View Full Version : The Ultimate Elven Build

I've been playing around with an elf with a falchion the last few days and have really enjoyed it. I went on a falchion and scimitar buying spree and decided to make a build that took full advantage of the valenar attack/damage enhancements. I was able to work both greater two handed fighting and greater two weapon fighting into the build. I plan to primarily use a falchion and swap to scimitars when I need weapons with different effects. Since I have the free feats from 6 levels of ranger, I also worked improved critical into the build for ranged attacks.

Looks like a standard Kensai 2 / Tempest 1 DPS build...only without the Tempest.
If you're going with a 2H Falchion, then barbarian might be a better mix than ranger.
Say...Fighter 12 / Barbarian 8? Fighter 12 / Barbarian 6 / Cleric 2?
And, as far as the lore goes, Barbarian Rage fits in nicely with the group of Valenar Elves who worship the "Spirits of the Past."
Basically, instead of keeping their ancestors around in physical form as undead demigods, this group of elves calls upon and channels the spirits of dead heroes, much like one is "ridden" by the Loa in rl Voodoo tradition.

I definitely want the ranger twf and bow feats. Taking two levels of barbarian is a definite possibility though. I haven't played one in a while, so I had to do some research. There are definitely some nice level 1 and 2 enhancements, if I can find enough points to squeeze them in. Any suggestion on where to take the two barbarian levels? It seems like they may be worth getting early on.

I have a deep love of elves and have run through many concepts on the ultimate elf. You are right it MUST included ranged.
Good luck

That's not an option? lol Weird things happen when you work 12 hour night shifts. :p

great build if not drow.
amazing soloing ability IF Warforged.
I do think a 16 Sorceror/2 Paladin/2 ROGUE would be better than Rouge since make generally won't help you

16 con maybe overkill for an elf, points could be better spent elsewhere you think? (especially since you take all the toughness enhancements)
i think the ultimate elf would be able to manage their squishyness rather than try to deny it :)
though imo not having imp precise shot degrades the usefulness of manyshot.
how will you utilise TWF? for vorpals etc?
i'm a big elf fan and this build doesnt really scream ultimate, yet, but i like the idea.
i'll probably get burned for this but have you considered getting some charisma and taking 2 pally levels to boost your saves?

I had used too many points for my stats, so I dropped the con to 15. That bought me a little better will save.

I'm planning to use twf for combos like para/vorpal.

I hadn't actually planned on using that name, but I forgot I had jokingly put that as the title and hit submit.

Yeah...I pretty much looked at 2 of everything as a possibility. :p
I just worked the barbarian splash in the character planner. I was bummed to find out that I couldn't take fighter and barbarian toughness enhancements. lol It's been a long time since I've played a barbarian, so I may roll up a vet character and get a feel for it. I'm thinking that I should have probably waited to take the two barbarian levels after getting kensai I though...opinions?

If I'm going to take one, might as well get it over with and take them both...plus all the good enhancements are level 2.

Ok am sure i have some notes at home. However back in the day (1st ed) Elves got +1 with bows, longswords and shortswords.
Have you considered longsword as kensai weapon, stick in monk and go for whirling steel or whatever its called. Dual Longswords and work on bow. More the ultimate elf for me, but is more flavour than DPS.
Just a thought. Sorry if i have cabbaged your head further than 12 hour nights do anyway.

Yeah...tried a longsword elven monk a couple weeks back. I didn't really care for it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Ive always been favorable of the Monk splash simply because you get:
Bonus to AC from wisdom
Bonus to Will Saves (+3 i think)
2 extra feats (i.e. take Toughness and PA)
Evasion (your reflex should be realtively high (in the 30's)
a few extra hitpoints and conentration with Monk's Way of the Tortoise enhancement
you can opt to use the monk wisdom enahncmenet I
for flavor you can also use handwraps and a stance.
There is a version I have ben playing with where you can maintain being an arcane ranger, specialize in falchion for kensai II and still have twf. its a 12/6/2

My question is... why are you even bothering with THF?

I want to try something different. I already have an elven AA with twf khopesh.

So its a flavor build then. I was trying to understand your motive for titling it 'ultimate' is all. :)

That was actually a late night accident. I put it in as the title jokingly and forgot to change it before submitting. If it works out like I plan, I may have to repost it as...
The Elven Army Build: Be All That You Can Be! :D
It's a slightly favored build I guess. I think it's kinda cool and should put out some fairly good dps. :p

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite builds. I've managed to pick up +5 mithral full plate and some vorpal and paralyzing weapons. So fun! :p

It took a few months, but just updated the build with precise shot and imp precise shot. Thanks for the advice.

Some things which puzzle me about this build:
You listed Imp Prec Shot, but that requires base DEX 19; your base DEX is 15, so unless you have a +4 DEX tome, I don't see how you hit it.
Why barbarian rather than monk or rogue?
Why so much WIS? You only have lvl 1 spells, so you only need WIS 11. And you don't have a monk splash, so no WIS AC bonus.
BTW, you can drop GWF; it's not a Kensai II or GWS pre-req.

To be an ultimate elf:
Constitution is too high, drop that down to an 8 and make sure to pick the palest skin tone you can
Skills should be:
Tumbling - So as to prance around
Diplomacy - So as to be haughty, condescending and yet still vaguely polite
Dress making - So as to look like a girly blouse (some Dev petitioning may be needed)
All bow skills are good, very thematic; but I'm not so sure about the very large, and rather sharp, two handed sword. It just seems so... violent. Skill focus - Dress making seems one obvious feat replacement but without the elves most famous attacks I'm not sure what to choose. Those of course would be:
- Gaze of Scorn
- Gaze of Condecension
- Gaze of OMFG my people live for hundreds of years and I just died after 5 minutes as an adventurer
Yeah, that about covers it ;)
(with all due apologies mate for thread derailment and elf-mocking)

I forgot about the prereq for imp precise shot...oh well. I thought I was done. lol I went barbarian, because all of my characters had evasion and I just wanted to wear mithral full plate for a change. I didn't want to spend 3pts for 1 more con, so I put the points in wisdom for saves. I hadn't even though about GWF being a bit of a waste. I was just piling on the fighter feats I guess...still got more feats than I need apparently.

Hmmm...I have 3 feats to spare...maybe dodge, mobility, spring attack...then I can prance around and still kill stuff! lol
