So I recently ran a shroud.
It failed.
During part 1 the portal beating was... "slow" at one point I broke off the group beating on one portal to start beating on another. In the time it took me to beat a portal down to 3/4 with a pair of +5 pg vicious longswords the rest of the group managed to kill 1 portal. Mine is not a "rawr dps" build, in fact in many ways it's far from optimal on that front. leaving part 1 it was asked by several members of the group if there was anyone that was doing this for the first time.
1 person said it was their first time.
Everyone died in part 2.
During the events in part 2 that got everyone killed 5 people admitted it was their first time, albeit more as an excuse when things started going bad than anything else "how was I supposed to know, it's my first time!".
Both healers, using mics asked several times for people not to go in the middle (they were very emphatic on this point). Even going so far as to tell people that if they didn't know where to go at the start to stay put and they would come get them. So of course, the bosses ended up getting pulled early.
In addition to that, the "stay put if you don't know where to go, we will lead you the right way" thing worked because after porting in, I ran down to the south area that people normally gather to find myself alone (on the map there were 4 groups, all sitting where they ported in, waiting for someone to lead them). I was fine at first, fighting only 1 trash orthon and a cat... when 2 more orthons and 3 bearded devils suddenly teleported out of nowhere on to my head. I think I did rather well before I died. Shortly after that the group arrived and I was raised (huzza?).
Half the group went after the fire elemental after being told there only needed too be 2 people there. They had to be told repeatedly to move before they did. The gnoll was down there for several minutes, with the cleric practically begging someone to get it away.
The gnoll was prep'd, the orc was prep'd and despite both people on mics saying it, and people texting it; killed early by overzealous melee.
The orc and gnoll killed the sorc sitting on the crystal after they got back to the middle, I ran over to get the sorc's stone and their aggro (by this point I was out of rez scrolls already), I grabbed the sorc stone and dropped it at the feet on the cleric that was healing the melee fighting the orthon, he rezzed him, then I ran off with the gnoll and the orc.
At that point I found myself with one other melee (a ranger, he fought well but died) fighting the gnoll and the orc, I managed to prep them both and just as I announced that, I was commanded, then killed. While I was running to get raised (I was) someone killed the gnoll (again) and dragged the orc up to where several people were killing the orthon, they all died shortly after.
I, with orthon and orc in tow, ran away, found a far corner and recalled. I barely made it, I hit the loading screen just as the orthon teleported up to me.
I had entered the quest with 10 raise dead scrolls, during the course of part 2 I used every one of them.
================================================== ==================
Am I mad? ...No, it's hard to say why but I just find it hard to mad about the whole mess.
(the thread title was a lie!)
Lessons learned:
Carry more than 10 raise dead scrolls.
In the end, I think the end result was a good thing. I think it was good because several players new to the shroud learned what they should not be doing (hopefully). I also hope, that in noticing how ineffective there were against the portals they will now ask someone what they need to beat on portals with.
It failed.
