I am driven to excel in everything I do. I don't know what fun means. When people kill themselves doing things I consider ill-advised in a computer game, I get annoyed. Recently a whole party (other than me) decided to see how high they could get thrown if they all blew up in Yaaryar's ship. I should be thinking "how fun is that" but instead I'm thinking "*!&#( that was a waste of time.."
It probably stems from a feeling of insecurity. I mean why shouldn't you run through a trap and die if that's what you want? it's a computer game. I can imagine in a real lfe situation you don't want people to do that because people only have one life, and friends and family, people who care about them, and you don't want their lives endangered unnecessarily.
But this is a game. All you're "blowing up" is a bunch of pixels. You don't "die". No one "dies". And yet I get mad when a WF barb blows us all up because he tried to disable a trap despite the presence of a high-level rogue.
Recently I got annoyed because someone tried to share a quest in the middle of a battle.
I'm getting mad because people don't follow the unwritten rules and regulations in a game that has no rules and regulations.
I tried making some characters whose sole purpose was to be gimpy and die a lot, but I found out that I couldn't. I totally hate losing and being weak and dying a lot.

generally the #1 rule of thumb should be:
respect the fun of others. if their fun differs from yours, just leave em alone.

It takes guts to say what you did. +1 to you.
That said, I really think you need to attempt to settle down a bit.
But this is a game. All you're "blowing up" is a bunch of pixels. You don't "die". No one "dies". And yet I get mad when a WF barb blows us all up because he tried to disable a trap despite the presence of a high-level rogue.
Remember that everyone has fun in different ways. You have said this, but I am unsure if you *really* understand that. That is not an attack, I mean it in the way of verification of what you have stated. I might find it amusing to see how far I can fly when te ship blows up (I should try that, sounds fun :) ) but if that is causing problems with the rest of the group then it is something that should be done at another time.
I think the main thing here is: Have fun with the game, in whatever way you have fun. If you enjoy making the most uber build you can find on the forum and grinding out all the end game gear to place your character at the pinnacle of the characters on your server then go for it. FInd other players are share the same concept of fun that you do. You will find that many people share enough of your outlook that you will have plenty of people to play with.
I also suggest that you attempt to minimize your contact with people who do not share your views of fun. You can not, and should not, avoid them entirely. There really are many people that are also "driven to excell" in DDO that occasionally like to let loose and do something stupid just for the fun of it. I have a feeling that after you play for a while and have a character that fulfills most of what you want the game to provide, you will find some enjoyment in making a G.I.M.P. style toon and relaxing in your utter un-awesomeness. It takes a while to get to that point for some people, but that is OK.
Just enjoy the game and try not to get frustrated with people that are having fun in a way different from you.
You seem to have a good grasp of the way your fun differs from others, and that is a good start.

I should but I don't know how.
Remember that everyone has fun in different ways. You have said this, but I am unsure if you *really* understand that.
I don't understand the concept of "fun" or how it can be "fun" to blow yourself up. Doing a quest is not really fun, I suppose it's like climbing a mountain. People climb mountains because they're there. It's just there to be climbed, otherwise what's a mountain for, right? this game is here to be played, so I'm playing it. a higher level is something to aim for, something to look forward to. No one has to climb a mountain, or climbs a mountain saying "haha, this is fun" but they do it anyway.
I don't play clerics precisely because of that, I damned near had an ulcer chasing five suicidal people across a map (and that happens often.) Also I feel responsible when people kill their characters. I was in a party with someone who was playing a cleric, and people kept killing their characters and asking for raises. This happened until he ran out of SP, and then I got annoyed and finished it solo.
I might find it amusing to see how far I can fly when te ship blows up (I should try that, sounds fun :) ) but if that is causing problems with the rest of the group then it is something that should be done at another time.
That's not the problem, the problem is if the rest of the group decides to blow themselves up so you're the only one left.
There really are many people that are also "driven to excell" in DDO that occasionally like to let loose and do something stupid just for the fun of it.
There's that word "fun" again. Playing should be fun but it's not really. Doing something "stupid" should be fun but it's just annoying to me. At this point someone's probably going to think "why do you even play this game then?" -- it's because this game is there to be played, the same way mountains are there to be climbed.
Doing a quest, to me, is like climbing a mountain. Six people are roped together, and climb the mountain together. Occassionally one of them might not make it, but it's okay, we still continue. It's when a five people decide to jump off the mountain because its fun to see how far they drop. Maybe you don't die but it's a pain having to start again at the bottom.
I have a feeling that after you play for a while and have a character that fulfills most of what you want the game to provide, you will find some enjoyment in making a G.I.M.P. style toon and relaxing in your utter un-awesomeness.
I tried but I just got annoyed at myself.
Then "Korthos Army" is not the guild for you. I would try looking for a new guild.
Now there's a group of people that know how to have fun.

That'd be like climbing a mountain alone. And really no one climbs a mountain alone. Can't figure out why but no one does that.
And hey I see posts disappearing, are they being deleted? if so, how do you do that?

You Go to the Mountain.
you get in a Plane and jump out of it hoping that little backpack does what its suppsoed to do.
You Trust that that Bungee cord is exactly the right length.

Sounds like a set of issues that go wayyy beyond DDO and the other people playing here. Have you considered therapy or anger management classes?
It sounds like you'd be better off with a leisure activity in the real world which you can get actively involved in. A lot of your frustration appears to stem from the fact that you can only interact with this game via a keyboard and mouse and are unable to exert your will in a more direct way.
Finally, as a matter of fact, many people DO climb mountains, and explore wilderness areas and many many other physically challanging activities alone. In fact I personally love to climb large hills and even mountains alone. Its more of a challange to me to do it alone and I value not only the view but also the silence when I get to the top. Its a nice way to get away from this overcrowded,non-stop, 24/7, go-go-go world we live in.
SO, my advice (for what its worth) is to switch off your PC every once in a while and go out there and see the world. Computer games will still be here when you get back, you won't miss anything important while you are away but you might find a bit more inner peace.

Yes, I know it is a food (I actually detest the stuff), but try that word on your Arabic or Persian speaking friends and see what they think it means.

There is an applicable C word for it, but I can't imagine it with any sort of the sauces you mentioned!

I can relate to the OP in this respect. Hence I am retraining to become a prison guard so I can exert my will on the world in a more direct way. This would have no appreciable in DDO however (even as a VIP) so I suggest the OP begin some type of 'cyberstalking' to apply pressure to other players. That way everyones happy.

Retraining as a Terrorist would be a better option. Then you could change world history too and become remembered forever!!!!
PS, When I say "Terrorist" I mean "Freedom Fighter", or is it visa vera?

How do you know the game is here to be played? Perhaps the true purpose of the game is to allow some unnamed group of people watch us run our virtual rats through a maze, and laugh because they're not even real rats, nor is it a real maze, and there is no real cheese at the end. ;)
Also, mountains affect climate, break up air currents, are a source of freshwater, create natural borders, prevent erosion, and were a nuisance to Hannibal. Just for future reference.

This is indeed a game and there are many different aspects to excel at. There are some who excel at getting quests done as quick and clean as possible. There are those who excel at griefing guildies. There are those who excel at finding the highest perches in Stormreach and environs. There are even folks who excel at dying. Finding out how high one can get blown but Yar-Yar's ship exploding is yet another aspect of finding out just what your character can do and survive. As it turns out... they can't survive and at least now they know and so does the OP.
