View Full Version : what's teh point?

Maybe someone can help me out here. I've been playing DDO for a few years now on the EU servers and since moving over the pond have noticed a far wider use of the word 'teh'. The only context I can find is the word 'the'.. now, here's what I don't understand. Why not just type 'the' it has the same amount of letters and syllables, they are even the same letters just swapped around, so why not just use the word that is actually a word as opposed a non-word? Why would someone want to sound like Timmeh from South Park? Shortenings like 'thru' I understand, I don't use it myself but obviously some people value the time they save by missing off 3 letters when they type it. Acronyms I understand such as LOL or OMW or BRB or even IOOSPSSRALALHMWYHNAC. (I'm out of spell points so stop running around like a loon hitting mobs when you have no Armour Class). But 'teh'... just doesn't make anysense to me. Anyone care to enlighten me?

"teh" is meant to simulate a typo but now people just use it when they want to be silly.

It's kind of an internet (or, internets) meme. Much like when someone goes nuts with the Shift+1 for exclamation markes. It's a lot more work to alternate the shift key back and forth, and finish with the spelling out of the word one, but people still do it.
Example:
Check out my new fighter build - it is teh roxxorz!!!1!1one
It's not intended as a shorthand of any kind. It's more of a sort of internet cultural thing.
FWIW, when spoken, "teh" is pronounced exactly like it is written.

In my case its always a typo but I allow others to translate internally instead of my having to backspace and edit myself.

I believe it started as a typo in early MMO's before voice. Trying to type instructions fast lead to a lot of typos and The turned into Teh. After several years of MMO's it became accepted gamer slang.

As everyone said it's a really common typo that has long since turned into a "meme", for some reason it's really easy to juxtapose the e and h. It predates MMO's however, it even predates MMORPG's :) Just like "leet" (1337) "pr0n" "haxxor" "owned" and "pwned" they all started on IRC (internet relay chat), and became really popularized in Quake death match.

Since e and h are typed with different hands, in fast typing both keys are hit at almost the same time. Get the timing between hands slightly off, and they end up transposed. Transposition between letters typed by a single hand are much more rare.
Just like pwned started as a typo, teh follows suit.

+1 for..."or even IOOSPSSRALALHMWYHNAC. (I'm out of spell points so stop running around like a loon hitting mobs when you have no Armour Class)."
Holy **** that was funny (or maybe I just didn't get enough sleep last night). Either way, +1 and thanks for the laugh.

It's a touch typing thing. The left hand is already in motion, right right is waiting for the left to stop typing the "t" before it shifts to hit the "h", except the left doesn't stop, since it's already in shift position, the brain is already processing the "e" which is also a shift character for the left. Your brain fires t-h-e but physical hand position at that point makes the e (no further handshift shift required) often hit before the h (hand shift required).
And yes, back when I was starting to work I was clocked at 80wpm, after deduction for errors.

Well it looks like I am going to have to alias IOOSPSSRALALHMWYHNAC on my healing types, so I can start a new trend!

Took one typing test for a job in my life.
If you factor in mistakes, I think I hit a blazing -27wpm.
I find that I can't blame letter transposition on poor touch typing, as I cannot touch type. I have to blame it on incompetence as a typist.

this ^^ (sometimes i even edit it so as not to look too silly, but, as a side note, when i type 'pwn' (same thing, but for 'own'), it's always intentional :)
Coit out~

It's like armor class, but spelt the way it was intended to be spelt, before the US version of scrabble was released with all the 'U's taken out :P
