View Full Version : Why does the favored soul get so messed over for spells known?

I really don't get why favored soul gets so messed over for spells? I understand they can't have every spell or that would make them over powered with the amount of spell point they get, but still 4 is ridiculous. As things stand their balance with the cleric is already so messed up with all of the places you can end up resting or potions you can get to restore points. Don't get me wrong the FS is fun but a little more love in the spell department would be nice. Sorcerers get the shaft to in that respect.

What spells are you lacking that you really think you need?
It's possible to take pretty much every spell you want (level 6 is the exception) on a FvS.

Is 4 really not enough? I'm more of a cleric player, and I find myself for many of the spell levels trying to find excuses to take another spell that I never cast. OTOH, I never cast offensively because I can't afford to nuke stuff down, which a FvS can manage a little better. I will cast defensively (Command, Soundburst, etc.) sometimes, but that's only to reduce healing SP needed. So maybe you "need" more spells than me, but I can't honestly consider that being "messed over."

Before radiance fvs where so much more powerful than clerics radiance brought it a lil back in line. FVS can solo pretty much anything they don't need more love they are just fine.

To balance out the extra sp and everything else they get....

And it really isn't much of a balancing (though you're completely right that's the intention) since there simply aren't enough good spells out there again with the notable exception of level 6. I've never felt sad about missing a spell other than the following 3:
Neutralize Poison (and only then because I've got a TR in my guild that hasn't bothered to buy a poison resist item ;) )
Banishment (can't justify carrying it over the other great options there)
Energy Drain (most fights just go too quickly to make this worth it over True Res, Mass Heal, and Implosion)
Other than that I've got every spell I want and feel like I don't have enough room on my hotbars for all of them already :P

Hey you have to give something up for those fa...... er angel wings... :eek:
To be honest I think they should have spell slot or 2 LESS,a nd that goes fro sorcys as well. Considering all the other advantages of the classes..... FvS and Sorcys have a great big chocolate cake in their corner while Clerics and Wizzy's have little tiny cupcakes with a very thin coat of watered down frosting :cool:

considering that the ratio of number known vs number available is much much higher than in PnP i would think 4 is a good thing

Hi, welcome to AD&D. This is done to help balance all of the positives favored souls get. Also the fact there aren't many spells that we NEED memorized the number we have is fine.

well, a dm in the pnp campaign i play told me once:
"the big difference between sorcerers and wizards, is that wizzards know a LOAD of spells, while sorcerers dont, however sorcerer cast the ones they know loads of times, and wizards dont"
the point is that the same relationship goes for cleric/fvs as well. So ok, you have 4 spells from the 1st to the 5th circles of magic, and the rest is 3...well, if ur offensive caster here is the list i have planned gor end game:
level 1 spells:
-bless;
-nightshield;
-divine favor;
-obscuring mist;
level 2:
-hold person;
-resist energy;
-sound burst;
-aid;
level 3:
-prayer;
-remove blindness;
-remove disease;
-magic circle against evil;
level 4:
-divine power;
-freedom of movement;
-neutralize poison;
-shield of faith mass;
level 5:
-break enchantment;
-greater command;
-true seeing;
-stalwart pact;
level 6:
-Heal;
-Banishment (if not this, comet fall, will see how banishment plays out in end game, if not so well swap for comet fall)
-Blade Barrier
Level 7:
-Destruction
-Greater Restoration
-Protection from elements mass
Level 8:
-Mass Death Ward
-Mass Cure Critical
-Holy Aura;
level 9:
-Implosion;
-Mass heal;
-True ressurrection;
if anyone has better suggestions for spells i appreciate it ^^ but so far those seemed to b the best ones for my offensive caster/somewhat buffer/healer on a FvS and the only point i had some doubt as for what spell to take, was at level 6 between cometfall and banishment, aside that, the rest was pretty much a obvious choice. So for me, if anything was to change in the amount of spells, like increase something, would b to make it to lvl 6 with the 4 spell limit to erase my doubt between banishment and cometfall, aside that, rest is perfectly doable.

Well, for starters Bless and Aid do not stack.
Sound burst loses its luster toward mid-end game. (you did say this was an end game spell list)
remove blind/disease - carry wands, they are cheap.
Neutralize poison - same - carry wands
Mass Shield of Faith - Anyone worried about AC is going to have a +4 prot item or better.
Banishment - Not so great at end game.
Prot from elements: Mass - Personally I say let the Cleric/wiz cast this one. I love symbol of stunning too much to take this.

i will b using heighen, so all my spells have the max possible dc, though i dunno if even with that sound burst work that well...if u have any suggestions for spells to exchange those for, plz, tell me, cuz i have no much clue of what else is worth getting
as for banishment, its mostly for shroud stuff, since my guildies told me it helps a lot against outsiders and etc...will test, if doesnt work, i can exchange for comet, no probs. As for symbol of stunning...hmmm....sounds pretty good idea for me

Banishment is awesome running through the Vale but you may want to switch it out at higher levels.
I completely agree regarding the Removes if you can wand whip it don't waste the slot or the sp.

The biggest problem (IMO) with your spell list is your lack of heals. I hope you don't plan on being counted on as a primary raid healer (at any level of raid) with only 3 healing spells as you will often find yourself smashing buttons waiting on spell refresh timers or standing next to the stones of the people you didn't have time to heal. IMO, you should take at least 1 more single target heal (stupid people never stay grouped close enough for mass cures in groups and rarely do in raids outside of boss fights) and 1 more mass cure (spell lvl 6 or lower). Your two mass heal spells are over spell level 6 and will not have the benefit of any item based enhancement unless you are fortunate enough after farming ToD to put devotion8 on a ring (item based enhancement doesn't really matter for mass heal itself).
