View Full Version : Mary Quite Contrary - The New Troll?

I've been seeing this often lately. Someone asks for advice or a question, someone gives the newbie advice or an answer, and a pack of these Marys come in and give the opposite advice/answer, saying the first person is wrong. Examples.
Newbie: Is the DDO store supposed to pop up frequently in Korthos?
OtherGuy: No, it's a glitch.
Mary1: No, it's not a glitch.
Mary2: They're doing it to encourage you to buy DDO store points.
Mary1: Yeah. That's how they make money after all.
Newbie: Can you get the Misery's Peak rewards more than once?
OtherGuy: Nope, it's a one-time reward.
Mary: It's repeatable.
Newbie: :(
OtherGuy: No, you can't get the rewards more than once.
Mary: Yes you can, dude. You can get the Misery's Peak rewards repeatedly.

Actually, there is a new quest, as of U5 where you have to buy a bottle of "Old Sully's Grog" in the ddo store for an NPC on the dock. The store pops up so that new players get the idea where to get it. The end reward is a spirit cake, for the 'cost' of 5TP.
I make no claims as to any ulterior motives on Turbine's part :D

The thing is, though, is that I'm pretty sure it's not WAI.
It should only pop up for the person performing the quest when they talk to that NPC. Due to a glitch, it pops up for everyone instead.

You are correct...one of the devs, I'm feeling "Madfloyd", but not positive, came on the forums and said that it was an undesired side-effect where it was supposed to happen only when you get the quest, but is instead happening to anyone in Korthos. I believe he mentioned that it would be fixed in the next update, but don't quote me on that.
I'm too lazy to search for the post right now, but if you search on "Old Sully's Grog" or "DDO Store window", I think you'll be able to track it down for proof.

Asking for a definitive answer on the /advice channel is like asking the Internet for a definitive answer. So, take it as a place to get several answers to a question and use your best judgement or test results to decide which is right.

Oh, and you CAN get multiple Misery's Peak rewards...here's how:
1) Create a toon using Vet status, and make sure you pick up your gear before you leave the boat...this will give you whatever "set" is deemed proper for the class you choose it for.
2) Go back to Korthos and complete the quest series, ending in Misery's Peak.
At this point, you will be given a choice of one of the normal end rewards...only problem is, you CANNOT choose the same item that you already have, because it is exclusive. You can do this to get 2 DIFFERENT sets, such as Anger's Step and Archivists', but it will not allow you to get 2 Archivists' necklaces for the additional SP clickies... :(
ooo...400... :)

The responses you are getting are opinions and people have different ones. Sometimes its hard to tell a normal poster defending his opinion from a troll trying to stir up trouble.

Sometimes the Marys are a problem beecause they're giving incorrect information.
Sometimes the Marys are a godsend because they're correcting invalid responses.
Taking the Misery's Peak example - both are correct. You can only get the end reward once per character. My Ranger currently has 3 Misery's Peak end rewards, though. He started with one. He got one from the Misery's Peak end reward handout and he got one when he did True Reincarnated.

Sadly, many of these responses are actually facts and some people are just getting some of them wrong. Sometimes it's hard to tell a normal poster who just made a mistake from a troll trying to stir up trouble.

That's kinda a case of bridging extraneous information. You don't want to bog someone down with a long, complicated answer of "technically yes if you __" when they more than likely just want to know "if I do Misery's Peak a second time, do I get the reward again?"
For the question of, "Can I get multiple end rewards for Misery's Peak," you can say:
'Yes, you can obtain multiple end rewards of Misery's Peak; one when you complete the quest, one if it comes in your class' gearset if you start a veteran character, and one for every time you true reincarnate and do the quest again.'
However it's the freaking Korthos Advice Channel, and while I appreciate efforts to inform new players answering simple questions with simple answers usually goes farther.

For a newbie, though, that's not "repeatedly". You get a bonus reward when you start out as a Vet, and as far as True Reincarnating goes, you're basically starting a new character with all the items and some extra bonus stats. It's not really the same thing as "repeatedly", which implies it's like any other quest.
As far as Marys being a godsend... I thought it was self-obvious, but I was referring specifically to the first one. The second ones wouldn't be Marys. They'd be intelligent :D If anything, the person giving the incorrect information and defending it as if it was fact... THEY'D be the Mary.

Well every time you complete MP you get a choice of end rewards don't you? It's just that the 1st time completing it offers the one-time-only-reward* set after that the end reward set is normal loot junk.

*previously stated methods for duplicate set pieces not withstanding
PS: Every caster should take the Archivist Necklace, pallys and rangers too. >.>

I get a choice of end rewards after completing Misery's Peak the first time.
I do not get a choice of end rewards after completing Misery's Peak again during that life.
If I reincarnate, all of my quest flags are cleared, so I can then get the Misery's Peak end reward once again.
By now, Star might have an entire hotbar full of them.
