Just for fun
Just want to know who plays D&D table top/pen&paper style here?
Well I do.
If you do, post something you like about d&D.
=)

I've never played D&D tabletop before (because it was unheard of from where I grew up) but ever since I saw a video of someone playing it I knew that it would be a game that I would LOVE to play. Still saving up some cash to buy a 'Noob Starter Pack' of D&D Tabletop. I know you can play it without spending $$$ but the atmosphere feels nicer if there are props.

I was thinking more of the freedom to do whatever the hell you wanted when you wanted to. I spent my childhood playing Video RGPs and really wished I could throw the torch at the enemies or swing on the chandelier.
The improv exploration is nice too.

I like the look on a players face when he does something really stupid and i tell him "ok then you are now DEAD and cannot be raised or resurrected". That look of disbelief is priceless. Now i only do this when a player is playing a character as if it has the IQ of a cucumber and expects to get away with anything they try.
Don't get me wrong i like players who will take a chance but there is a difference between taking a chance and sheer stupidity.

well i like games that have freedom in my D&D game but also with some mounts that are available for the players.
It makes the game more... Creative and original.

When I used to DM that freedom gave my friends the ability to ruin each and everyone of my plans :P
I would have huge sessions planed that should take a couple of hours and they would screw me over and force me to improv that rest of the day.

LOL you can't help yourself about the mounts can ya? :D
Personally played DnD since 1st ed although dm'ed since 2nd but mostly 3rd and 3.5.
Best part for me is the feeling when you realise you might not survive an encounter as a player and the look on a player's face when something they never thought might happen happens as a DM.

I no longer play tabletop.
That ended back about 2000. I played and DMed here and there after that, but only one-shots.
Have never tried 4th edition, but hope to at a convention at the end of the month.
I simply don't have the time to travel to game (I live in a pretty rural area), then 4+ hours for the game session.
I also shutter to think what it would cost me to get into a 4e game even as a player as opposed to being a DM. So many books out there.... And I tend to be a completest.
DDO is a wonderful replacement for me, though I do miss seeing many of my old gaming buddies.

I played AD&D. Sadly I never got to play just plain old D&D.
What I like about it is that first they perfected it for hardcore roleplaying geeks like me, then brought out a bland kiddified version which brought in new players and did brilliantly well, allowing the creation of some wonderful video games as spin offs that could remain relatively true to their source (NWN single player and MMO, Planescape, DDO etc). Unfortunately it also brought in a universal rules system that has blandified (is that a word? It should be a word. It could go into the corporate brochure for Starbucks and MacDonalds) the genre ever since, but you can't have everything.
Having reached the pinnacle of perfection for both casual (AD&D 3.5) and hardcore (AD&D 2 or 2.5) roleplayers, the producers of the awesome game that is AD&D decided not to fix what ain't broke, and promptly started working on some totally unrelated game that they call 'fourth edition'. I played it, and clearly this totally unrelated game has got a long way to go before it gets anything like as good as Dungeons and Dragons was, but this 'fourth edition' is certainly a great card game to play with your pet trained monkeys. Er... people who's only gaming experience is Tragic the Saddening. Er, Magic the Gathering. Er. I'll rephrase that. Clearly this 'Fourth Edition' thing is a great game for people who just want to play combat encounter after combat encounter without any of that pesky roleplaying getting in the way.
Where was I. Oh yes. AD&D. I like twenty siders, and use of the word 'd' to easily and simply indicate the number and denomination of dice in a success test. Mostly I just like the "shookashookashookabadadadada-da-brrrrrrr-da" noise when you throw a handful of D6s.

I like the reactions from players.
Me: "Suddenly...the wall begins to shake with a vibrant BOOOOOM. Cracks appear in it..."
Player 1: "I'm running up to the wall, some big monsters coming through, we got this."
Me: "Suddenly, the wall explodes outwards in a spray of little rubble, showering the entire area and leaving small nicks and cuts across exposed skin. A large...and by large I mean somewhere in the vicinity of 100' long BEFORE you count the legs...SPIDER looms over you. A wave of power can be felt by all in the area, the sense to kneel sweeping before it like a storm. Roll saves, please."
Player 1: "I pass, I'm not kneeling to Lolth."
Me: "The spider notices you, of all people, not kneeling before her magnificence. Slowly, ever so slowly, she lowers her thorax until her myriad of eyes stare at you from not 10 feet away. And then...without a single word...she winks."
Player 1: "She what? Winks?!"
Me: "Yes. All 100 eyes."
Player 1: " To he** with this!" Player 1 proceeds to flee the city. :)

I have played D&D since the early 80s. But I switched to Hackmaster Basic (not to be confused with the parody Hackmaster 4th edition that came out) Its got a real old school feel with some nice mechanics. I encourage anyone who gets the chance to check out the Kenzer and Company website. The game is pretty cheap too (less than $20)

I've played D&D basic, expert, Advanced, and 3.x. Great games all.
What I like about D&D is it is a great excuse for a pizza party with friends where you can get together and be creative and have some fun.

Mounts were pretty much the least important thing in D&D in 99% of campaigns.

Trained war hounds are great for small characters. 40 feet of movement, win.

I've played DnD, ADnD, 3.0, and 3.5. Not entirely sold on 4.0 yet, mostly because it's such a massive change from 3.5, which is my favorite for simplifying some of the complexity you'd find in ADnD (saves and THAC0 really screwed me up a lot) but also allowing for enough creativity in how you handle situations that a cunning player can put to use.
I just played my first game of 3.5 in many many moons and I had quite a lot of fun. I might give 4th ed a shot but it'll be a while before I pick up the dice for that one.
