Now that I have proper use of my full mental faculty, it's time to do this right. This is a revision of the MOD 7 build made shortly after the change to TWF feats on Monks.

This thing is not grind intensive, but is very hard to kill, predominantly because you can pop a cure potion and said potion hits pretty hard for some heavy recovery ability. Throw some Heal Amplification items on it(each differing % stacks multiplicatively) for even more tenacity. My initial plan for this guy was a set of Dragontouched Vestements with 10% 20% and 30% heal amplification. Now, he's slated for something slightly different, but it's still up in the air. The object is to get his Heal Amp and DPS as high as possible with no regard whatsoever to armor class or saves. Those just happen to be decent on their own(especially with an item like Kardin's Eye or Boots of the Innocent, or better yet Resistance +5 on his Dragontouched).

Got a +3 DEX tome and want a slightly higher base WIS? Drop the initial DEX to 15. You need a base of 18(base + tome only) for Grandmaster Wind(full Haste effect in Boots of Anchoring and Antimagic Fields).

Items to farm for with this build:
Shinato set(Necklace and Ring - Holy Burst)
(Optional, add any other set you like. The Occult Slayer set is also pretty nice)Frenzied Berzerker set(Belt and Ring - Shocking Burst)
Yugoloth pots(150 Yugoloth favor)
Epic Claw of Vulkoor set (http://ddowiki.com/page/The_Red_Fens_Epic_Items)(Bracer and Gloves) - use Levik's Bracers and Spectral Gloves until you get these upgraded
Dust Guard Cloak(Material Dominion) or Lightning Guard Cloak(or whatever else you want in the Cloak slot)
Boots of Anchoring
Madstone Boots
Dragontouched Vestements(Heal Amp 10% and 20%, then whatever Sovereign Rune you want on there. If Vulkoor's Might becomes available, grab it)
Bloodstone(Epic if possible)
GS Mineral II Helm(HP, Toughness, Prot 5 for no reason) - for your TR, use a Guard helm once you get to level 20, as 100% Fort comes on the Epic Bracers of the Claw
+5 Anarchic Burst Handwraps of Greater Evil Outsider Bane

Reason for Grandmaster Wind Stance: This is the highest attack rate a monk can attain in all 4 stances available. It is better to get 10% more hits in than to do 1-3% more damage. Furthermore, in Grandmaster Wind stance, Haste is a permanent effect, and the spell grants no additional attack speed whatsoever. This means you can wear the Boots of Anchoring full time and never lose DPS.

Addendum much later: I'm not sure what it is I am missing in the character planner, as the live build doesn't have that many sets of Toughness. Of course, the newer player will definitely want that much HP, so deviations should be kept to a minimum unless you are twinking the hell out of this build(in which case you may want to consider pushing the Greater Dragonmark of Finding into this build by evicting the extra Toughness feats).

This is the Live build, recommended only for metagamers due to the need for the +3 tome before cap. I LR'd the original to fix some feats and ended up changing the base stats.

TR1 - The Character Planner doesn't have Shintao in it, so the enhancements will get a bit interesting. I mashed in most of the crucial ones, with a few fillers. The feats should work fine though. I left the +3 STR and CON tomes and Enhancement bonuses off this one.

TR 2 Stays human, because Half Orcs are too damned squishy to TR.

Same game: Maxed STR, 16 dex and con, and the rest is rinse and repeat. TR 3x Monk and you'll have +3 damage to every swing you take. This benefits the Grandmaster Wind Monk and the Tempest III Ranger the most, and the Two Handed Fighter the least. This is also true for the Epic Claw of Vulkoor and Shintao sets. Consider this when assigning priority to loot. A Heavy Pick Frenzied Barbarian with Warforged or Half Orc Power Attack III is also a good candidate for these two sets, due to the very high critical multiplier.

An AC build? A Shintao AC build...?

ok.

Whatever.

Let's take a crack at this.

This build aims for Epic level AC gear. Namely the Epic Jidz-Tetka and the Epic Siren set(at which time the Nyoko ring becomes obsolete for all but Melee Attacks, and AC builds are not made to attack). As for losing the Greater False Life, just move it to the Epic Dusk Heart in the Trinket slot, attaining Superior False Life instead.

The odd numbers are balanced by high value Tomes, +7 stat items(Epic Only) and Exceptional stat bonuses.

Both sets are mentioned in the DDO Wiki. Google is your friend.

As with nearly every AC build in the game, this build ignores a need for DPS. I will NEVER make this character.

I am still amazed that this build or the general deviation of this build is a DDO Staple.

I made it haphazardly shortly after Monks came out and TWF started mattering to the Monk in general. Everyone was so ceoncerned with Armor Class balanced with DPS... so I said "screw it" because as a casual gamer I wasn't going to get caught up in the endless grind.

It's simple, effective, and now one of the most respected builds for Monks everywhere.

It even has a Half Orc variation that uses WIS as a dump stat, while still relying on a very high(or maxed) Strength score balanced out by Healing Amplification.

A metagamer with more time than common sense named Gruuumsh on Argonnessen decided to put together a nice gear set for the build, relying on the basic guidelines I had formulated one day and some good old fashioned hem-hawwing with gear specialists.

Base Build: TR1-2 Half Orc with maxed STR and just barely enough DEX for Wind 4(With a +3 tome) and the rest in CON
Epic Claw of Vulkoor set
Epic Envenomed Cloak
Epic Corrosive Boots
Epic Helm of Frost(solely for the set bonus)
Epic Bloodstone(with Greater False Life on it)
Dragontouched Vestements with 10% and 20% Healing Amplification and +20% Threat generation
(He went for the Epic Siren's set from Red Fens, I disagree with that mentality and would rather have a few ToD sets)
Shintao Set with Holy Burst or Shocking Burst
Frenzied Berserker set with either Holy Burst or Shocking Burst
"HotSwap Rings" later on with Acid Burst and the like for situations in Epic where something is immune to the Shock or Holy damage.

I would still rely on a Cloak for my Shroud HP slot and keep my mind open about maybe one day TRing into a Warforged for the Quarforged Docent of Battle as my HP item, to loosen the gear up a bit and permit me options like Scourge Choker + Claw set + Frenzied set + Guard helmet(Lightning II Good and Lightning Guard) and Cloak(Dust Guard Mat Escalation for HP) + Madstone Boots. If ever the Sora Kell set becomes Epic, I would very much like to see it become a viable gear option, as the slots would mess with the assignments quite a bit. Of course, it would need to be at the very least +4 to hit and +4 to damage(set bonus: 3 items) to validate its benefit to the player that took the time to get all 3 pieces made Epic... but that's a discussion for another forum. The basic point of all of the above is this: The build is the same, the gear is fluid and can change at a moment's notice. Have fun gearing your build out!

The goal with Handwraps is generally for the Epic situation: +5 Greater Bane with at least 1d6 of additional damage(Example: Acid, Shock, Frost, Flaming, Force, Anarchic, Axiomatic, Holy... the best of all of these by far is Vicious due to the ridiculous healing factor of the build and the fact that Vicious hurts everything).

If you want Completionist and a Past Life fit into the same build with Power Attack and Shintao, you're probably going to have to go Human unless you can live without something like Improved Critical: Bludgeon or Toughness(not recommended). With Versatility 4, Human gets better burst DPS than a Half Orc(for situations like Nythirios, Arraetrikos, Horoth and Suulomades, with prevalence to Nythirios for the necessity of maximizing DPS). Another benefit of Human is the additional Healing Amplification Line that fits nicely with the additional Racial Toughness and Adaptability: Constitution that Humans can obtain.

The idea behind having Cleave is this: Equip Stunning +10 handwraps or a pair of Vorpal Kamas while surrounded. Now, Cleave and hope for the best. The other Shintao requisite feats, with the exception of Combat Expertise(the requirements for which kick your build in the nuts), are essentially wasted space. Honestly, the build can live without Cleave, but the developers wanted to choke Monks a bit with the requirements up front. I hope it gets changed later, as with a TR I would prefer more than one usable feat slot for past life feats without starting to cripple the build entirely.

It's old. It's solid. It's fun to play. I paved the road on Argo. Enjoy your Monk!

One of the Sora Kell items is a ring, so in general that rules it out for monks.
