View Full Version : Ranged mobs jumping up walls

I'm talking about when a ranged mob, caster or archer or something, jumps backwards and goes right up the wall and then stays up there. It becomes very hard to hit them with melee, if not impossible, and they just stay up there doing their ranged attacks. LOSing them often doesn't help (although you can just skip them usually).

Is this a known bug?

Is there an easy work around?

I've tried jumping + melee, but that is only somewhat effective, and my ranged dps is pretty poor as well.

This annoys me to no end. Witch Doctor Kneeza does it to me at the end of Butcher's Path 9 times out of 10.

I grabbed a Returning Throwing Dagger just for dealing with these situations. If they're too stupid to move you can out-range their spells and dodge their projectiles until you whittle them down. Beyond that I haven't found a good strategy for moving them easily either.

Pretty much what I do as well. If they jump up out of melee range and won't come back down after I finish everybody else in the room off then I just back off and either plink at them with a returning weapon or a bow. Or I just move on if they aren't that important. Sometimes they will come back down, and sometimes not.

Although it was kind of funny to watch one of the frostmarrow skeletons pretty much just walk up a tree in the orchard the other day. The angle was just right that it looked natural.

What also helps is when fighting one of those mobs who jump backwards / tend to run away, is to run past them and them attack them from "behind". This way when they retreat they run in the direction from where you came from, where there is no ledge to jump onto in 99% of the time.

Hi, Welcome!

To my knowledge, this is not a bug.

Range them back or bypass them.

If you run away, sometimes they jump back down to chase you.

Sorta makes that Jump skill look a bit less useless, huh?

What Noctus said is the best way I've found and if that doesn't work then backing off and ranging them til they move works pretty good too. Also you can back off and go around a corner and they'll move to get a better shot at you-then you can get 'em.I agree they do perform some amazing acrobatics to get up there though.

The first two words of your post, have been officially banned by the cube. Just thought I would tell you so that you don't get eaten.

Hard to believe this isn't considered a bug...

I agree it really should be considered a bug. Especially since players can not jump to the same places, no matter how high their jump skill!

I've learned to live with it by herding ranged mobs into corners they can't use to 'back-up'. They will always try to jump away from the position your standing, so if you take some effort you can get them to whatever place you want. It just gets a bit more complicated if you have to deal with more than one ranged mob standing close to each other.
Also in many cases you'll probably want to get at a ranged while there are several melee mobs beating at you , this can make it harder as well.

On my stronger melees I usually try to trip them, but unfortunately that only works well for those who spent some effort to boost their tripping ability (enhancments or even the feat). Stunning is also an option if you have Stunning Fist or Stunning Blow, but it can be tricky to land before the mob jumps out of range again. The tripping somehow seems to land even on mobs in the process of jumping away, so if you're good at tripping, that is probably the best approach. Note that you can find Weapons 'of Vertigo' which increase your chances for trip attempts.

If a mob can glitch itself up inside a wall somewhere where players cannot even get to in order to hit them by using the same means of movement, its a bug. If it was the other way around and players were able to do this but the mob cant, it would be labeled an exploit and fixed. In fact this has actually happened in the past....

I just consider this evening the score-once you play for awhile longer you will find
kobolds ridiculously easy to kill, whether they do this or not. I'd rather have them
jump up on a perch than do their annoying kiting around me as usual.

It's only kobolds that do this, and players COULD do it, except that we are too tall and hit our heads on the ceiling without being able to stand on the micro-ledge that the kobolds use.

Stand so that they jump backwards away from those alcoves where they can get to a wall.

Get a returning throwing weapon to hit them from a distance.

Just go past them.

No need to fix exploits when you can just ban players instead.

GM's and community support specialists are cheaper to hire than programmers.

Nope, I used to think that until I started playing my halfling monk, and she couldn't follow them up either. Also I've seen it done in places without a ceiling and I'm almost sure I've seen Trog Shamans and some orcs or bugbears do it as well, although I currently cannot remember a particular place.
