View Full Version : Talking to NPCs

Just wondering why when we talk to NPCs we repeatedly act surprised when we talk to them, even after meeting them for the thousandth time? Why do I act as if I have never met the crew of my guilds airship everytime I meet them? Saying things like "Uh what" and "umm, hi" etc etc.
Even when I am playing on one of my lawful good, very wise and well brought up clerics I still sound like some intellectually challenged lobotomized teenage monkey saying things like "Yeah sure, whatever", and go around Eberron displaying a total lack of concern or complete contempt towards people that I should be treating with respect or admiration. Come on scriptwriters, you can do better than that, there's enough of that kind of stupidity all over the internet,
you may as well have us saying "wut you want" or "go away noob" like a bunch of arrogant kids with less than two brain cells to rub together.
I mean, we may as well go around calling all the npcs we don't like "noobs" or "tards" or "morons" like a bunch of unimaginative brats who are unable to think up any meaningful way to insult people,
Dungeons and Dragons has always been a game for people with a reasonable amount of intelligence and great imagination, don't degenerate us to the level of the WOW generation, stop making our characters sound as dumb as half the kids out there please!
Would my lawful good clerics realy help smugglers sell goods to kobolds or whatever "as long as the pay is good" some quests should be accepted using completely different dialogue depending on a characters alignment. Ok, I realize this would involve a little extra coding and some intelligent script writing, but isn't roleplaying what Dungeons and Dragons has always been about?
Anyway, my lawful good clerics summoned hellhound is attacking some children in the park, I suppose I'd better go and calm him down...

Hehe, I am well aware of how the dialogue works in this game, I've been in games production myself for over 23 years, if the coding has been well implemented there's no reason why a little extra coding couldn't make things a little more interesting.

Well, you're probably 5% of the players who actually take time to read the dialouges. Most folks click/cycle through them to buy/sell/get buff, or talk to quest giver to just simply get the quest/reward. So I guess on the list of priorities, good dialogues likely ranked very low.

I have taken the time to read the lines slowly now, and wow. I only just found out that the Xorian Cypher is linked to the Dreams of Insanity.

*edit.

I agree... you are mentioning the dialogues with the airship crew, but the last time i thought some dialogues are pretty stupid was when i paid attention to the conversation i was having with a door :D

...the one that transports you to the airship ;)

Surely you have worked with production managers that have little patience for "a little more interesting" that requires "a little extra coding". "get it done now! and move on to the next 1000 things on that list." is more likely.
Why do you think Speed Racer hardly moves? It isn't because him doing so would not be "a little more interesting" for a little extra drawing.
Code is art and art takes time and time is money.

Oh yes, I have felt physically sick in the past after arguing with project managers and shareholders to try and get a few more days to make a game twice as good after spending 18 months working on it.
Of course, it's not a high priority enhancmment to the game I am requesting, neither do I expect it to be taken as such, though what's a few hours to rewrite some of the awful dialogue in the games database?

I'm still trying to figure out what 'good thing' I could ~possibly~ be thinking of when given that option while talking to Annelise in Bounty Hunter.

I mean, I'm a female halfling... Do I want her around to give me wardrobe tips based on her recent experiences? :p
