View Full Version : What do I need to pay you, Turbine, to lock toolbars?

Name your price. Seriously.
What would I have to pay you to make a locked toolbar really, really, really stay locked. I'm talking "won't move even if I grab it and move it" locked. I'm talking "Hannibal Lecter not even gonna let you eat because you'll find a way to escape" locked. Locked!
v. locked, lock·ing, locks
v.tr.
1.
a. To fasten the lock of: close and lock a drawer.
b. To shut or make secure with or as if with locks: locked the house.
2. To confine or exclude by or as if by means of a lock: locked the dog in for the night; locked the criminal up in a cell.
3. To fix in place so that movement or escape is impossible; hold fast: The ship was locked in the ice through the winter. She felt that she had become locked into a binding agreement.
LOCKED!

oops...sorry about that last one. Not sure how it got in here.
Anyway...LOCKED!
What will it take? 2 hours of a developer's time? I'm good with that. Let's say your coding guys make $40/hr with 40% EBE. Assume they're too busy to do this task on straight time so I'll pay OT. That's $56/hr plus $20 per hour OT for a total of $152 (hey, I'm not paying benefits on OT hours...I'll only go so far). I'm good with that. To whom should I write the check? QC? Not needed because he couldn't make it worse than it is now considering my bars fly all over the screen even though they are "locked." Am I off in my estimate? Fine, tell me what it will cost and let me pay it.
Please, for the love of all that is sacred, let us lock our toolbars!

Those checks are made payable in increments of time, and not dollars.
I will let you know as soon as I am unstuck from this ladder and actually begin climbing it.

IIRC, that locks you from dragging stuff off the toolbar, not dragging the toolbar itself.
Half the reason I keybind everything was NEVER to deal with this again.

1) locking the toolbars themselves would be the best ever...infact, being able to 'lock display' for all items that are movable on the screen would be perfect (orb, map, etc) or individually in the UI settings.
2) you can lock the items on your toolbars all you want, but when I first log in with a character and the toolbars are locked...I can still take any item and pull it off or move it once...then it is locked.
Upon log in, I always unlock and then relock the toolbars to avoid this issue.

Correct. I am working on this and hope to have it in for Update 7. My assumption at this point is that shouldn't be too hard, but I've been surprised before.
And it is a legitimate bug, as it seems to happen only with items from the inventory, when logging in with toolbars already locked.

Since you brought it up...for the millionth time...I'd like to see the hotbars stick together when you drag them near each other. I'm tired of trying to space them evenly and get them all lined up. This is a pretty common feature in software programs. It would be nice to have it in the game.

Yes please do make them sticky.
Other probably harder changes to make that I would suggest....
Also - much bigger change but potentially make it like excel where you have a set area (personally set and sizable) to plug the bars in (ie. sticky areas) with a locking mechanism and then also allow them to float on the screen if desired. This would allow me to switch between computers and not have my bars get squished when I go lower res on my laptop.
Ie. cake in stomach and on plate....mmmmm cake.
another option would be to just have the bars resize properly when you change resolution. (ninja'd dammit)

So if you are on multiple computers and using different resolutions you can have fixed layout for each resolution. Having the toolbars look okay on 1920X1080 and then going to a machine that has only 1366X768 and have the toolbars all messed up is a bit of a pain and really shouldn't be the case on a modern game.

I have encountered this problem as well.
I usually run an external 30" LCD monitor that is 1920x1200 resolution for DDO.
I brought my i7 laptop on vacation and that resort happened to have a free high speed internet connection in every unit. However, the default builtin panel is only 1366x768 resolution. I had to unlock the bars and then move and reorganize them. Now that I am back from vacation, I had to move the bars again, back to the original formation.
Is there a developer's recommendation organization of these bars? For arcane magic users? For divine magic users? For dual wielding meleers? For arcane archers?
If there is a way to customize the tool bars and user themes into a stored profile, I don't care whether it is server side or client side; that will be great.
Also, I can bring CodeShaper physically out to lunch if that entice you more. ;)

Any chance of getting an easier lock/unlock mechanism instead of having to go into the options box? Maybe something similar to how the inventory system works (a lock icon that can toggle the toolbars individually)?
edit - the reason here is that most of my toolbars are completely static and never change but I frequently move a couple around and change stuff on them during quests which prevents me from being able to use the lock feature (since it is all or nothing). This of course results in me, occasionally and accidentally, dragging stuff around...

Yes, I am also working on that problem, although stopping the items from moving is higher priority.
And to address someone else's suggestion: Sure, I could automatically unlock/relock on login, but I'd much rather fix it properly. Adding a hack to fix a bug is not my preferred method of working.
As for all the other wish-list items mentioned in this thread, I'm right there with you, but we're not going to get sticky toolbars, client-side UI layouts, default UI layouts, or any of the rest of it for U7. Or even U8 or U9. You can consider all of those items to be on my own future development wish-list, FWIW.
I would love to get all those in, but they involve significantly more work than fixing the toolbar bugs. They would need to be a major part of the work for an update, so they compete directly with other new stuff.

Thanks a ton for your replies, Codeshaper. I started this thread as an attept to (somewhat) humorously point out an annoying but and it's great to see that you're working on it and it's a priority.
While I've got your attention, there's another toolbar glitch (I wouldn't call it a bug) that would be nice to see addressed.
When toolbars are locked, the control box portion of the toolbar (the part with the button to flip it or send it back underneath the other bars) disappears. However, even though you can't see it, it's still there and will block buttons that may be below it. I stack 6 toolbars on the right side of my screen in 3 columns of two. The bottom buttons of the top 3 toolbars cannot be used unless I click the very top of them, even though I can see the whole button. I think this is because the invisible control box of the bottom bars is on top of the bars above it.
EDITED: Here's a screenshot. The buttons circled in red cannot be pushed unless I click on the very top of the button. I assume they are being covered by the invisible border/control box of the toolbars below.

Honestly, with the advent of lesser, greater, and TRs, the ability to export your layout (where you have your hot bars setup, chat window setup, etc.) should be put into the game ASAP. Lotro has this, and has had it for years? now.

This!
Aside from the adventure status/favor window going blank (which I believe is slated for a fix in U7), this is my biggest peeve. I can't properly play without a very clean UI, and with things moving around all the time, it is just impossible to keep tidy.
It is so encouraging to see a major level of reengagement by the devs though, so even if it doesn't make U7, there seems to be a good chance it will eventually get fixed. For that I am grateful.

As a user of many toolbars, that toolbar 'overlap' glitch has annoyed me in the past too. I'm now in the habit of leaving sufficient space at the end of the bars, but from time to time I forget.

This fix is finished and is now in QA for verification. And no, it didn't take me this long to fix it. I've just been busy.

Great news! I was on Lammania last night and panicked a bit when I was easily able to drag my icons off the toolbar. I was hoping your fix hadn't made it to the server yet. Whew!
Quick question: Did your fix just address the icons moving off the bar or did it also address the entire bar itself being moveable when "locked" ?

EDITED: Here's a screenshot. The buttons circled in red cannot be pushed unless I click on the very top of the button. I assume they are being covered by the invisible border/control box of the toolbars below.

This annoys me more than the locked- but-not-really locked items that CodeShaper has already fixed.
It's fairly easy to confirm that it's the hidden control tab on the end of the bar that is responsible. With most of spot '0' obscured, click on one of the other numbers on the obscured hotbar - now you can click anywhere you want on the '0' item for that hotbar. Now, click any one of the items on the obscuring hotbar. How you'll have the same restrictions for clicking '0' on the obscured hotbar.

is the UI done in Scaleform, as the UI for LOTR is? I could use a really good working example to debug, to help me learn Flash/Scaleform .. if you guys could put out just the Flash stuff... we could all fix this stuff for you, then submit it :D

Codeshaper, THANKS for the fix! My bars are staying locked and my icons are staying put, just like they should. This is a HUGE improvement.
I also want to thank you (or whomever did it) for making the in-game message window able to be clicked through. I'm still not used to it and still dragging loot boxes out from under the message window but I'll eventually remember I can just click through it.
Great UI improvements!!

This has been one of my biggest complaints about the UI since they broke it back in ?mod 5?. I actually know a player who quit because of this and came back right after the reLaunch to see if it had been fixed, only to leave again when it wasn't.
So, yes! Big KUDOs to whoever fixed this! Always having to drag things out from under my combat log was very irritating!
