View Full Version : Be careful during trades.

I was soloing an old quest for favors with a new player who decided to tag along.
Found a piece of item i thought might help the newbie, belt of light fort. It's not much, and I don't need it, so I decided tell the newbie I'll trade him for a few plats--don't want him to feel like everything's free.
The price was a practically a giveaway, so of coures he jumped at the opportunity.
Here's how things went:
1. I started trade, put the belt there.
2. the newbie put plats on.
3. I click accept.
4. he said "hold on a second." then sets the plats to 0.
5. I was just trying to get it over with, so I clicked accept beforehand.
6. He quickly clicked accept.
I tried to give him a chance to cop to it, but instead of going straight, he came up with crazy excuses like "lag." (lol)
I didn't kick him out of my party for that--it's not like it's gonna have a life-changing effect on the guy. But needless to say, I made a mental note to myself about his character.
I'm glad this took place when I'm trying to help a newbie, instead of something bigger. To the fellow good fellas who are reading this, while being nice, don't forget to keep your eyes open and watch for those who are less than noble. Money is a great tool to catch those with bad characters.

he is a thief and a swindler, and you didn't kick him?

I had something similar happen to me once, except that I was the buyer, and I think it was due to a glitch in the trade window.
Right when I clicked accept, the plat I had offered dropped to zero - but I didn't go into the field and change or delete the payment. The item came across to me, but no plat went the other direction. I quickly sent a tell to the other player asking him to check his plat, and then opened another trade window to transfer the correct amount. When I tried to just pass the plat across in the trade window, it wouldn't let me put any plat in - it kept dropping to zero each time I clicked accept. After 2-3 tries, I ended up running to the mailbox and mailing him the correct amount. He confirmed via a tell that he received the plat, much to the relief of both of us by that point.
I think I had that happen one other time as well when trading something to a friend. I go very slowly and carefully when making trades now, especially if the item has any value. I don't entirely trust the trade window anymore.

I remember the same thing happening to me back when I was F2P. And I handled it much the same way.
I do think there are issues with trading monies to and from F2P players. Like no more than 500gp (yes Gold)or something like that but don't quote me on that.

I had something similar happen to me once, although to the best of my recollection the value dropped to zero as soon as I clicked away from the 'plat' box; not upon hitting accept. I believe it was because there is no banker to provide currency exchange during trades. The value arranged was 2 million gp; I had 200k plat. I tried to enter 2 million gp and it reset to zero. The trade was successful when I entered 200k plat instead.

I always hit the accept button AFTER the other person...end of problem....and yes I am that trustworthy.....basically because I rarely if ever allow myself to be burned.

That doesn't make a difference. If you're accepting the trade, and either party changes the items in the trade window, it toggles you to not accepting any more.

With big item trades involving lots of money, I'm careful. But with semi-charity trades, I tend to be lax.
But that's also why it sucked. I mean, I can understand why it's tempting to swindle 10K pp, for example. But 100pp? Really? That's just a lvl 7 hireling.
And it amused me when he asked "is it okay if I add you?" Amazing.
If anything, that guy has just lost his chance for a potential ally, which is worth much more than that pocket-change.
