View Full Version : Not so against a "Hardcore" server now

A few months ago there was a questionare about a "Hardcore server" I'll be honest the ideas asked for such a server did not appeal to me. Of course this was before the additions of casual, changing of many quests to open up shrines and remove the danger of certain traps and fail conditions.

Now without going into details since Im not sure what I can reveal from what I know of said questionare the type of server that Id sign on board for that I would definitely be willing to pay an additional cost for would have to incorporate some of the older aspects of DDO Stormreach. Including quest fails if an objective is messed up, Traps being dangerous again meaning having to bypass them to get to the box or standing admist them again. Locked shrines that require the group to have a person able to open locks or learn how to conserve their energy. Whether they still want to add a limit on magical items or the like I dont know I know how I play and I like earning power items as I quest but they are not that much of a neccessity compared to having a server that does not feel care bear like. I never thought id ever even consider petitioning for such a server and no I do not think it should be restricted to VIP I think many New players are being dealt a disservice by not having Hard/Elite continue to be tough on the regular servers but whats done is done. I just thought id put here in suggestions that I am definitely more opened now to a server that had more hard core rules. I dont think id participate in anything player vs player but I would love an area where the challenge could not be lessened by easier settings, scalings and added ease of changing mechanics that may have you fail if your not smart and plan right. I would easily tack another charge onto my sub for such a server and wonder if I am alone feeling this way?

A few suggestions I would have for such a server are the following:

1. Like Orien and Cannith no transfers from the main servers should be allowed. This would be a brand new area to start over and test your mettle. No worry about inflation until the ones blessed by the Loot gods start flooding the AH.

2. Bring back penalties for death even with a raise now to be honest I was here a hot minute before xp debt was taken away so honestly I dont have that much first hand knowledge of how bad it could get only know that I lost a little dying to oozes and kobolds in ww then it stopped. I wouldnt mind having this brought back.

3. Putting certain quests back to their original challenge difficulties. Including the trap in STK, Von 2 fall fail mechanic, Locked shrines in Tear and removal of valves that open doors that had required certain stats to open I noticed that the other night in the walk the butchers path and I honestly dont know if it was always this way but that one door that the Troglodyte is behind that normally required strength to open now has a lever you can use instead. Its behind barrels yes but I found it after opening the door having the required strength and could not believe this was added.

There are possibly more but I dont want to make this first post too long I know I have a tendency to do such. What I do know is having a server that id dedicated to challenge would be welcomed by me and id like to see if any others feel the same.

Can it also be permadeath by way of removing soul stones? Because with all of what you suggest AND this type of permadeath, that would make it truly hardcore!

It would essentially be the closest thing to a visualized PnP adventure evar!

That could be a nice option as long as it wasnt enforced I have all respect for Perma Death players I believe they are truly hardcore. I do want a challenge but I dont want death to mean the end of my characters I want to use their deaths to know what im doing wrong plan strategy and go back in kicking butt. Thats what excited me about this game 3 years ago having my butt handed to me and going back in with a better plan of action. I miss those days.

If Turbine implemented this it would turn out more like a Turbine Point trap to test your wallet than a place to test your skill.

/I like these ideas of yours Kalari.

Bring back the original DDO, but with xp debt and weapon effects you must confirm IE vorpal.

Perhaps for some I sadly know there is no way to ask for them to leave the store away from this server Im realistic enough. But Id like to think people joining such a server especially to pay extra for such wouldnt want to cheapen the experience by using the store to get threw it. But who knows? I know that id like to see a server with more challenge and penalties when you fail.

And thanks Pete sitting down thinking about it the one reason I fell in love with this game was because I got beat up by the mobs and instead of whining about it being to hard I went back in with a new plan it was a blast and represents how I take on quests till this say. Failure shouldnt be treated like a bad thing all the time, in fact I think it makes for better players if they dont give up and go back in after failing. If I think of more things to add I'll post them here.

I like the concept.

EDIT :
As the OP said, can it be not so different in the game mechanics.
Traps much more tougher as well as the monsters, locked shrines, -X levels of loot ... higher favor for drow (well, that could be a reason to finally buy it at the store :p) may or maynot have 32 pts ...
Even if it is "Experimental Server" (enter at your own risk) ... and, bth, I dont even need GMs (support people assigned) ... if a quest bugs, just recall and do it again (just to minimize the staff/mainten.).
Danger in the city, times of the day with enemies around.
That could be a challenge for the real veteran people, who wants something else of the game.

I always liked the idea of a hardcore server. I still support it.

Personally, I've found that the lack of friendly-fire in DDO is what makes the game less then challenging. Compare that to the old D&D computer greats like Balder's Gate and Icewind Dale, which required actually thinking before blasting; thus increasing the importance of position, tactics, and different spells.

In DDO, a great many of what should be epic battles turn into freakly firewall dances that the brain-dead mobs just can't seem to resist in getting in on. The problem with that is, their the only ones who feel the burn... :(

XP debt made it more, fun, in a way. I think, with more hardcore rules, and a more severe xp debt(with a limit per quest).

Also, maybe a timer on being brought back to life, or a maximum number of times you can be brought back per quest? If you die 5 times, that's it, and you get a huge xp penalty to boot.

I like the sound of hardcore. Just as long as it's not, if you screw up, that's it.
