View Full Version : Most underrated U7 changes!

Of course we are all excited about Half-orcs, and the changes to the AH, but what do you guys think is being overlooked or not given enough attention, from the players?
My three:
3. Low level raid - while part of me cringes at the idea of LOW-LEVEL-RAID-PuGing, hopefully we will have some NEWBS (not to be confused with noobs) have a much better idea of what to do on their first TS run.
2. Hirelings timers will stop in town - One word....convenient
1. VIP's will be able to automatically open quests on elite!!!!!!!!! - Holy cow yes! I'm not a VIP (just premium) and even f2p players will get to reap the benefits from this, how much easier chains just became to grind....sweetness!
*Now hopefully I am not lying about anything here but I'm like 89% sure the update notes I read included the above mentioned changes*
So, What's your top three OVERLOOKED changes, that have been lost in the new race hype?

3) New people will get slaughtered in that raid and since all the items are BTA vets will just farm it with 20s so noone will be there to teach the new people...design fail
2) Hirelings are cheap as dirt get a folder put 20 in there
1) Meh only reason to do elite when noone in the group has done hard is for favor. Most people have already done all low level stuff on their main favor toon

3) Sorcs don't need have to waves anymore
2) There will be more light monks in TOD to give the buff

A lot of changes are not underrated. We just don't see why we have to discuss/dispute them.
My favourite changes are bug fixes and DDO Store hearts and such dropping in loot (so they say).

Depending on how quickly/efficiently they are running elites, you do get the most xp from running elites first, then getting your hard and norm bonuses, though it might be a negligible difference.

technically you would be better off doing normal and not hitting hard til right before you would take an xp hit and the same for elite and holding back a level. As there is more than enough low level content and very little high level content. Example last thing you want to do is burn up your GH elites before you do normal as you could have saved those elites until you would be taking big hits on normal.
Max xp and max xp where you need it are NOT the same thing.

Many TRs running through the game again. This gives them something new and (hopefully) interesting to do, and undoubtedly at least some of them will end up with newbie PUGs.
Vets roll up new alts as well.
DB fail. Nice try though.

Uh, YEAH! That means no more double runs through **** content for favor. No more LFMs from VIPs for openers for favor runs. No more waiting. No more ********. That may not be special for you, but it's pretty worthwhile.

According to the Release Notes for Update 7 (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Release_Notes_Update_7_Official), this change has not made it live. The word "elite" only appears in that page 5 times:
A Small Problem
The elite/epic end fight is now slightly more forgiving.
Enter the Kobold
Some of the living spells will only appear on hard and elite settings.
The end fight will now be easier on normal and slightly easier on hard. Elite mode has not changed.
Inspired Quarter
Drop rates for items have been increased in the Inspired Quarter on Hard and Elite.
Tower of Despair
Suulomades has been shamed into bringing his treasure into hard and elite modes of Tower of Despair. Horoth had to really yank the chain of command. There was much whimpering.
The word "VIP" only appears twice:
New Playable Races
Introducing the half-orc and half-elf, DDO's newest playable races! These races will be free for VIPs and available in the DDO Store for everyone else!
New Raid & Updated Adventure Pack!
The Devil Assault adventure pack has been updated and enhanced! Enjoy more challenge, more content, and of course... more devils! Available in the DDO Store, and free for VIPs!

Hi everyone-
There are lots more player-requested polish items and bug fixes in there too! We have more PREs updates for Bards, Wizard and Monks. Our VIP plan is also better than ever with the addition of the new races, content and a new perk that lets VIPs get access to elite difficulty in all quests without needing to play on Hard first. And, we have dealt another mighty blow to the lag-monster! And there is a lot more I don’t have space for here. Check out the release notes (http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Release_Notes_Update_7_Official)to see even more!
the elite changes is mentioned here - http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=280916

Wow... just wow... that is a pretty ignorant statement thinking that only "vets" are capable of learning and/or teaching.
I'm not saying that its going to be easy or that people wont need to adapt but to say that its a design fail is unfounded. Just because you wont do the quest with low level toons or feel that you are incapable of succeeding without twinked gear does not mean the whole community falls into that same boat.
I see this raid as a chance for the new players to get their feet wet and start coming up with their own strategies. In the higher end raids the main cookie cutter strategies are already in place and getting people to think outside the box is hard enough, let alone once they have gotten it ingrained to follow the successful masses. Usually the known strategies are used because they are successful and usually quick. There is nothing wrong with them but to assume that there is only 1 way of doing something is incorrect.

I really like the change to elite opening. I know that people talk about TR's needing all the xp they can bank but that's more of an issue once you get to level 10+. At low levels there's SO much content right now and the xp curve changes are so back-weighted that I could see many quests being done as elite only. I'd certainly do the first 3 in Korthos on elite only with the possible exception of storehouse (which can be zerged fast enough to be worth running multiple times). Cannith Crystal simply isn't worth the time/xp commitment. And it's not the only quest not worth it. It will be very nice to be able to run many quests once and call it done.

if you are talking xp/min, then yes, you are probably right (since normal runs should take less time than elite runs)...
But if you are talking pure max xp possible, then you are wrong. The very best option for max xp is running elite till it is at extreme repition and then normal/hard/casual (in any order for the last 3). You still get the full xp for completing (plus bonus) when it is the first time on each difficulty.
Also, don't forget that all optionals get thier own xp repetition counters (that is only incremented when they are completed) and is a muliplier based on base XP for the quest (not based on how much you are getting after repetition penalties) and as a result, those quests with high XP optionals (some are >= 40% of base XP), might even be useful to keep running on elite after you don't get xp for the quest just to complete the optionals. This is rare but since you might not have to complete the quest to get the optional, it reduces your run time in the quest for those times you are only lookin for optionals.

What he is talking about in this case is as a TR the most efficient way to run is banking XP and doing levels of quests 1 lower than your character level as as to not take an overleveled xp hit.
Thus take quest <blah>. Its level; X on normal, (X+1) on hard, (X+2) on elite. Thus you run it on normal 4-5 times when you are only 1 level above it saving your first time hard and elite for when you level up so those increases are now only 1 level lower than you. If you ran it first on elite for the 4-5 runs (still staying 1 level over the now increased level of the quest) you would be taking a -20% hit on the normal run and -10% on the hard run.
The best uses of elite first is on quests that you dont want to run twice just for the favor; hard -> elite, or if everyone is on their characters first Raid run and you want elite for the increased drop without needed to do hard first (Stormreaver is the big one that comes to mind).

I'm a big fan of the work with the Recall/Finish Out button that they did. Typically if I'm in a wilderness area and I want to recall, I have to toggle the UI from transparent to solid in order to get at the Recall button. Then, I have to toggle back before the recall finishes, if I remember to.
Now, with Update 7, the Recall button is there even if you've tranparentified the objectives. Very cool! And I'm not sure I even read that change on the update notes. :)

One great change for newer rogues is the "eye beam" to the trap box location after a search. Doesn't matter much to vets who've memorized every trap location in the game, but for new players it can be frustrating to do a search for a trap box and miss the location because it's behind a door, pillar or around a corner and they don't see the "waves" from it. It's frustrating to have to wander around looking for a trap that may just be in the next room.

Now, some 4 1/2 years later it is fixed.
wow. I played for the first time in a few weeks and had to tell myself I did not have to unlock/lock bars to prevent one part of this issue.
and to not have the bars move at all...wow.

almost makes me want to level now..
Doing a quest just once on elite, and not repeating any, gets you a double TR to level very very fast. And tons of favor.
The biggest downside to doing it the elite only way was that you had to find people to open elite..now you can just run it. This will make leveling uber fast and fun for any TR
Well, any TR that is smart enough to do it that way..
edit:
What he is talking about in this case is as a TR the most efficient way to run is banking XP and doing levels of quests 1 lower than your character level as as to not take an overleveled xp hit.
Thus take quest <blah>. Its level; X on normal, (X+1) on hard, (X+2) on elite. I gotta disagree with you. If you like repeating things ad naseum, yea, then that way is for you. Until you try to just blow through all quests, level by level, on elite only, and only run once, you won't understand how insane it is.
There is no way, even with a double TR to run out of content for xp that way...and never get bored too. By the time you are 10th level, you will still be doing 7th level quests.
And holding back on levels...I never could understand that. My higher level toon will kill things faster than one two levels lower.
go the all elite, all quests, once style...it is great for small groups also..absolute blast. And you never get tired of the content.
(skip stealthy repo though)

Design win... They can learn it for themselves instead of being carried by vets.
Meh only reason to do elite when noone in the group has done hard is for favor. Most people have already done all low level stuff on their main favor toon
Pain to bring in your main favor character every time, and even the main favor character doesn't help you on chain quests. Opening on elite is a HUGE perk for VIP.

One of my absolute favorite things in U7 is the fantastic voice work in The Chronoscope. The voiceovers weren't up on Lammania, so I heard it for the first time last night and was blown away. I like the DM voice just fine, but Turbine has added additional voices for various characters and NPCs in there and it's just great. Ever since Korthos I've been wanting to hear more character voice-work while questing and I hope The Chronoscope points to what we'll be seeing in the future. Really great stuff.

I agree, I'd even take it a step further... spending the money and getting all the important quest text in the game done with voice talent, would eliminate that "Oh **** I can't read all this everyones already inside <click spare me the details>" feeling when you're doing a quest for the first time and want to know whats going on but feel way too rushed to read anything.
Add an option check box to turn the quest text voice overs off (for those that would invariably object to it) and boom no more quests where I've done it 4 or 5 times before I read the actual text with a slow group while waiting for someone :) "oh so that's why that happens" or "Hmmm so I wonder W.T.F. there's a dragon in this bank vault anyway...
IMO this rushed feeling is turning off a lot of new players... it's why you see LFM's with "team work, no rushing" every once in a while... You know for every player that will put that in an LFM there's 20 more who feel the same but lose interest, never find that group, or solo themselves into disinterest...
The new raid is a great example of where this would help... because once past the intro there's plenty of text to understand whats going on.... but no one wants to read it, and "at level" the PUG's are pure unadulterated TRAIN WRECKS.

Misery's Peak--Removed a line in the ice.
lol, +1 Rep for you!
I'm happy that they fixed the ddo store purchased bank slots. I almost purchased the extra character/shared slots but read that they were broken when TRing (3rd life here). I will buy them now. Especially nice to be able to move low level junk more efficiently between my main and my mules.

now to add something new, and not so visible to everyone:
1. Repeaters not missing shots anymore - really made my repeater rogue a whole lot more effective cause i really get my 3 shots now
2. Tier enhancements made cheaper - you don't have to spend 12 AP's on the DD and OL enhancements just to get mech 1, you simply spend 6 nd get the same benefit for every point, plus elven rogues can't split search/spot enhancements between racial and class anymore making them more effective than other rogues
also the elven arcane fluidity is now much more worth the APs, really love that on my wiz/rog!
3.white line from char to trap box - man, i really hated searching for a trap you just 'found' :(!
4. wizard spell like abilities - you get these always-use spells like haste much cheaper now ,you only have to dedicate your wiz to a certain school, but that's effective at least
And not to forget the cool new sounds for some animations - i now really hear my repeater shoot and reload, and its also a good thing they fixe dthe lenght of the bard songs to match the animations

Well, actually the list is longer, but you can probably imagine how it looks, so I guess I can spare you the details.

1. More relics dropping in Gianthold! I was puzzled when I ran Madstone and the end chest drop 3 relics. Then the same thing happened in the next run. Thank you thank you! The GH relic grind is my biggest dislike of this game, so great props on increasing the drops!
2. Sharper UI and overall graphic effects.
3. Cheaper enhancements.I was respeccing my Spellsinger bard when the AP cost for certain enhancements was different than I remembered. :)
Thanks devs!

I can give you one:
When playing my Rogue and searching for the trap box, occasionally (too often for my liking but not always) I would not get the visual cue around the box itself and thus could not find it. Sometimes other players got the cue and other times they did not either.
Now when you search and find the trap, a very thin white line points to the box location. I have had the visual cue around the box fail to happen on a successful search but the line pointed right to the box and I was able to disarm it. Nice touch, Turbine.

Ok, I am adding one I just had happen
The AI for hires has been improved at least a little, and they will now auto-rez if dead when they are near a shrine!
Devs, live event was disappointing after the test run, but this is definitely a +1 to you

I'm still finding little perks, but my favorite three:
1. hireling tweaks.
2. inventory facelift (I'd put the AH search, but it's not really overlooked)
3. and the most important one- clickies that stay put
I know the topic was overlooked changes, and this stuff is considered the icing on the cake, but they're changes that affect everyone- f2p, VIP, newbies, vets, characters of all levels. These are the minor upgrades that really count. Nobody wants the cake without icing anyway, right?
Thanks, devs.

3. VIPs can unlock elite.
2. VIPs can unlock elite.
1. VIPs can unlock elite.
For those times I can manage to solo elite and don't want to grind all the way through twice or wait for a group. This change alone has saved me loads of time already. Lots of quests I only do once per toon for favor. And I prefer to do just about everything on elite anyway for the challenge. I never have to ask "can we unlock elite" ever again.
Thank you, Turbine.

Warchanter bard hirelings rented for plat.
Yeah my melee characters love them pocket buffs: + to hit, + damage, 5 dr, perma haste, and the occasional heal.

1) Gone is the strip search bug! I absolutely hated having to wait for sp/hp/abilities to reset once logging on. Very annoying and very glad it's gone.
2) Being able to open quests on elite. Makes favor running so much easier now. Love it!
3) Hireling improvements. Warchanter bards FTW!
Lots of great things in this update, but those are my top 3 overlooked changes.
