This is a PM build I was asked to design. Requirements were PM, full wizard, human, 28build, CC specced, and range focused. I didn't show the skills, but basically I would max concentration, UMD, and jump. The rest would be at the discretion of the player. Equipment is also dependent on what direction you want to take with it. Any discussion/ratings welcome. Enjoy X).

why have the toughness feats, i.e. not magical related feats

by that, i mean, why not just buy a wand and buff up hp, that sort of thing?

Turns out that Toughness is a prerequisite of Pale Master, having the hp helps out too.. kind of a perk, if you will.

Ah... there you have it. Makes sense then.

Mental Toughness is as well required then?

Who needs Toughness..... its kinda like having a Fortification, A Con and a False Life item...... Some people like being Rezzed a lot ...or piking most of the quest.. waiting on a shrine is fun!!!

Seriously... some people can get along without it, but if you're still building 28 point builds...you probably need it...

toughness is required for Lich form. Mental toughness is required for Wraith form.

@Doxmaster: Thanks for clarifying on the feat selections. I wouldn't take Empower spell on this build for two reasons:

1. It is an "sp negative" feat (15sp for 50% increase dmg means you benefit most from it on spells that take >30 sp only, so mm and force missiles become serious mana sinks).

2. PM builds are gimped nukers IMHO.

Why are PM gimped nukers? The enhancement path leaves little room for maxing out on your elemental/force dmg lines, and you have significantly less sp to your sorc buddy, who will out-dps you any day of the week. If I really can't one hit kill mobs w/out Empower spell, I think proper party buffs and CCs better play to this build's strengths then spamming fw, dis, mm, rays, etc...

Empower spell is a great feat. I just didn't think it fit into this build concept as well as improved mental toughness feat would.

Great replies and info. Thanks all.

So I was checking out the following link: http://ddowiki.com/page/Pale_Master_enhancements

It looks like you can still go Pale Master III if you drop toughness and mental toughness, i.e. drop shroud of wraith and shroud of lich . Perhaps use those two feats for better CC and Summoning abilities?

I realize this is a theme build from a request, but technically, w/o Lich and Wraith, he's still a Pale Master.

Right?

Lich form grants you +1 DC to necromancy spells and another +2 int (amongst other things), which adds up to another +2 DC to your FoD and WoB. Considering the bonus to Con, heavy fort, immunity to neg energy effects, self-heal through death aura, lifeshield, and extra hit points you get from the Toughness feat, I think this is too good a line to pass up.

Wraith form is meh (that's why I didn't include it in the enhancements), but I put in the Mental Toughness there just for fun (to try out the Wraith form) and for sp. No sp = death for pure casters. They are definately substitutable for some other feat depending on what you want (see Empower spell feat on Doxmaster's mod), and who knows, maybe they'll make Wraith form a little more attractive next mod? They sure seem to be putting a lot of effort in general to wiz PrE these days...

Next Mod forms would be toggled, so you could keep them on all the time - so I wouldn't plan a build without them, at least initially
They will also cost more, so watch those SP

Actually, it is still possible to get decent elemental damage. The all or nothing thing isnt necessary; getting 80% of a nuker wizards's nukes and...lets say 60% of a sorcerer nuker's nukes is better than just ignoring nukes altogether.

If, in a raid, people look at your Half-full blue bar and ask "Why arent you dropping Polar rays and such?" And you answer "I'm keeping you Displaced and hasted. Kind of busy with that." you will never be invited to raid anywhere ever again. Even half effective nukes are better than none at all, and without the full AP line for damage, empower will be pretty important for attaining decent damage.

If you dont nuke and don't melee, your roles in many quests will be problematic; it's nice you are keeping an eye on Displacement, but your FWs are still more effective than the melee trying to bring down 10 fire weak enemies at once.

----Edit
Also, the above post is correct. Pale master forms will be on permanent durations for 100 sp; self healing with Death Aura will be more viable as well, as will all other forms of negative energy healing since you wont save against getting healed with Neg energy in undead form. After you rest, you have to re-activate the form and spend another 100 sp.

I believe there is a new Pale master negative energy attack-necro touch is melee range, necro ray is a ranged attack and Necro blast, the new negative energy Pale master ability, is basically a negative energy fireball.

@Doxmaster: Why is dropping empower spell construed as ignoring nukes? And who said anything about ending a raid with 1/2 an sp bar? Without empower, you can still loose your sp bar when necessary... The empower feat makes you more nuke-based, while the improved toughness lets you last a little longer. Who doesn't want to last longer?

But, if your planning on taking empower spell and taking aggro, you better be able to kill it before they get to you (cuz noone likes chasing the wizard), and I don't know if this build can reliably do that, which is why I would lean more towards buffing the party then nuking in this build. If it's the end boss, or if the party dps is lacking though, nuke away...

My picks:

Toughness
Insightful Reflexes
Heighten
Focus Necro
Greater Focus Necro
Extend
Maximize
Quicken
Empower
Enlarge (could be mental toughness if you want to play with wraith)
Spell Pen
Greater Spell Pen (if TR then wizard past life)

My style:

Non-epic:
Gather monsters, kill via aura, guards, dps. Use spells as needed

Stay “alive” via aura, lich hp, concordant, abbot robe(fleshlings only), touch(goes away U7) and occasional neg blast

All metamagic runs continuously because mana is free. (torc, concordant, vile blasphemy, spell storing, archivist, bauble, etc)

Epic:
Stealth
Mass hold+melee
Firewall ‘n wait (cheese)
