usually a falchion - since sacrifices & smites increase the multiplier at higher levels, you want as much of a crit chance as you can get. My paladin has a +2 bodyfeeder of pure good falchion which is great - crits often & you get +15 temp HP every time it does, which can be used to power more smites & boost your DPS.

The ultimate weapon in the hands of a 2hf pure pally is the epic sword of shadows though - put the silver upgrade on it, combined with Weapons of Good (level 20 capstone) and go to town :) I've heard of pallies getting critical smites for 1000+ damage

The Best Weapon can vary based on what your building your character from, what weapons you have available, and how much ou plan to spend.

Falchions are indeed a great choice as a weapon due to having such a high critical threat range, but they require you make a heavy investment in producing a weapon for your character to use, either in time or platinum. This is probably the best choice if you are TRing another character into a Paladin who had a Falchion beforehand. It's also a good choice for Elves for racial reasons

Blessed Cold Iron Greatswords are available from the House J Reagent shop, and then improve on it with eventually better loot, meaning you won't need to make the sizable investment you would with Falchions. That makes them an ideal choice if you are looking at the long haul run in the class. If your planning on starting a Paladin from Scratch and staying as a Paladin, as a completionist ending on the Paladin as his final class pick, or whatever reason; this is probably your ideal choice.

Mauls are another good choice to consider - especially if you plan on TRing your Paladin into another class. Blessed Cold Iron Mauls make up the only other choice from the House J Reagent Shop in terms of Two Handed Weapons. It is also in a field of its own compared to Falchions, or Greatswords because it's a Bludgeon Weapon.

if you are a new (read as broke) then you will want to go the "holy sword" route so you don't have to grind GS ingredients.
That basically leaves you with 2 options for a 2 hander weapon first is the greatsword which has is a 2d6 19-20/ x2 which is decent
or a maul which is a 1d10 20/x3.

which to use up to you. Since the pally abilities add 1 to the crit threat range it is pretty much a toss up unlike things like impact or keen which double the threat range.
----

going holy sword you don't have to pick you "main" till later when you can actually cast holy sword so your early options are open as to what you want to use. Before holy sword great axes are nice as is a falc. If your an elf go with the falc for sure till holy sword time then consider your options. for everyone else falc or Great axe or great sword all have pluses and minuses so take you pick. For non elves i would say Gaxe or Gsword is a better choice due to having more options available form the named weapon end rewards and falcs just seem more rare to me in general as does the maul.

but hey just remember till you pick up your improved critical feat what you use doesn't matter so much and feel free to swap between maul , axe, falc and gsword depending on what loot you grab. After Improved crit you will limit your choices. i'd suggest slash so you can still use a Gsword , Gaxe or falc depending on the best weapon you can find/buy.

IC slash does tilt the field rather steeply to the falc with its larger crit range so you probably want to find a decent falc after getting IC slash till you get Holy sword then either use a gSword or swap your IC slash for IC blunt and pick up a maul.
With the larger threat range of the gSword with IC slash and holy sword option it is probably the best all around choice.
