View Full Version : Dimension Door - What do you use it for?

Could anyone who memorizes and uses this spell on a regular basis please let me know what they use it for? I'm supposed to be the guy who knows the spells and I'm kind of scratching my head on this one.
My highest level character is a level 10 wizard and the completely new group I run with is just now starting to do mid-level quests.
8 Paladin (almost 9), 8 Barbarian (almost 9) and 10 wizard. And a lazy halfling 6th level rogue/trapmaster.
Any quest suggestions that dimension door would be worthwhile to have memorized?

Anytime you want to get back to the start of the dungeon. If you have a dungeon where you split up at the beginning, you do one path, DD, next path, DD, last path, finish, DD, leave dungeon without waiting for the recall timer. DD is most commonly used to avoid running. You could cast a dimension door to prevent a wipe, when your party doesn't look like it can handle an encounter perhaps...
You'll love dimension door when you get to the chamber of raiyum in the sands of menechtarun. That quest is the arcane's little xp treasury.

anything that relies on running from one end of a large place to the other end, passing back through an area that is close to the entrance :)

A good shortcut for quests with large dungeons and requires going back and forth. Quests like Relic of a Sovereign Past (where you go through long tunnels to activate lever/get key, then go back all the way and take another tunnel) and Tomb of the Blighted (square like dungeon, after finishing east/west, easier to D door back to holy fountain than walk all the way back). In higher level quests like those in Amrath, where the shrine is located at the entrance and again, criss-crossing dungeons D Door can be very useful.
Or, another use when your party took on more than it can handle and a wipe seems imminent. A quick D door is great to regroup/gather the soul stones/and head to shrine without mobs following you. ;)

there are maybe 5 quests where DDoor is truely a handy spell to have. The rest of the time, its just a shortcut for the lazy.
If you are a Bard you probobly should have it because the other otptions are not that exciting. No reason not to carry it on a Wiz either. Plenty of spell slots. On a sorc? Not too important. I carry scrolls around on my sorc for emergencies.

I love Dimension Door.
It saves time and makes some quests much easier.
Must have for all arcanes.

Another DDoor trick, for when you get to the level 15 or so range:
If you're running the quests in the Vale of Twilight (a wilderness area), the town in that area is called Meridia. The only way to get to it is by running through the Vale or teleporting, as it's not connected to Stormreach in any other way. If, after completing a quest, you want to return to Meridia, recalling back to the vale, then recalling again won't work. You'll instead end up in the Twelve Enclave, and have to run a significant distance to get to Meridia. If you instead DDoor back to the entrance, walk out to the Vale, then recall, you'll end up in Meridia. It only works if you came from Meridia when you ran to the quest, though.
Of course, a Greater Teleport works too.

Or you can place a dimension door exactly covering one of the 3 d-door in Abbott raid...

The most important thing in DDoor:
It dissapears after cster uses it.

Indeed. In a recent group I was in, a caster almost stranded half the party in Rainbow doing that, and he had the light. I think he had recently come back and didn't know the U5 change. Fortunately, there was a Bard with them w/ DDoor.

This is mostly covered above. The biggest reason for me to have ddoor is for solving the green room puzzle in the Titan raid and in general to save time in other quests/raids.

It can also be useful in The Pit
or Ghosts of Perdition (to get to the shrine again).

FYI, if you ask the right vets, you may be able to pick up some DDoor scrolls so that you don't have to mem it.
I still have several hundred, but they're staying in the bank for my own use. I'm sure there's a few out there who still have some for sale.

I'm down to my last 100....
I have ddoor on my sorc. Why? I like it. Easier to get to shrines at the beginning of quests if you skip them. Good way to get out of a sticky situation if things are going badly.

This. That said, I use it all the time. The frequency with which I run quests where it's really very useful (ADQ1, VoN5, Titan preraid) is enough that I keep it mem'd. About 25% of other quests I end up using it 'cause I have it, and it's convenient.
It can certainly also be an excellent emergency escape tool, although it's been a long time since I've used it for that (not because I'm awesome and my groups never wipe, but because I TR'd and am not yet back to challenging content).
Cheers,
Kernal

Ghost of Perdition is one of the hectic places where a party wipe is likely to happen. If you see it coming on, throw a dd and grab stones.
Wizard King (Chamber of Rayuim) has 2 shrines in the first room. DD back to use shrine start down new path.
Rainbow in the Dark, again dd back and go down new path.
There are more than a handful of quest where a dd comes in handy and no, you can't buy from a scroll vendor. Memorize when you get the chance.
