so i made my first green steel falchion, put t1 acid and then decided to put
flaming burst as my t2 and got the aspect of magma.
at first i thought i had made a good choice but as i play more high lvl runs/raid
im questioning my choice due to all the fire immune mobs.
now should i start over or move onto t3 with it?
can it still be effective enough to use large mats on or should i cut my losses and start over.
i have plenty of small, med mats and some large from runs and 2 pies made in my bag.

Start over. You want to plan your weapon right to the end before you start crafting and figure out what T3 special effect you want.
Mineral II (bypasses most DR, good devil beater) or Lit II (high DPS against most mobs, but doesn't bypass devil DR) are the top choices for most.
You can see the special effects available at T3 here: http://ddowiki.com/page/Altar_of_Devastation_-_Manufactured_Ingredient_Recipes

IMO, when making GS items, you should start by looking at Tier 3, and build to it, rather then what you did.
You can either continue and make a Magma II, or start over.
The reason so many people make Mineral IIs is because it breaks DR with Metalline and Holy. Lightning IIs are also popular because of Holy (breaks DR on some mobs plus it's solid damage), Shocking (Most bosses don't resist it), and Lightning Strike (~600 damage proc).
You don't have to go with the crowd and make one of those, but your item will only be good for some content (Epics), while Mins/Lits are good for that plus Pit Fiends.

Ditto.

You only drop Improved Crit if:
A) you are on a class starved for feats (read, not a fighter or a class with a fighter splash)
B) you aren't going to be using other weapons for DPS on monsters susceptible to crits.
Min II is a great all around weapon, and is probably worth making ahead of anything else for anyone but Paladin 14+.
Lightning II is a popular choice, but there are other good ones as well, depending on what you look to be running most often and what you like.

As a paladin, you can use Holy Sword to bypass nearly all relevant DR, and the DPS of Holy Sword is very close to that of a Mineral II against the droves of acid-resistant and immune monsters we fight at endgame.
Make something with DPS (Lightning II), or a cool effect (Earthgrab/Freezing Ice) and skip the Min II.

Against targets without DR, this will be better than the Holy Sword, so use that for orthons and devils and bezekira and such.

I'd suggest that too.
Lightning 2 does so much damage that it's better than your Holy Sword against Pit Fiends that have a DR of 15 (all of the main raid boss fiends on Normal) and almost exactly equal against DR 20 (the miniboss The Judge in Tower of Despair, all difficulties).

For the purposes of clarity, "orthons and devils" DO have DR, but Holy on any weapon will bypass it.
It's Pit Fiends and Horned Devils who need Good+Silver that are more difficult to get through the DR on. However, the product of the Holy Sword spell will do this.
