it seems like the only advertisements on ddo is for...ddo. kind of like it, seeing the broccolin driving is funny. but why do they do it? it doesnt make much sense to me.

Because very few other ads make it through?
I think it's kind of a placeholder. Most people seem to block them regardless.

All I see is the text "Advertisement" at the top. Adblock Plus totally filters them out. Seeing that they're just Turbine advertising themselves, sounds like I'm not missing that much after all.

I would guess that because the advertisements are funny and creative that it would encourage more word of mouth from the community.
I could also speculate that it comes from former perception amongst the community that the game was never advertised (an Atari shortcoming), and that Turbine is in fact aggressively marketing and advertising the game.

At work I see only "Advertisement" but at home I see ads. There is a funny thread around pointing out the week or so a WoW add would pop up. :p I see a few other MMO ads up there, and some other (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=264895) random web stuff, but mostly it is DDO.
