View Full Version : Critiques on a Pure Rogue Mechanic Build?

Seriously I need some suggestions on this build :/ frankly I don't like it at all but it's nearly the best I can come up with that balances DPS and skills.

Updated 1:
I switched out some of the feats, mainly Weapon Focus: Ranged for Rapid Reload.

Updated 2:
I removed a few enhancements, namely a good number from the Skill Boost, Improved Trap Sense, and Trap Lore tiers, to be replaced with higher SA damage and accuracy.

Critiques?

Frankly I'm not sold on any mechanic builds yet, but it seems to me their biggest shortcoming is lack of feats. I'm also biased against ranged-only builds with no melee skills at all. Maybe something like rogue 13 / ftr 6 / monk 1 would be better? That gets you 12 feats: Toughness (monk bonus), Rapid Shot, Rapid Reload, PBS, Prec Shot, Imp Prec Shot, WF & WS Ranged (Kensai I pre-reqs), TWF x 3, and either Finesse, PA, or CE.

idk, I wanna try out the full effects of a pure mechanic class before I start splashing in other classes. I don't want to sacrifice skills for feats if I'll need skills more in later levels after all.

Well, on your current build you could drop Listen & Repair entirely (unless the latter affects the Repair Construct ability); Diplomacy can be nice but isn't necessary; Balance & Jump are useful, but they don't need to be maxed out (esp. the latter since you can get a Jump spell cast on you). So that would eliminate a whole bunch of skill pts without touching your stealth or trap skills. Missing out on Mechanic III might be unfortunate, but that's not getting added in U7, so who knows how long it will be before we see it?

I think you can drop whatever additional levels in Trap Lore and Trap Sense you've taken as enhancements beyond those that are needed for Mechanic. With the existing rogue passive feat of Trap Sense that is buffed every few levels - on a pure rogue build you'll have this very very high by level 20, and you've also taken improved evasion to reduce damage when you (rarely) fail. As a result, those extra enhancements are wasted, IMO. You could use those points to beef up sneak attack damage a bit for some added dps.

You could also consider swapping out Defensive Roll for another feat of Skill Mastery (you can take SM repeatedly), which would let you drop Skill Boost IV and have another 4 ap for sneak attack buffing.

You might also consider Rapid Reload instead of Weapon Focus: Ranged. With a high dex and magic repeaters, your to hit is going to be plenty high, and Rapid Reload DOES stack with Rapid Shot for maximum rate of fire. This will also bump up your dps.

Okay, I updated it and I think I'm a little happier with this one.

Oh I had one more thought on this build. You might consider the other rogue capstone. Deadly Shadow gives +2 to Int and 4 additional sneak attack dice. Cheat Death is only +2 Dex (already very high as built) and chance to self-rez.

Mechanics get Int bonus added to xbow damage, so the +2 Int will bump up your damage more than +2 Dex and the increase in sneak attack dice will go a long way to offsetting the sneak attack enhancements you couldn't afford and the fact that you aren't Assassin specced or halfling Guile/Cunning. :)

I would but the D&D Character Planner hasn't added it yet ;c

A few things to keep in mind. The repeaters are tons of fun, however unlike the AA you have no way to summon more bolts (you can use wands of flame arrow with umd which will increase you ammo and add some dps depending on the target.) So you will want to ensure you get your House D favor up as soon as you can so you can pick up the returning bolts (and silver etc). Since you have to pack what you will use in the mission and not everything takes sneak attack damage you will en up having to carry tons of fun with you so you will need some strength. You should be fine one you get to level 13 and you are able to find a +6 str item (pumping you to 16). The issue I have run into is in the long quests with lots of chests and the game just loving to hand out the full plate.
Rapid Shot and Rapid reload stack to speed up your rate of fire. Which will increase your DPS. My shooter is a blame thrower; so I have Improved curse, para, Improved destruction, Wounding and puncturing. In the Mid level quests she really shined I was able to use my crossbow for CC and decent DPS. End Game I have found that she is not going to solo much of anything. I am ok with that because I built a support Bard.
If I could pick once single piece of gear and just hand it to you it would be an EEE Green steal heavy repeater Earth Grab dc 35, mess o' acid damage, sneak attack not too expensive to build. My other choice would be a LitII they are a bit more involved and expensive to make only about 2% chance to proc vs 5% on the earth grab but not everything can be EG. The last choice simply because I have not played with one yet would be the DustII no save on the damage which seems cool but what do you take at T1 +6 Int (so +3 damage per shot) or Unholy (2d6 vs good targets)

1) Wand of Flame Arrow
2) House Deneith Favor
3) Strength and weight
4) Repeaters are a blast
5) Green Steel E3, Lit2, Dust2
Make sure you update your post and let us know how it goes!
