I'm not a new player per say, but I have a question that's been bothering me about the improved critical feat.

◦Improved Critical (requires base attack bonus of +8 or higher): This feat doubles the threat range of a certain weapon type (Thrown, Ranged, Bludgeoning, Piercing or Slashing). This feat can be taken multiple times, each time applying to a different kind of weapon.

DDOWiki clearly states that Piercing weapons are:
◦Dagger
◦Dart
◦Heavy pick
◦Light pick
◦Longbow
◦Nightforge Spike
◦Rapier
◦Scorpion Tail Shortbow
◦Shortsword
◦Throwing dagger

The one in red is the one that concerns me as it's also listed under the Ranged weapons and the ones in yellow are under Thrown weapons. Why is it that longbows are considered piercing, but shortbows and crossbows are not? Then in this case, if it can be taken multiple times, and you were to take imp crit ranged and imp crit piercing, would they stack? I'm assuming no. It sure would be nice if all the arrow/bolt weapons were in the piercing category. I mean, they are piercing weapons right? ;) It makes things more difficult than it should be for someone like a rogue mechanic. (go go repeaters and rapiers in the same category!)

These are just a few of the many things that came up when I was contemplating rolling up a rogue mechanic.

DDO does you a favor with this feat. wpn focus feats and wpn spec. feats

PnP is 1 feat = 1 weapon. (for example longsword, but not scimitar)

its a gift, take it.

Piercing weapons in terms of the feat does not mean all weapons that do piercing damage. Ranged weapons fall under ranged, thrown weapons fall under thrown for feat purposes, regardless of damage type.

I realize that, I was just being my typical greedy rule-mongering self is all. Just be glad you never played pnp with me.....

This is obviously not the case if darts and longbows are listed under piercing. Longbows are under both ranged and piercing, darts are under thrown and piercing, throwing axes are under thrown and slashing, etc etc.

DDOWiki clearly states that Piercing weapons are:
You're reading too much into a page that is out of date, was probably never completed, and never even should have been created.

The fact that "Scorpion Tail Shortbow" is an entry should be a clue to how pointless the list is.

that list you quoted has nothing to do with improved crit

for improved crit ranged weapons count as ranged and throwing weapons as throwing, no matter the damage

they are just in the your list because they are piercing weapons damagewise

esp if you click on the weapontype link in the imp crit article:

Piercing

Piercing weapons are the agile characters forte. They are able to do damage by being pushed into the target with little resistance. A stiletto is the typical piercing weapon.

* Dagger
* Heavy pick
* Light pick
* Rapier
* Shortsword

Ranged

Ranged in DDO means a weapon that fires a projectile from a launcher, such as a crossbow.

* Great crossbow
* Heavy crossbow
* Light crossbow
* Longbow
* Repeating heavy crossbow
* Repeating light crossbow
* Shortbow
