than normal or a problem made the game unplayable. Just be patient and wait for the weekend. :D

Disclaimer: If your normal weekend is Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, disregard this message. :)

Edited to add: Every patch there is someone that takes the day off of work to play as soon as the patch is released and complains that the patch/server isn't up. This is just an anticipatory post to try to reduce the number of people that make that mistake.

Not that i'd ever take a day off just to play ddo. *whistles and tries to look innocent* But thanks for the public service announcement.

I better call my boss and ...well, you know...

let me guess, the phone call will be something like this:

"good news boss! my distant relative that was poorly sick has made a surprising recovery and i'm not needed to help them any more, i can come into work after all!"

Being the pessimist I am I also took a backup of my DDO folder in case the updater goes wrong and I need to reinstall :D

Something I have always wondered about when the worlds go down... does the raid timer stop and then resume or does it carry on counting down when the worlds are down.

And yeh I will be the first person back on Khyber when the world opens tomorrow.

I will be home from work and ready to play at 1530 EST, so that is as long as you may have to get it working. That is all :)

Some of us (not me!) play DDO AT work, so...

Actually you go home for lunch on patch day. When it goes live, you get like 30 minutes to play before it goes down again.

Also, when you leave for work in the morning, remember to try to log in. Since the server is down, it will try to log in repeatedly during the day and will update when the server comes back on line, so you are ready to play when you get home.

LOL! you had better.

besides can't you play at the office tomorrow and call it play testing, bug tracking or patch analysis, QA or something?

Manny!

I didn't realize you played ddo. I will be at work on Wednesday, I don't see a reason for this post. I've never taken off work to play a silly game. 6 months ago I did have a cold. 5 months ago my dog did die. 4 months ago I did strain my back. 3 months ago I did lose my other grandma (found her a week later). 2 months ago I did have gout. Last month I did have an emergency meeting with my son's principal.

So, I assure you, boss, I will be present and accounted for <sniffle>.

Sure...He'll have plenty fo time to play in between answering/locking posts by the whining forum community about why xyz is broke and between listening to the whining devs complain about how thier production environment is different from the pre-production environment and thus thier code doesn't work.

Office pool:

How many minutes after the end of scheduled downtime will the first thread about how the patch isnt on schedule appear?

Tie breaker question:

How many times will "prorated" be used by the fifth page?

Go outside on Wednesday. That will be all.

I'm glad I'm a Premium player and can wait for those eager VIPs to discover all of the new-update bugs and such so that they can get patched before I get access to things... :D

Seriously, though.. looking forward to this!

My boss used to play, but luckily for me he never read the forums.

Thank goodness for star trek online to distract him from DDO.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking...

Thank you for choosing to play DDO. Please watch the attendant as I read the following pre-update safety instructions.

Attendant frantically rummages through a mailbox
http://www.am800cklw.com/am800_upload_files/image/Arms/Too_Much_Mail.jpeg

Please empty your mailboxes of valued items as items left in your mailbox might inexplicably vanish.

Attendant opens a backpack and begins to extract and carry its contents

Please remove all your belongings from the Shared Bank, especially bags, and place them into inventory.

Attendant holds up the halt signal

Please avoid DDO for 2-3 days after the update so things can stabilize.

on patch days i always never log on untill about an hour after server up time, from experience they nearly always get extended and server crashes are bound to happen :D

More like, "Good news boss! My distant relative made a surprising recovery so I can come into work tomorrow after all! But it looks like my OTHER distant relative is suffering from a delayed case of flu, which will probably be really serious by Monday..."

You may express appreciation with in-game donations and/or valid DDO game card codes :D

I don't even PLAY on patch day, let alone take a day off...

I'll be playing some Civ V or Starcraft II tomorrow night... I'll check the boards once or twice, but I probably won't log in my characters until Thursday and all the BIG problems are already discovered.

I don't patch my servers the same day a service pack comes out either.

... based on past experience, there won't be any problems with the update. All of you DOOM-Mongers need to relax and take the day off and play when the game comes back up at 10am

There's actually no benefit for me to stay home; my schedule is so early that I'll get home right after the third "We're sorry, but the servers will remain down for another hour" pops up. After my shower, I should be able to update.
