you hit like 3 times in melee while you throw one throwing weapon. that might be exaggerated but generally shows how useful throwing weapons still are ;)

Which would gimp you at mêlée distance..but at ranged hitting with Barbarian Strength might be plausible.

I can say at level 4, they're... well, they just are. :o But my little Tchukka (Orien) is one fast lil furry-foot. ;)


edit: Oops. WAS. First version was Barb, then made her again as a Fighter base. Erm, so nvm, I guess. So many kiddies runnign around, you tend to lose track of em sometimes.... :o

Full Throwing Feats (all the speed ones so min 13 Dex) and weap spec if enough feats
Full Rage and Throwing Enhancements
Some named or high level gear..Pref Repeating
and Brutal Throw

I have a halfling fighter kensi (splashed with rouge 2) along the same lines and it performs sub-par despite a decent collection of throwing weapons for its level. Even without power attack I perform much better mixing it up in melee than throwing. There are times when it is handy to be able to throw hard and good but most of the time it is just "brutal". I will likely respec the kensai into something more helpful if I ever feel the need too.

I've gotten better about stepping around the make-up jokes - but I can see this one so clearly. An over-dabbed hobbit in a smoke-filled club situated down a dark alley just off the main strip. The low stage lighting barely illuminating a scene of.... :eek:

^^ This. Bow/thrown damage is not comparable with melee damage at all in DDO. Trying to make throwing competitive with a gimmick build will get you mocked and blacklisted from groups.

A thrown character work much better with a Fighter (weapon specs) than a Barbarian. The frenzied berserker vicious bonuses to damage doesn't kick in with thrown weapons if I remember right, and they don't crit much. But if you don't care about that it's all good :)

I have one of these and it's kinda fun. Sucks in comparison to my others, but does ok until you get to the very high levels.

I built a halfling thrower build on Khyber; his name is Toss. I've had him for three years now, but I've always known he wouldn't be a sustainable character at end game. I've just kept him around because he's fun to play from time to time in the low-mid-level range of 6-8.

When I built him I knew he wouldn't be much of a DPS machine, so I added a few rogue levels for some backstab damage when he throws. Backstab damage will appear but you have to be within backstab distance--so still fairly close to the encounter. When in Gwylan's I get frustrated with how quickly the fighters and paladins can mow down the mobs--so I switch to sword and board. That always outdoes the throwing.

So, if you want to build a halfling thrower barbarian for fun--I say go for it. There are racial enhancements for halflings--so at low levels it can be fun.

Sounds like a halfling version of the Gutbuster Brigade from Forgotten Realms.

The only throwing feats you really need are brutal throw, quick draw and ic: thrown.
If you splash two levels of fighter that would take care of 2 of them so you'd b able to take all normal barb feats minus one, which could be either stunning blow, ic: slash or gthf.

Loosing ic: slash would be a huge damage loss on axes, if you went greatsword or falchion it wouldn't be as bad.

Personally i'd drop gthf for now, might be not the best choice with the u7 changes though.

All in all, you'd end up being melee most of the time, you can make up for the damage loss with halfling guile to a degree, but you won't be able to take the full range of it and as barb will have aggro fairly often.

Imo if you leave your melee option open which is easy with a splash that character could be very viable, certainly not top dps but solid dps nonetheless.

For barbs, yes. For a ranger, no.
No class gets anything special to make thrown/bow damage competitive with melee damage for a sustained fight. I'm not talking about killing trash or 20 second DPS burst windows with many shot. In the context of doing sustained DPS to a boss, melee damage wins hands-down compared to bow/thrown damage. Bow/thrown attackers per minute are far behind melee attacks per minute. This is the primary reason bow/thrown damage trails behind melee damage so much.

Halflings get only +1 damage/hit bonus with thrown weapons vs other races. +2 enhancement, but -1 from lower STR. So why halflings?

I think Drow with shurikens would be better :p
