I'll start off this post by noting that I AM SURE THIS HAS BEEN POSTED ALREADY. I shall continue by apologizing for what may appear to be advertising for a competitor.
This game needs more cosmetic content. Cloaks, boots, etc. There as so many variables that could be used to customize a character that are wasted. In addition, armors and headgear is far too typical. Too many times do you find a rad looking piece that is lame or a lame looking piece that is worth wearing. DT armor is an eyesore. Go stand in meridia among the sea of white grey and baby blue. So I cry for more cosmetics and show places they could be implemented. But where can you get this content? Why should you stop working on important bug fixes so i may hang a rug on my character's back? You SHOULDN'T! Let me share with you all a game called "Team Fortress 2", their community content system, and some proof of its smooth execution.
The game, which can be read about at www.teamfortress.com is a team Based FPS game, which is irrelevant to this thread. They have however, which is vital to this thread, recently started accepting user generated cosmetic content. You may see how they handle this process here: http://www.teamfortress.com/contribute/
The workmanship of the community can be amazing. Most of the community content looks far superior to the original content made by the game designers themselves, and everyone seems to enjoy the new stuff. Some examples of what a large community is capable of can be found at http://www.polycount.com/2010/07/15/the-team-fortress-2-polycount-pack-winners and http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3209/newhatsgrayson.png are all examples of user made content that has been allowed into the game after a strict, unexplained internal process.
I hope this thread has not appeared to be a giant brown-nosing of this game, nor seen as advertisement. I only link and name because it is necessary to explain my points. I would LOVE to see more cosmetic content in this game, and I'd love to see what some of the talented users would be capable of creating if given the go ahead, for DDO. For sake of TL;DR I won't go into it, but there have also been several community contests based around stuff like this. I can only see DDO benefiting from similar activities.
This is content that doesn't effect gameplay and is made by someone else. How is that not appealing to game devs?
